My exposure to diverse cultures and global perspectives was limited. However, during my senior year of high school, I had the opportunity to participate in a cross-cultural exchange program that opened my eyes to the beauty and importance of global engagement. This experience not only broadened my horizons (视野), but also shaped my worldview and made me realize the value of learning from different cultures.
My cross-cultural experience began when I was selected to visit a school in Nicaragua. As we arrived in the capital city, Managua, I was immediately struck by the stark contrast to my own hometown. The busy and noisy city, the colorful buildings, and the crowded street markets all seemed like scenes from a different world. I realized, at that time, that this journey would be a transformative experience.
During our time in Nicaragua, we stayed with a local host family who warmly welcomed us into their homes. This immersion (沉浸) into the local culture allowed us to experience firsthand the daily lives of Nicaraguan people. I still remember the smell of homemade food, the sound of children playing in the streets, and the warmth and hospitality of our host family. Despite the language barrier, we quickly formed deep connections and friendships that transcended (超越) words.
One particular experience stands out in my memory. One evening, our host family invited us to a traditional Nicaraguan celebration. As we arrived at the colorful square, I was amazed by the sights and sounds that surrounded us. The rhythmic beats of traditional music filled the air, and people were joyously dancing and celebrating. It was at that moment when I found myself moving to the rhythm and enjoying the local customs that I realized the power of cultural exchange. I felt a sense of unity and connection with the people around me, despite our differences. This experience taught me that understanding and respecting different cultures can bring people closer together and help build a more connected world.
4. How did the exchange program affect the author
A.It shaped his view on his country.
B.It made him fall in love with travel.
C.It deepened his understanding of the world.
D.It helped him know the importance of learning.
5. What does the underlined word “stark” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Clear.
B.Fair.
C.Expected.
D.Common.
6. What did the author say about the language barrier
A.It created misunderstandings at first.
B.It made cultural immersion impossible.
C.It failed to block genuine human bonds.
D.It was overcome through formal lessons.
7. What did the author learn from the exchange program
A.Music and dance were universal languages.
B.Celebrations brought people together naturally.
C.Local customs were worth experiencing firsthand.
D.True connection went beyond cultural differences.

Newly published research finds that tropical forests can rebound up to twice as fast after deforestation (毁林) when their soils contain enough nitrogen (氮). The study shows that what happens below ground plays a major role in how quickly forests return after land has been cleared. Scientists led by the University of Leeds launched the largest and longest experiment ever designed to examine how nutrients shape forest regrowth.
The researchers selected 76 forest plots across Central America and monitored them for as long as 20 years. Each site differed in age and size, allowing the team to follow how trees grew and died as forests recovered over time. To test the role of nutrients, the plots received different treatments. Some were given nitrogen fertiliser, some were given phosphorus (磷) fertiliser, some received both nutrients, and some were left untreated. This approach allowed the scientists to directly compare how forests responded under different soil conditions.
The results show that soil nutrients strongly influence how quickly tropical forests regrow. During the first 10 years of recovery, forests with adequate nitrogen rebounded at about twice the rate of those lacking it. Phosphorus alone did not produce the same effect.
Wen, who carried out the research, said, “Our study is exciting because it suggests there are ways we can boost the capture and storage of greenhouse gases through reforestation by managing the nutrients available to trees.”
Although nitrogen fertiliser was used in the experiment, the researchers do not recommend fertilising forests. Widespread fertiliser use could lead to harmful side effects, including emissions of N2O, a powerful greenhouse gas. Instead, the team suggests practical alternatives. Forest managers could plant trees from the bean family, which naturally add nitrogen to the soil. Another option is restoring forests in areas that already have sufficient nitrogen due to the effects of air pollution.
8. What is the key to forest regrowth
A.The forest size.
B.The tropical location.
C.The type of nutrient.
D.The land-clearing method.
9. Why did the researchers treat the forest plots differently
A.To find proper trees.
B.To make a comparison.
C.To choose the best plot.
D.To test the soil nutrients.
10. What made researchers refuse to recommend nitrogen fertiliser
A.Its potential environmental risks.
B.Its poor availability in rural areas.
C.Its limited effect on forest growth.
D.Its high cost and complex application.
11. What can be the best title for the text
A.Air Pollution Accidentally Helps Forest Recover
B.Scientists Measure Tropical Forest Recovery Time
C.Nitrogen Fertiliser May Do Harm to the Atmosphere
D.Scientists Found the Soil Secret That Doubles Forest Regrowth

Many residents viewed bottled water sold in large refillable containers as the safest choice. However, testing showed that among the 11 water sources examined, bottled water was the most likely to contain coliform bacteria (大肠菌群). “We found there is a clear gap between what people believe about water safety and what is actually happening in their homes, and that can have major public health implications,” said Dr Brooke Ramay, a researcher from Washington State University.
Unsafe drinking water continues to be a serious global health issue. More than 4 billion people around the world lack access to safely managed water, and polluted water contributes to millions of cases of diarrheal illness each year, especially among children. Polluted water is also increasingly linked to the spread of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria (耐药菌).
The research team surveyed 60 households, split evenly between urban and rural areas, and collected water samples from several sources, including bottled, piped, well, spring, and filtered water. The samples were analyzed for coliform bacteria. Despite being widely trusted, bottled water was six times more likely to test positive for coliform bacteria than other water sources. Only 17% of bottled water samples met World Health Organization standards for safe drinking water.
The study also highlighted how cultural beliefs influence everyday behavior. People who trust their water source are less likely to boil or treat it, and those who rely on bottled water often skip cleaning water dispensers (饮水机).
“Our results suggest that beliefs about water safety may actually contribute to pollution because people do not take the same steps with sources they trust as they do with other less trusted ones,” said Ramay. “Understanding how people view water safety is key to improving public health. When people believe their water is safe, they don’t take extra measures, but when they see a risk, they change their behavior.”
12. What does Ramay imply in paragraph 1
A.Views on water safety differ from reality.
B.Bottled water is probably safe.
C.People know water safety well.
D.Home water affects public health.
13. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A.Global health issues.
B.The effect of polluted water.
C.Water management problems.
D.The spread of bacteria in water.
14. What does the study find about bottled water
A.It has poor test results though trusted by people.
B.It is unimproved when dispensers are cleaned.
C.It meets standards more than other sources.
D.It is the safest choice among all sources.
15. What might Ramay agree with about drinking water safely
A.Choosing the water you like best.
B.Never believing bottled water is safe.
C.Changing the thought of clean water.
D.Understanding water safety correctly.

Have you ever used blue light-blocking glasses when working on a computer, thinking they could protect your eyes I have been blamed for reading in the dark secretly just for a moment. 16
One common belief is that looking at an electronic device up close is bad for your eyes. This is true. While reading in the dark for a while does not permanently worsen eyesight, it can create temporary eye strain because you are forced to hold a book close to your face. 17 After every 20 minutes of close reading, look at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
On the contrary, spending time outside appears to help eyesight. Outdoor time can reduce the risk of developing nearsightedness in children, possibly because sunlight encourages the retina (视网膜) to produce certain beneficial substances. 18 Too much exposure to sunlight can cause severe damage to eyes. Consequently, wearing sunglasses that block UV rays is essential for protection.
Regarding screens, the fear of blue light is largely unfounded. No solid evidence confirms that typical exposure damages the retina or that blue light-blocking glasses surely improve eye health. 19 When we stare at a screen, we simply do not blink (眨眼) as often as we should, leading to foggy vision.
20 Smoking is definitely bad for eye health while carrots are indeed good for your eyes. Carrots are rich in vitamins C and E, which can slow the progression of an age-related eye illness.
A.However, balance is key.
B.Therefore, sunshine is the best medicine.
C.Lifestyle choices also play a significant role.
D.Anyway, there exist some incorrect ideas about eye health.
E.Instead, screens harm eyesight primarily by causing dry eyes.
F.To help reduce strain, it is recommended to obey the 20-20-20 rule.
G.Looking into the distance for 20 seconds helps form good reading habits.

Archeologists (考古学家) in China have unearthed 36 they believe is an ancient astronomical calendar (天文历). The 23 wooden pieces were found inside a about 2,200-year-old tomb in China’s Wulong District, Chongqing. They are carved with Chinese 37 (character) connected to an astronomical calendar known as Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. It was started during the Shang Dynasty, 38 ruled from 1600 BCE to about 1050 BCE. This is the first time that written wooden pieces linked to the ancient calendar 39 (find) in a tomb.
The archeologists say round holes at the edge 40 the wooden pieces show all 23 were once tied and used together. However, they do not know how the calendar, which was based on a 60-year cycle, 41 (exact) worked. They think that one piece stood for the then-present year, while the rest were used 42 (represent) other years.

The copper spears, bows and arrows, and other weapons found alongside suggest he may have been good at martial arts. The tomb also contained 44 (vary) high-quality objects, including copper and bronze pots. This has led archeologists to doubt 45 (it) owner was a person of high position.

A village farmer named Tom was going through some major challenges of his family. He had to take a loan from a moneylender of his village, whose name was Smith. Smith was old, greedy and unmarried and fancied marrying Tom’s beautiful daughter, Mary. One day Tom went to Smith to ask him for some more time to repay the loan. Smith pretended to be angry for a while and then proposed a bargain. He said that if Tom did not repay his debt, he would be punished or he had an option to let Smith marry Mary and all his debt would be forgiven.
Both Tom and Mary were shocked by the proposal. But there was no way Tom could pay back the money soon and he did not want his beautiful daughter to marry the old and cruel Smith.
The cunning (狡猾的) Smith suggested that they leave it to chance. In an attempt to persuade Tom to accept his deal, Smith made an attractive condition in deciding the fate of the father and daughter. He would keep a black chess piece and a white one in a bag. Mary then had to choose a piece which would decide her fate. If she picked the black piece, she would have to marry Smith and her father’s debt would be forgiven. If she picked the white piece, she did not need to marry Smith and her father’s debt would still be forgiven. If she refused to pick the chess piece, Tom would be thrown into prison.
They were standing before a chessboard covered with black and white pieces. Smith even called the nearby villagers to witness the event, so that no party could walk away from their word. Smith bent over, picked two pieces and kept them in a bag. The sharp-eyed girl noticed that he had picked two black pieces instead of a black one and a white one. Smith then asked the girl to pick a piece from the bag.

Mary was confused about what to do. An idea suddenly flashed through her mind. She pretended to be nervous and reached into the bag. She took out a piece and quickly dropped it onto the muddy ground before anyone could see its color. The chess piece was covered with mud immediately. “We can check the remaining one in the bag to know which one I chose,” she said calmly. Everyone agreed, for Smith had claimed there were one black and one white piece.
Smith dared not admit his dishonesty in front of the villagers. He had no choice but to take out a black piece from the bag. It seemed that Mary must have picked the white one by default. All villagers cheered for Mary’s wisdom. Smith could not break his promise, so he canceled Tom’s debt at last. Mary saved her father and herself with her quick wit.
