When Mia Woods retired at 61, she knew she needed a plan. “I was worried about losing my identity as a professional. What else can I be ” she thought.
The year before, she had been told she had a mild memory problem. “I was trying to show myself that I could still think and be creative,” she says. So she decided to do — rather than be — something new: bake a pie every day for a year and give each pie away. “It made me reach out every day to somebody, so I wouldn’t be alone. And it gave me a routine,” she says.
She baked her first pie and gave it to her 88-year-old aunt, Carol. As a teenager, Mia had moved in with her aunt’s family when her mother became ill. “They gave me stability... It was the perfect first pie,” she says. She went on giving pies to former colleagues, grocery clerks, even a homeless man. As word spread, she got known as “the pie lady”.
For more than 30 years, Mia had worked as a city planner. “I’m a planner by nature, training and profession. What I really liked about it was that planning takes time, chaos, many different components, puts them all together and makes them into something manageable.” She sees the same in baking pies: “You take a bunch of ingredients and create something out of them.”
Twelve years on, Mia has continued to invent new projects, including writing a letter a day, and painting pictures of her local sky. She is writing a book about the pie experience. But she has learned more than baking. “What really came out of it was the understanding that I was someone who could do new things,” she reflects. “And my professional identity wasn’t critical to who I am.”
“Even now, after I have an encounter with somebody, I think: ‘There’s a person I wish I could give a pie to.’” says Mia.
4. What was Mia’s worry when she retired
A.Her serious mental problem.
B.Her being cut off from others.
C.Having no identity beyond career.
D.Having to change her daily routine.
5. Why did Mia give her first pie to her aunt
A.She had given Mia a home.
B.She had cared for Mia’s mum.
C.She was the oldest in the family.
D.She had built Mia’s stable character.
6. What do city planning and baking pies have in common according to Mia
A.Both require professional training.
B.Both make sense of mixed elements.
C.Both create something out of nothing.
D.Both connect people with one another.
7. What is Mia’s reflection on her experience
A.Everyone in the world deserves a pie.
B.New challenges redefine who we are.
C.Opening up to changes takes courage.
D.Simple acts can bring people together.

Like a literal breath of fresh air, so-called “micro-forests” represent a green practice, boosting the quality of life in many of the world’s polluted and overcrowded urban centers.
These small areas of densely (稠密地) planted woodland trees, also known as mini-forests or pocket forests, allow communities to manage the effects of climate change in a small way, but offer enormous benefits to the environment and local people, as they restore soil, air and water quality. These mini-forests are proving a magnet for various animal and plant species, which offer human beings the chance to learn more about nature. Magically becoming self-sustaining over time, they are a way to make reimagined urban life a reality.
Significantly, mini-forests, as one of their nonprofit facilitators SUGi outlines, serve to build social bonds in communities as well, as they come together to enjoy and sustain new natural settings. They can also regenerate and beautify neglected (被忽视的) plots in cities such as former basketball courts, and disused parking lots and playgrounds, for instance.
According to the UN’s State of the World’s Forests Report from 2020, over 440 million hectares (公顷) of forest have been lost to other uses since 1990. Now, more than half of the global population lives in urban areas, but the access to green spaces is limited. The good news is that micro-forests in cities can offer an important chance to fight against deforestation and enlarge green spaces.
Euro News details some of the many exciting micro-forests that have taken root globally. Nonprofit Earthwatch Europe, for instance, has planted 285 of them since 2022. Their plots are made up of 600 trees. A tree-planting program aiming to restore biodiversity and reintroduce native species, SUGi, has created 230 pocket forests in 52 cities around the world, from Toulouse in France, to Madrid in Spain, and Saint George in Romania.
8. What does the underlined word “magnet” in paragraph 2 most probably mean
A.Something artificial.
B.Something simplified.
C.Something innovative.
D.Something appealing.
9. How do micro-forests benefit a city according to the text
A.They reduce traffic jams.
B.They improve urban land use.
C.They popularize sports activities.
D.They ensure citizens’ privacy.
10. What is the data in paragraph 4 intended to stress
A.The fast pace of urbanization.
B.The need to control populations.
C.The importance of micro-forests.
D.The harm caused by deforestation.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.Plans to further promote micro-forests.
B.Benefits of sustaining micro-forests.
C.Examples of creating micro-forests in cities.
D.Policies about micro-forest preservation.

The world’s appetite for seafood is growing, and the industry is racing to keep up. As a result, mariculture — farming seafood in the ocean — is expanding rapidly. A new study, published in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution, suggests that mariculture could be expanded to feed more people while reducing harm to marine biodiversity.
The study was led by Deqiang Ma, a scholar at the University of Michigan. “We can achieve this sustainable mariculture development with strategic planning,” said Ma.
Ma and an international team of researchers developed a model to analyze what mariculture growth could bring to over 20,000 marine species. The team’s model created a baseline for mariculture’s current impact and simulated how it could change by 2050 under different scenarios. The researchers also factored in two climate change models, which assumed varying levels of warming and greenhouse gas emissions.
In the best-case situation, seafood production could increase by 2.36-fold compared to current production, while the global mariculture impact would decrease by up to 30.5%. However, the worst-case scenario painted a completely different picture. If new farms were built in the most ecologically sensitive areas, the damage to marine biodiversity could be more than four times worse than the damage that would happen if farms were placed randomly.
“Our study shows it’s essential to use the growing insights across disciplines, whether it’s climate change science or economics or marine production,” said senior study author Neil Carter, an associate professor at the University of Michigan. “All these different parts have to come together from other sources to make these forecasts.”
One key takeaway is that there’s no universal solution. What works in the South Pacific may not be ideal for coastal Europe. Additionally, in all scenarios examined, mariculture expansion could negatively impact some marine mammals like whales, seals, and sea lions. Understanding these trade-offs is essential for policymakers who must balance food security with conservation goals.
12. What is the purpose of the new study
A.To develop technologies for modern mariculture.
B.To reduce seafood prices by developing mariculture.
C.To balance seafood demand with marine conservation.
D.To promote mariculture as an alternative to marine fishing.
13. What mainly determines mariculture’s impact according to the study
A.The location of the farming.
B.The speed of climate change.
C.The type of seafood being farmed.
D.The size of the global seafood market.
14. What does Carter emphasize in paragraph 5
A.Reducing seafood demand worldwide.
B.Using knowledge from multiple fields.
C.Expanding mariculture into all oceans.
D.Prioritizing the protection of marine animals.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.Climate change plays a vital role in mariculture.
B.Seafood farming can sometimes benefit biodiversity.
C.Mariculture’s impacts can be eliminated with technology.
D.There isn’t a single global way to expand seafood farming.

A Rainy Day Rescue
The afternoon sky turned dark suddenly, and heavy rain poured down without warning. Xiao Ming, a senior three student, was riding his bike home. He pedaled hard, trying to reach home before the rain got worse, but the road soon became slippery. The raindrops hit his face like small needles, and his vision got a little unclear, so he had to slow down and focus on the road ahead.
As he passed the old alley near the school, he heard a faint whimper (受惊动物的呜咽) Curious, he stopped his bike and walked carefully into the alley. There, under a broken shelter, he saw a small, wet dog trembling. Its fur was soaked, sticking to its thin body, and it looked scared, shrinking into a ball to keep warm. Xiao Ming’s heart softened-he’d always loved animals but his parents were too busy to let him keep one.
He took off his school uniform jacket and gently wrapped it around the dog. The dog stopped whimpering and pushed his hand with its cold nose, as if seeking comfort. Xiao Ming looked at the pouring rain and then at the little dog. The shelter above them was leaking, and the rain was starting to wet his shirt. He knew he couldn’t leave the little dog there alone. But how could he take it home without his parents’ permission They’d always said taking care of a pet would distract him from his preparations for the College Entrance Examination.
Just as he was thinking, his phone rang. It was his mom, asking when he’d be home. Xiao Ming hesitated for a moment, then told her the truth about the dog-how small it was, how scared it looked, and how he couldn’t bear to leave it in the rain. There was a pause on the other end of the phone, and Xiao Ming held his breath, waiting for her reply, his fingers gently stroking the dog’s wet fur to calm both the pet and himself.
To Xiao Ming’s surprise, his mom asked him to bring the dog home. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
In the following weeks, Rain became a part of Xiao Ming’s busy senior three life. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

To Xiao Ming’s surprise, his mom asked him to bring the dog home. Full of joy, Xiao Ming hurried home with the little dog held tightly in his arms. His mother prepared warm milk and a soft blanket for the poor puppy at once. They gave it the name Rain because they met on such a rainy day. Mom told Xiao Ming that as long as he could keep his study efficient, they would keep Rain. Xiao Ming nodded firmly, determined not to let the pet affect his exam preparation.
In the following weeks, Rain became a part of Xiao Ming’s busy senior three life. After long hours of review, Rain would jump to his feet to cheer him up, sweeping away his tiredness. Xiao Ming arranged fixed time to feed and walk Rain every day, which helped him form a regular schedule. Instead of distracting him, the lovely dog brought him warmth and motivation. With Rain’s company, Xiao Ming faced the pressure of the college entrance exam with more courage.
