I moved from Colombia to the Netherlands years ago. My first birthday there was a big surprise.
My friends gave me beautifully wrapped (包装) presents. But when I opened them, I was surprised: almost everything was second-hand—books, clothes, and even shoes. I knew second-hand shopping was popular here, but I didn’t know people gave second-hand presents too. At first, I felt a little sad. I thought, “Don’t they care about me Why didn’t they buy me something new ”
In the country where I grew up, people did not give second-hand presents. It was not common (常见) . I would feel sorry to give a used gift. It might seem not polite.
But later, I learned that giving second-hand gifts is very normal in my new home. I started to understand that what matters most is the thought behind the gift. My friends spent time thinking about what I might like. They searched hard to find the perfect gift for me. Buying something new online is easy. Finding a good second-hand gift takes more time and effort.
Now, I have come to enjoy this way of giving and receiving gifts. And I’m teaching my daughter to do the same. Yang Changqin turned a childhood dream into a career. The 36-year-old is highly skilled in Chishui bamboo weaving (编织).
Born in Guizhou province, she loved making things by hand as a child. After trying different jobs, she gave up her job as a teacher, and started learning traditional bamboo weaving at about 18.
Yang remembered how hard it was at the beginning. She used the knife to cut but often hurt her hands. But she kept working and improving her skills. Later, Yang began exploring new waves of bamboo weaving. She created 3D techniques (工艺) and studied at art schools to bring modern design ideas into her work.
In 2012, she started her own company. Its bamboo paintings, handbags and lamps soon became popular. But starting a business (生意) also meant learning new skills. She also learned to manage production and think about how to reach customers outside her hometown. Her business makes a clear difference in the local community. One shop can make tens of thousands of yuan a month. At the same time, it pays local villagers several thousand yuan for piecework.
As more young people take an interest in traditions and run business themselves, Yang encourages them to use their power to bring traditional culture into modern life. Her love for her job, she added, is what carried her through each challenge.

What do young people look for in a job A survey in the United States asked over 10,000 people born between 1996 and 2012 about their career hopes.
The results show that these young people care most about “fair (公平的) treatment of workers” and “having time for life outside of work”. They want jobs that can make them enjoy their hobbies and spend time with family and friends. They also want to work for companies that try to do good things for society (社会).
Another interesting finding is that many young people want jobs that help others. Nearly half of them said they are interested in health care. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was named the most popular place to work—even more popular than big names like Amazon. Why Because St. Jude helps sick children for free, and that is what young people care about.
Not everyone has decided yet. Kayden Estrada, an 11-year-old from Pennsylvania, shared his thoughts: “I want to do what I love, and I want to make money.” For him, doing something enjoyable is just as important as making money.

Kids often feel pressure from homework, parents and teachers. But a big pressure is trying to keep up with friends, known as “peer pressure”.
Teenagers sometimes blame (归咎于) peer pressure for their actions. Some even use it as an excuse (借口) to do things they shouldn’t. When friends push you to make bad choices like smoking or drinking, trouble and bad habits may follow. Some teens do these things to avoid feeling left out, but this can be detrimental. You may forget who you really are. To fit in, you might stop being yourself. But remember, good friends like you for who you are. Hold on to what you believe in, and you’ll feel better about yourself, too.
△ When friends encourage you to do good things, like trying your best in school or staying out of trouble, it helps you make good choices.
The key is knowing when to go along with others and when to stand your ground. Be brave enough to say no when you need to. If friends try to make you do something you don’t want to, suggest something else or just walk away. Also, be confident in what you believe and hang out with friends who feel the same way. Talk to someone you trust if you’re feeling pressured.
45.What does the underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Relaxing. B.Risky. C.Necessary. D.Private.
46.Which of the following sentences can be put into △
A.However, peer pressure isn’t always bad. B.As a result, teenagers may behave worse.
C.Don’t always keep your feelings inside. D.We need to deal with the pressure wisely.
47.What advice is given to teenagers facing peer pressure
A.Be brave to make more friends. B.Keep their feelings to themselves.
C.Stand up for what they think is right. D.Follow the crowd to avoid trouble.
五、任务型阅读
Last week, our school held a Science and Technology Festival. Each class needed to make something special. Our class decided to build a model car that could run by itself.
At first, everyone had different ideas. Some wanted to make it look cool. Others wanted it to run fast. We couldn’t agree with each other. The teacher said, “If you don’t work as a team, you will get nothing done.”
So we sat down and talked. We made a plan. Li Wei, who is good at drawing, would design the car. Zhang Jie, who loves machines, would build it. The rest of us would help find materials and test the car.
But problems came. The car wouldn’t move on the first try. Zhang Jie felt sad. “Maybe I’m not good enough,” he said. “No, we are a team,” Li Wei told him. “If something goes wrong, we fix it together.” So for the next days, we worked together, looked for answers online and asked teachers for help. Slowly, the car got better. On the day of the festival, our car ran 20 meters—farther than any other class’s car!
When we got the first prize, we all cheered. I’ve also learned an important lesson from the experience.
