Like many kids last summer. I learned to ride a bike. Only I am in my 30s. When I was a child, I had no one to teach me. Both of my parents made a living in a big city.
When my brother and I were made fun of because we were the only kids over six who still depended on training wheels, my grandfather took them away. But I lost interest in riding. I was so scared—I was quite tall for my age at 7 and I was worried I’d fall off. I thought I was too old to learn.
Not knowing how to ride didn’t bring me any trouble at first, until we moved to the suburbs, where bicycles were popular. On trips to the convenience store to buy candy with my friends, I was always the last to arrive, on foot. By then, I was 12 years old.
In my early 30s, I remembered feeling envious as I watched children as young as 3 learn to ride bikes. They balanced easily on their bikes, riding around the park with big smiles while I could only sit on a bench and watch. Then something changed. The fear within was still there, but something much stronger was taking over. I decided to join a women’s bike-riding organization. There, I stood in a park, decided to overcome my fear. Meeting women from different backgrounds, all searching for cycling skills with different reasons, made my determination (决心) stronger. Before long, I was riding confidently.
With the joy of riding, I bought my own bike, not just for getting around but to get back lost time. It wasn’t simply a bike; it meant a chance I missed earlier. I completely lost myself in the experience, enjoying the beautiful scenery.

Gulliver’s Travels is a well-known adventure novel written by the famous writer Jonathan Swift. It follows the amazing experiences of Lemuel Gulliver, a kind and curious ship’s doctor who has a great passion for sailing and exploring the world. The book mainly tells his four unbelievable journeys to magical and imaginary countries, full of surprises and fun.
On his first voyage, a terrible storm destroys his ship. Gulliver swims to safety and wakes up in Lilliput, a land of tiny people who are just six inches tall. He is caught and tied tightly with thousands of small ropes. Later, he uses his big size to help the Lilliputians win a war against their enemy island, becoming their hero at first.
Next, he is left on a strange island during his second trip and arrives in Brobdingnag, the land of giants. The giants are as tall as mountains! Gulliver becomes a little “living toy” for them. He meets many dangers: he is almost eaten by a huge cat and has to fight terrible small animals.
In his third journey, he visits several weird islands. One island is run by silly scientists who only care about useless experiments and can’t take care of their daily lives.
Finally, he reaches the land of the Houyhnhnms. These are wise, gentle horses who live in peace. They rule the ugly, rude human-like creatures called Yahoos. Gulliver loves the horses’ honest life and feels sorry for human beings’ bad behaviors.
Through these exciting stories, Swift not only brings us fun and laughter, but also lets us think about people’s good and bad sides, society and politics. It is a great classic adventure book and a smart satire, still popular and meaningful for readers today.
