【答案】Possible Version 1
Dear Chris,
Glad to hear you’re participating in the World Earth Day poster contest! Between the two versions, I highly recommend the first one, “There is no Planet B.”
I prefer this design for two main reasons. Visually, the poster features a crying and sweating Earth, with factory chimneys emitting toxic smoke on its top. It vividly highlights the severe environmental crises we are facing, such as global warming and air pollution. More importantly, the slogan itself is brilliant. By cleverly playing on the phrase “Plan B”, it sends a powerful warning to the public: our planet is irreplaceable, and we have no backup home to escape to. Therefore, we must stop the destruction before it’s too late.
I believe this thought-provoking poster will surely leave a lasting impression on the judges. Best of luck!
Yours,
Li Hua
Possible Version 2
Dear Chris,
Glad to hear you’re participating in the World Earth Day poster contest! Both versions are fantastic, but I favor the second one, “OUR ACTIONS, OUR FUTURE.”
What makes this poster stand out is the perfect combination of its image and slogan. In terms of the image, it presents a hopeful scene where a pair of hands gently holds the Earth. On top of the globe, leafy trees and a bright sun vividly symbolize a green, sustainable future. Moreover, the slogan perfectly matches the drawing. Written entirely in bold capitals, the words create a strong impact, conveying a highly positive message that the destiny of our planet literally lies in our own hands.
I’m sure this inspiring design will shine in the contest and motivate more people to take concrete eco-friendly actions. Good luck!
Yours,
Li Hua
【答案】
One day, Emily handed me an application form. Staring at the competition entry blank, my heart raced with panic, for I had never imagined stepping onto a real stage in front of crowds. I tried to turn her down once more, yet she reminded me how far I had traveled from the exhausted mom surviving on leftover cereal, which instantly calmed my anxiety. I hesitated briefly then signed my name firmly. In the following days, besides regular training, we adjusted my diet finely and practiced posing again and again to build my confidence little by little.
Her weeks of preparation, the long-awaited day finally came. Dressed neatly and full of energy, I walked onto the stage bravely. Though I did not win a top prize, I received warm applause from the audience. More importantly, I regained my vitality and learned to value myself rather than only devote everything to my children. This journey taught me that taking good care of myself never means being selfish, but allows me to be a better mother and a happier individual.2025-2026学年福建厦门第一中学下学期高二6月英语试题

At Cheverton Lodge Care Home, festive jingling breaks out from 17-year-old Ted Mayer’s speaker as he launches into his Christmas set. A seasoned volunteer, he has been singing in care homes since he was six. Ted’s charm has won over many in the audience, particularly the older ladies.
But it’s not for everyone, Jeanette Hodes, 92, offers an impatient “Come on, get on with it” and leans back in her chair. On a nearby trolley (小推车), a cat’s cradle (翻花绳) has caught her eye. The string is quickly brought over to her. Soon enough she is transported to the playground of her youth, offering cheerfully-recalled anecdotes of the time when she learnt double Dutch (双人跳绳) with friends as her mother could not afford to buy her a Sindy doll.
Looking on fondly is Jill Fraser, 68, the founder of Kissing it Better (KiB), a charity working to reduce isolation in the trolley of assorted old treasures. A faded Beatrix Potter hardback. Jackie magazine and biography of Lord Mountbatten are piled on top of one another. Fraser’s team of volunteers prepared the items as recollection is thought to be a powerful tool for striking up much-needed conversation in the elderly.
Anna Giannotti, 63, an art psychotherapist who is paid for a few hours a week by KiB, says, “Sometimes the elderly are hesitant to get involved, but often when they do get involved, they just become their complete selves. I feel very humbled. It could be any of us in the future.”
The youngest volunteer of the day, Mariella Hafalla, 16, finds the frankness of the older generation refreshing. “I really enjoyed the session where we talked about what the residents did when they were younger,” she says. “I found out how people used to go outside all of the time but now we are all online so it has helped me realize the importance of going outside.”
4. What brings Jeanette Hodes back to her youth
A. Buying a Sindy doll. B. Noticing a cat’s cradle.
C. Listening to Ted’s songs. D. Learning the double Dutch.
5. Why does Fraser go around the room with the trolley
A. To offer topics that may encourage interaction.
B. To check whether the elderly can recall the past.
C. To collect personal belongings from the residents.
D. To show volunteers how to interact with old people.
6. What is Anna Giannotti’s attitude towards the elderly
A. Curious. B. Grateful. C. Empathetic. D. Protective.
7. Which phrase most closely reflects KiB’s approach
A. Activity over talk. B. Memory as a bridge.
C. Service with a smile. D. Care through exercise.
C
A watched pot never boils but time has wings when you’re having fun. The familiar saying has a basis in solid science — our sense of time does expand and contract depending on the way we experience the world. Even delicate visual features can affect how we perceive time. New research shows more memorable images seem to last longer.
Martin Wiener, head of the research, says the finding helps reveal how the brain’s time-bending strategy allows it to process and remember more information. While what is actually happening in the brain when time seems to expand remains unclear, scientists suspect it may have something to do with helping the brain process more information within a limited period of time.
This is especially relevant for the brain’s visual system which, subjected to information overload, has to rank in order of importance, allowing for limited resources. Recent research has showed some images are more naturally memorable than others.
To understand how this memorability of an image, along with a few simpler visual features such as scene size and disorder, might relate to our subjective sense of time. Wiener and his colleagues conducted related experiments, in which subjects were shown images with varying duration and were asked to categorize whether the length of time on the screen was either “short” or “long”. The next day they were given a surprise memory test to see which images they recalled seeing.
The researchers found larger scene sizes seemed to extend time while more disorderly scenes seemed to contract it. Besides the subjects perceived more memorable images as lasting longer even if they were all presented for the same amount of time. To find the underlying factor, the team fed the same memorability — ranked images to a neural (神经的) network modeled after the brain’s visual system and found more memorable images were processed faster.
The explanation for why our brain’s faster processing would slow time is that it is increasing the amount of information the brain can take in at once. Limited resources to process information may act as a sort of bottleneck, which the brain can widen when it needs to absorb more information, thus extending time.
8. What does the saying “A watched pot never boils” describe
A. The unnoticed passage of time B. The feeling that time hangs heavy
C. The hardship of preparing cuisine. D. The perception that time is confusing.
9. How does the brain’s visual system handle information
A. By setting priorities. B. By comparing similar scenes
C. By sorting randomly. D. By screening out complex images.
10. Which of the images seems to last longest if shown on the screen for an equal duration based on the study
A. B. C. D.
11. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To contrast sayings with scientific findings.
B. To explain visual features’ effect on memory.
C. To describe brain’s information overloading in time perception.
D. To explore link between image memorability and subjective time.
D
It’s Sunday evening, and you’re reviewing another week of progress on five different goals without truly moving the needle on any. You worked out twice, read 20 pages of that business book, spent quality time with family, and kept up with your meditation practice. You’re doing everything right according to the productivity experts. So why does meaningful change feel so difficult to achieve
The accepted wisdom tells us progress comes from small, consistent changes that compound over time. Consistency has its place. But there’s another dimension to transformation we rarely discuss: the catalytic (催化的) power of intense productivity bursts. It’s this more intense, temporary mode of obsession that is key.
Productivity experts often advocate sustainable habits and warn against the dangers of going too hard. But neuroscience reveals something fascinating: Our brains respond strongly to intensity.
Our brains are highly malleable; they change, sometimes in dramatic ways, to reflect new acquisition of skills and knowledge. Researchers studied London taxi drivers preparing for a test that involved memorizing 25,000 streets. When they examined the brains of these taxi drivers before and after this intensive study period, they discovered something remarkable: The posterior hippocampus, crucial for spatial navigation, physically enlarges.
This finding points to a broader principle in human neuroscience: Transformation often requires crossing intensity levels that moderate effort simply can’t reach. At the level of the brain, intense learning looks very different than the slow, consistent gains we’re more familiar with. Research finds that during periods of intense focus, our brains exhibit transient hypofrontality. The prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮层), largely responsible for self-monitoring, tends to quiet down, mirroring what is often seen in “flow states,” where the boundaries between self and task dissolve.
Most of us live in maintenance mode. We do enough not to lose ground but rarely enough to truly advance. Maybe it’s time we stopped feeling guilty about our occasional obsessions and started seeing them for what they are: the catalysts that make our steady progress meaningful.
12. What does the scene presented in paragraph 1 indicate
A. Unrealistic goals can lead to failure.
B. Constant failures may cause frustration.
C. Multitasking can not enhance productivity.
D. Sustained effort may not yield real progress.
13. What does the underlined word “malleable” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Repairable. B. Adaptable. C. Delicate. D. Analytical.
14. What happens during “transient hypofrontality”
A. You let down your guard. B. You exercise more self-regulation.
C. You feel at one with the task. D. You experience a state of confusion.
15. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Why Intense Focus Beats Steady Habits.
B. The Key to Transformation: Consistency.
C. How Changing Your Habits Leads to Growth.
D. Maintenance Mode: A Common Productivity Trap.

Don’t Rush Through Books
I love books. I love reading. I do it as much as I can. I tell people they should do the same. But when I hear that people are using apps to try to read more in less time, I just shake my head. Guys, you’re doing it wrong! Reading is like eating, dating, and travelling. The whole point is that it’s pleasurable and meaningful. ___16___
Unfortunately, reading always falls victim to seeking productivity shortcuts. People may rush through books over dinner table to save ten minutes but willingly fly across the country for a three-day conference where nothing gets accomplished. Actually, such an act tends to be penny wise and pound foolish. ___17___ Simply put: You don’t need to squeeze reading into the in-between moments of your life; you need to squeeze out the non-essentials and make reading, and reading well, the priority.
Once on a flight, I was surrounded by businessmen — the type of people who would say things like “I’m too busy to read”. And what were they doing on this flight Watching videos, texting, or chatting. I was the only one reading. In two and a half hours, I got all the way through the book. But it wasn’t finishing a book that mattered. ___18___ The book was about a man’s attempt to retract Coronado’s expedition on horseback. I was transported from that plane to the desert. I was fully engaged.
We have to remember: we don’t get a prize at the end of life for having rushed through as many books as possible. Remember: quality over quantity. Always, ___19___ The time you spend reading them, the time you carved out and gave to the process — that’s what you’ll remember at the end of your life. That is the prize.
___20___ They don’t fit it in between other tasks they make it the priority. And from that, everything follows: the more you read, the better you get, and the more you want to read. They don’t rush. They savor. And so should you.
A. It was those quiet, reflective hours.
B. You’re not supposed to rush through it.
C. Never miss the chance to win the prize.
D. It doesn’t matter how much you end up reading.
E. All great readers share one rule: they value reading.
F. When I am reading, I feel like someone else understands me.
G. What really needs changing is not reading speed but daily priorities.

With three little babies, I never took a break, completely ignoring any self-care. When I was too tired to make myself dinner, I’d just eat the kids’ leftover cereal (麦片粥). I thought this was a great plan to lose some weight and called it the “Cereal for Diet”. Back then, I knew nothing about nutrition. Of course, the Cereal for Diet failed, as did all my other attempts.
One day, after cleaning up all the mess my kids had made, I went out for a walk. I passed a gym. I looked away. Healthy people went there, but this was not me. While turning away, I saw an ad for a six-month fitness challenge. I continued my fast walk in the opposite direction, but that sign just stayed on my mind.
I still remember what finally motivated me to sign up for the challenge. It was a ten-minute period in which my son threw his spaghetti plate straight up, sending noodles and sauce flying everywhere. As soon as my husband got home, I said, “You’re in charge.”
I made a beeline for the gym, marched straight in and said, “Fix me.” And I was assigned a young and fit trainer, Emily. She asked what my goals were for the six-month challenge. At that moment, I was speechless. Noticing my embarrassment, Emily just handed me the heaviest weights I had in my lift and said, “Okay, so in six months you will compete in a body-building show.” I tried explaining, “No. I don’t want to do a show. That sounds scary.” She ignored my fear, and we jumped into strict workouts and nutrition planning.
Over the next six months, Emily forced me to focus on myself — my wants and my needs. I learned to see food as strength and sweat as progress. I learned how to fuel my body instead of starving it, balancing proteins, carbs and fats. Emily pushed me past my limits, correcting my form, timing my breaks, and cheering me on when I wanted to quit. I improved every day in the gym.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右:
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
