Despite the growing popularity of bio-based plastics, plastic pollution remains one of the world’s most pressing environmental issues. According to the OECD’s Global Plastics Outlook (2022), about 353 million metric tons of plastic waste were produced globally in 2019, with nearly 1.7 million metric tons flowing directly into aquatic (水生的) ecosystems. Much of this waste becomes trapped in large ocean currents, known as gyres (环流), forming the infamous “garbage masses” found in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans.
To solve this problem, researchers have been searching for plastics that can be degraded (降解) more reliably in deep-sea environments. One promising candidate is LAHB, a new eco-friendly plastic. So far, LAHB has shown strong potential as a biodegradable polymer that breaks down in river water and shallow seawater.
In a study made available online, researchers from Japan have shown for the first time that LAHB can also get biodegraded under deep-sea conditions, where low temperatures, high pressure and extremely limited nutrients make breakdown of plastic extremely difficult. The study demonstrates for the first time that LAHB undergoes active biodegradation and complete mineralization even on the deep-sea floor, where conventional PLA remains completely non-degradable.
The research team submerged (使淹没水中) two types of LAHB films — P6LAHB and P13LAHB (containing different levels of lactic acid) — alongside a conventional PLA film for comparison. After 7 and 13 months, the LAHB films revealed clear signs of biodegradation under deep-sea conditions. The P13LAHB film lost 30.9% of its weight after 7 months and over 82% after 13 months. The P6LAHB film showed similar trends. By contrast, the measurable weight loss of PLA film is 0%. There was no visible degradation during the same period, highlighting its resistance to microbial degradation.
This research fills a knowledge gap about how bio-based plastic degrade in remote marine (海洋的) areas. “By showing that LAHB can decompose and mineralize even in deep-sea conditions, the study provides a pathway for safer alternatives to conventional plastics and supports the transition to a circular bioeconomy,” says Prof. Taguchi.

B.PLA degrades easily in the deep-sea water.
C.LAHB is hard to break down in the ocean.
D.PLA should be more widely used.
6. What is Prof. Taguchi’s attitude towards the result of the research
A.Optimistic.
B.Indifferent.
C.Objective.
D.Worried.
7. Which of the following is the best title of the passage

For decades, beluga whales (白鲸), known for their white skin and gentle nature, have been beloved symbols of Canada’s marine life. Unfortunately, a heartbreaking crisis in Ontario has exposed the broken bond between humans and animals: 30 captive (被囚禁的) belugas at Marineland, once famous but now unknown, because of lacking money, have been abandoned and are struggling to survive.
Marineland, located by Niagara Falls, shut down in 2024 due to rising debts. Without income for whale care, the park could no longer provide proper care for its 30 belugas. Most were born in captivity, consequently, they lack essential survival skills, making their release into the wild a death sentence.
In 2025, in a desperate attempt to save the belugas, the park begged the Canadian government to allow their transfer to a foreign marine facility — a last hope for their safety. Unexpectedly, however, federal officials turned down the request flatly. They cited laws that ban the use of whales for entertainment, arguing that relocating the whales would only keep them confined (受限) in tanks, which went against the spirit of the law.
This refusal put the park in a cruel dilemma: without support or relocation approval, it might have to end the life of the whales. Once kept for human amusement, these belugas now face being forgotten. This is a tragic “selective abandonment”. Because well-known species are drawing public concern.
Above all, their suffering reveals a painful truth: humans often use animals for pleasure and profit, only to cast them aside when they are no longer useful. In fact, protecting animals means keeping our promise to care for those we have taken in, especially when they are at their most vulnerable. These belugas did not choose to be confined to tanks: they were brought into captivity by humans. Thus, we need to give them a chance to live a decent life, not a lonely and unnecessary death.
8. Why do the belugas at Marineland have difficulties in surviving in the wild
A.Being weak physically.
B.Moving to a new environment.
C.Lacking survival skills.
D.Fearing human beings.
9. What is the primary concern for the Canadian government to refuse the relocation
A.Unsafe foreign facilities.
B.Related laws.
C.High cost.
D.Possible death.
10. What does the underlined phrase “selective abandonment” most probably mean
A.Abandoning animals without official permission.
B.Giving up animals for economic reasons.
C.Deserting animals in a careful way.
D.Ignoring some animals while caring for others.
11. Which of the following do you think the author might agree with according to the passage
A.Government plays an important role in protecting animals.
B.Using animals for performance should be stopped.
C.Stricter laws should be applied to protect animals.
D.We should be responsible for the animals we use.

Safety Tips on High-rise Building Fire
Fire safety in high-rise buildings is very important because fires there can be very dangerous, especially when the maximum height that a fire truck ladder can reach is only 33 meters. With many people in the building, it’s hard for everyone to get out at once. Fires can also spread fast through stairs and air conditioning systems. 12
Head to the nearest exit or refuge floor (避难层)
If you’re at home, an exit could be a door, window, or even a fire escape ladder. If you are in a public building, follow the EXIT sign, a picture of a person running through a door, or both. Refuge floor is a good place to stay if it is impossible to get out of the building quickly.
13
Smoke inhalation (吸入) is the leading cause of death in fires. If you have to pass through smoke, make sure you crawl (匍匐前进) your way on all fours and cover your mouth and nose with your shirt to help filter (过滤) out the smoke as you breathe.
Check the door for any signs of fire on the other side
If the door on your way out is closed, don’t open it immediately. First, feel the door and doorknob (门把手) with the back of your hand. 14 Then, check around the door for signs of smoke or heat. If you notice red-hot ashes or black smoke coming from the other side of the door, do not open it. Try to find another exit.
Do not use the elevator
15 You could get trapped if you decide to use it as you escape. Instead, use the stairs if you’re on the higher floor of the building. You could also wait for the firefighters to help.
Keep your head
If you got trapped in the building, make sure you are in a safe place, call the fire department and report your exact location. You can also try to use what you have to send signals to the outside.
16 Don’t break the window and jump. You are likely to have better chances of survival waiting calmly inside for help.
A.Avoid breathing in smoke
B.Check the alarms each month
C.For example, hang a light-colored cloth out of your window.
D.Here are some tips for you to keep yourself safe.
E.Elevators might become unreliable when a fire breaks out in the building.
F.Speak clearly as you describe where the fire is happening.
G.If it feels warm or hot, don’t open it.

A library is a place where a large collection of books are lined. However, quite different from traditional ones, a new library which opened last year in San Antonio, Texas, US is very special in the thing — there is not a single book in it.
In fact, the world’s first “bookless” library, known as BiblioTech, looks more like an internet cafe. Instead of bookshelves, it has iPads, laptops and desktop computers to use on site and 500 e-readers for members to borrow. Most importantly, there is no printed material, reported Time.
“Our digital library is stored in the cloud, so you don’t have to come in to get a book.” Laura Cole, BiblioTech’s special projects coordinator, told CNN. The library at the moment has a collection of 10,000 e-books and is trying to add more.
The idea of a bookless library no longer seems new since e-books have been around for quite some time. At the end of 2020, 60 percent of Americans aged 16 and older read e-books, up from 46 percent the year before. At the same time, the proportion (比例) of Americans who read a printed book fell from 57 percent to 42 percent.
“Not all libraries are going to be like us,” Nelson Wolt, a local official told CNN. “But we surely do hope it’s going to drive them to do so. The world is changing, and libraries can’t stay the same if they want to stay connected with the changing world.”
Also, located in a low-income (低收入的) neighborhood where 40 percent of families don’t have a computer and half are not available to broadband Internet service, the library provides digital convenience to people who lack it.
All in all, the newly-born library, though young, may be promising in the future soon to come.
