Jennifer Blalack, 66, has shouldered heavy caringiving duties for years. She helped her husband recover from lymphoma, looked after her sick mother until she passed away, and then took in her 96-year-old father. He faced many health problems and had great difficulty moving around, so he needed professional and round-the-clock care most of the time.
Jennifer prepared a cozy room with easy access to the garden, managed all his medical appointments and medications, and carried his wheelchair in and out of the car. Every night, she played word games with him to keep his mind sharp. However, she soon became overwhelmed and fell into a terrible low mood. Unable to find an effective way out, she called the community service hotline 211 for professional help.
She then learned about Sourcewise, a non-profit organization in Santa Clara County. For over 50 years, it has been offering free support to the elderly and exhausted family caregivers. The group offered Jennifer a valuable gift: 40 hours of free respite care, which meant she could hire someone to look after her father for a full week. With this welcome help, she and her husband enjoyed a peaceful holiday in the mountains, recharging their energy and relieving their pressure.
Across the US, more than 43 million people serve as unpaid family caregivers, half of whom are looking after their parents. Many suffer from physical exhaustion and emotional distress due to long-term stress. Sourcewise not only provides short-term rest but also offers useful guidance, online courses and support groups. It teaches caregivers essential caring skills and helps the elderly live happier and safer lives.
Caregiving can bring family members closer, but the hidden pressure is often overlooked by the public. Organizations like Sourcewise act as a lifeline for those in need. They remind the public that family caregivers also deserve warmth and care, and that a short but meaningful break can make a great difference to their physical and mental health.
24. Why did Jennifer turn to Sourcewise for help
A. She lost interest in daily hobbies. B. Her father refused to receive medical care.
C. She failed to bear the heavy pressure. D. Her husband failed to support the whole family.
25. What does the underlined word “respite” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Temporarily relief. B. Constant attendance.
C. Professional aid. D. Financial support.
26. What can we infer about Sourcewise from the text
A. It offers long-term full-time nursing service.
B. It eases caregivers’ physical and mental pressure.
C. It provides free medical operations for the elderly.
D. It is supported and managed by the local government.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To share a warm family story. B. To show the challenges of nursing work.
C. To introduce a helpful social organization. D. To call on people to offer money to the old.

Listening to music behind the wheel is as common as wearing a seatbelt. Over 80% of drivers play music on most trips, especially young drivers who say they struggle to focus without it. Music can lift our mood, keep us awake on long, dull drives, and make trips more enjoyable, but its influence on driving safety is far more complex than we might think.
We tend to think music relaxes us, energises us, or helps us focus when we’re behind the wheel. But science paints a more complicated picture. Decades of studies show music can sharpen some aspects of driving performance while dulling others. And it affects young drivers differently from more experienced ones.
Researchers have studied music’s effects on driving for years using simulators, carefully measuring speed, reaction time, following distances and crash risks under different music conditions. Their findings show music can both help and harm driving performance. Overall, drivers listening to music face more simulated crashes, poorer speed control, and less stable following distances compared to silent driving. However, soft, familiar music can temporarily help tired drivers stay alert, though this beneficial effect fades quickly after 15 to 25 minutes.
Volume and music type matter a lot. Loud or fast-paced music may slightly increase speed, while quiet, slow music encourages slower driving. Highly energetic or aggressive songs can lead to riskier behavior, especially for young or new drivers. Music chosen by drivers themselves is less distracting than unfamiliar music, as it helps them stay calm and focused on the road.
Inexperienced drivers are more easily affected by music. Studies show upbeat or fast music makes them more likely to speed, miss important road signs, and react slowly to sudden dangers. In contrast, calm and slow music can help new drivers stay more aware of potential road risks.
For safer driving, experts suggest listening to familiar songs at a moderate volume and avoiding loud or aggressive music. New drivers should especially lower the volume or even turn off music in difficult driving conditions such as heavy traffic or bad weather.
28. What is the effect of soft familiar music on tired drivers
A. It helps them stay awake for a short time.
B. It makes them control speed more perfectly.
C. It reduces their mental workload significantly.
D. It improves their long-term concentration steadily.
29. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about
A. When suitable music for driving is picked.
B. Why new drivers love energetic music.
C. What makes unfamiliar music distracting.
D. How music type and volume influence driving.
30. What conclusion about inexperienced drivers can we draw from the text
A. They react faster to dangers with fast music.
B. They prefer loud aggressive music by nature.
C. They are less likely to speed with fast music.
D. They are more affected by music than experienced ones.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards listening to music while driving
A. Approving. B. Critical. C. Objective. D. Cautious.
D
The global surge in solar power is extraordinary. Over the past 15 years, the cost of installing a solar system has dropped by 90 percent, and the technology now accounts for over 80 per cent of the world’s new electricity capacity each year. When oil and gas prices soared due to the Middle East conflict, solar became an obvious choice for many countries to ease energy pressure.
In the UK, the government will legalise a currently illegal form of solar: so-called plug-in kits, which will soon be available in high-street shops and supermarkets. These DIY kits allow users to simply bring the panels (太阳能板) home, place them in a sunny spot and plug them in. With no installation cost, people can immediately use solar energy to power their homes. If they move, they can take the panels with them, making solar even cheaper and more accessible.
Despite falling costs, traditional solar systems are still expensive. An average 4-kilowatt system for a UK home costs around 7,000, while a US system covering double the energy use costs about $20,000, including professional installation and grid connection. Plug-in solar is far simpler and cheaper: an 800-watt system costs around 400, covering roughly 20 percent of a UK home’s energy needs. Installation is as easy as tying panels to a balcony or garden fence and plugging them into a wall socket. However, excess energy from plug-in systems flows back to the grid without bringing profits, unlike traditional systems that allow users to sell surplus power.
Plug-in solar is already popular outside the UK. Germany has over a million registered plug-in systems, with a total capacity of 1.6-2.4 gigawatts. Though it remains a small part of the overall energy mix, it can reduce household bills and boost a country’s renewable energy generation capacity. Experts say that if governments keep legalising plug-in solar, its popularity will grow rapidly. “While individual systems are small, their combined impact is meaningful for distributed generation and public engagement in the energy transition,” says Jan Rosenow of the University of Oxford. In the US, Utah has legalised plug-in solar, and many other states are considering similar rules.
32. What is the function of Paragraph 1
A. To introduce the background of the topic.
B. To present a popular theory about energy crisis.
C. To explain the importance of traditional energy.
D. To show the rising trend of solar power.
33. How does the author develop Paragraph 3
A. By giving examples and telling stories.
B. By introducing causes and showing effects.
C. By answering questions and raising doubts.
D. By listing figures and making a comparison.
34. What can we learn from the example of Germany
A. Germany is the first country to legalise plug-in solar kits.
B. Plug-in solar has become the main energy source in Germany.
C. Plug-in solar technology has proven practical and popular there.
D. Germany’s plug-in systems can meet half of the country’s energy needs.
35. What is the main idea of the text
A. The high cost of traditional solar systems in the UK and US.
B. The global impact of the Middle East conflict on energy prices.
C. The rise of plug-in solar kits as a new accessible energy solution.
D. Germany’s leading role in promoting renewable energy technology.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The first cold snap of winter hit Willow Creek violently. Heavy snow had been falling for two days, and the sidewalk outside Mrs. Grant’s house was covered with thick, hard ice. The elderly lady, living alone, had been looking forward to her daily visit to the community library. But the slippery path made her anxious, as she was afraid of falling.
Mrs. Grant was a bit reserved and suspicious by nature. She had lived alone for years and preferred to keep to herself. The Carter family, who moved in next door last month, were always noisy with their two energetic boys. To Mrs. Grant’s ordered mind, their yard was always a mess with scattered toys. She secretly thought the family was uncivilized and didn’t care about community rules.
Just as she was feeling lonely and worried about going out, a soft knock sounded at the door. She opened it with caution and saw 12-year-old Tommy, the boy next door, standing outside with a broom (扫帚) in his hand. “Aunt Maria, I saw the snow!” shouted Tommy. “I cleared a path for you, but it’s still icy. Can I help you walk to the library ”
Astonished by the unexpected visit, Mrs. Grant frowned and hesitated. She didn’t want to trouble the boy, but her fear of falling won out. She nodded weakly. Tommy put on a pair of old gloves and held her arm tightly as they walked slowly to the library. On the way, Tommy chatted happily about his school life, distracting Mrs. Grant from the cold. She felt a strange warmth, though she still kept a certain distance.
After the visit, Tommy accompanied her back home. Before leaving, he even helped clear a small area of ice from her steps. To thank him, Mrs. Grant prepared a plate of freshly baked cookies. Tommy accepted them with a big smile and then ran back to clear more snow from the street corner.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The next morning, Mrs. Grant looked out of the window and was deeply moved by what she saw.

【答案】范文
The next morning, Mrs. Grant looked out of the window and was deeply moved by what she saw. The sidewalk in front of her house and the path to the community gate were fully cleared of snow and ice. A small cardboard sign read “Careful with steps!” In the distance, Tommy was clearing snow for elderly Mr. Henderson, his red scarf floating in the wind. Mrs. Grant thought of her secret criticism of the Carters’ “messy yard” — but now, those scattered toys felt like signs of a warm, lively family. Tears welled up as she realized his kindness was no one-time favor, but the reflection of their true nature.
This incident deeply touched Mrs. Grant and changed her view on neighborhood relationships. That afternoon, she baked chocolate chip cookies — Tommy’s favorite, as he’d mentioned casually — and knocked on the Carters’ door. Tommy opened it in surprise. Mrs. Grant smiled, handing him the cookies: “Thank you for clearing the snow, dear. You’ve helped me so much.” Mrs. Carter joined them, and they chatted warmly. Gradually, Mrs. Grant joined community activities, and the Carters helped her with heavy chores. She learned true neighborliness isn’t about perfect yards, but mutual care that melts winter’s cold. From then on, her home was no longer lonely, but filled with the boys’ laughter and neighborhood warmth.高三英语参考答案
