When Jessika Kattah was put in a wheelchair, she knew she wouldn’t be able to walk again.
But she could still fly.
Kattah and other disabled people have found a home once a month at iFly, an indoor skydiving center in Davie, US. Every second Thursday of the month, iFly hosts All Abilities Night, at which individuals with physical challenges can safely try the free-fall simulation in a giant wind tunnel.
And if you’re thinking that floating in a giant wind tunnel is nothing like jumping out of an airplane, Kattah is happy to tell you that you’re wrong.
“You definitely get that feeling of flying,” said Kattah, who did skydiving twice. “But the fact that I’m able to get out of my chair makes it so great. You forget about your disability; you’re just like everybody else.”
The experience is safe and almost anyone can participate. Few people come out without a big smile on their face, and there will be applause from the people sitting in the observation area.
Chuck Petscher, who is blind, had never been the type of person to try anything risky. But recently he decided to give indoor skydiving a shot. “I’ll do this, but I’m not jumping out of an airplane,” he joked.
“When you’re disabled, you usually have to do things in a different way from everybody else,” he said. “Here, you’re doing what everybody else is doing. That’s what turned me on to it.”
This is also why Kattah has started sharing her experiences on a blog. She wants to send a message to people like her that even though they may feel restricted by their disability, they can always do something they never thought they’d be able to do.
“If you want to do something, just do it. Don’t let fear guide you. In the end, you’re going to be so happy you did it,” she says.
24. What’s special about All Abilities Night
A.One can travel on an airplane.
B.One can jump out of an airplane.
C.It takes place four times a month.
D.It offers special service for the disabled.
25. After experiencing skydiving, most people will
A.feel regretful
B.feel frightened
C.get a sense of achievement
D.get a sense of responsibility
26. Why did Chuck Petscher try indoor skydiving
A.He wanted to be appreciated.
B.He liked showing off in public.
C.He could be treated as equals.
D.He was interested in adventures.
27. Why does Kattah share her experience on her blog
A.To share her joy and excitement.
B.To promote the skydiving center.
C.To offer some suggestions for the disabled.
D.To encourage others to challenge themselves.

Even though we may believe that it’s important to say thank you, sometimes expressing gratitude is easier said than done. We might find ourselves getting hung up on the best way to deliver the message.
However, it’s possible that we might be making our thanks more complex. In a paper, researchers compared the effects of expressing thanks in person, over a video call, and over text. And, while people generally expect an in-person thank you to be the most effective, what happened in reality was quite different: Sending a thank-you over text was almost as effective as that. Additionally, texting may be especially well-suited for situations where we feel awkward or embarrassed about expressing our appreciation.
In the study, 219 college students participated in a gratitude activity in which they wrote about three things they were grateful for over a two- week period. After writing, the students were asked to actually thank the persons involved. Some connected with the gratitude recipients (接受者) in person, others via video call, and others via text. At the beginning and end of the two weeks, participants completed surveys measuring their feelings of well-being, connections with others, loneliness and happiness.
The researchers found that people who expressed gratitude gained increased happiness, with only a few differences for the different methods of gratitude expression. Overall, video calls were just as beneficial as meeting in person. Texting was slightly less effective than video calling- it didn’t make people feel more connected and happier, while video calling did. However, participants who sent their thanks over text still experienced benefits: Texting improved their well- being and reduced their loneliness.
Overall, however, the message is that we shouldn’t worry about finding just the “best” way to express our gratitude. In fact, you’re better off sending a quick thank you shortly after you receive the kindness than waiting for an occasion to schedule an in-person visit. Don’t put it off just for finding the best way—many times our gratitude goes unsaid because we spend too much time on the details.
28. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.Making a video call.
B.Sending a text message.
C.Expressing thanks in person.
D.Writing a thank-you letter.
29. Why did the researchers ask the students to finish surveys
A.To find the effect of expressing thanks on them.
B.To measure their physical health.
C.To collect a lot more ways to express thanks.
D.To know their views on gratitude.
30. What did the research suggest
A.In-person gratitude was less likely to be accepted.
B.Expressing gratitude could benefit mental health.
C.Ways of gratitude expression should be improved.
D.Texting made the gratitude recipients much happier.
31. What are we advised to do to express thanks
A.Search for the best way.
B.Wait for an in-person visit.
C.Express gratitude in time.
D.Make careful preparations.

Many retirees spend time playing games like crossword puzzles, and social games like chess. These games keep people thinking and give their brains a good workout. But can they really help improve memory
The idea of using games that are specifically designed to brain training is very complicated, but research published in The Cambridge University Press has found that brain games certainly make people think and use acquired skills.
Brain games sharpen certain thinking skills like short-term memory decision making, planning skills, and reaction time according to Dr. Julie Brody-Magid, clinical director of the Memory Disorders Assessment Clinic at Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital. Many of these skills decrease as people age, especially after retirement,
“Learning to use your brain in response to other forms of stimulation can help strengthen valuable mental skills, which older people continue to need and rely on every day,” Brody-Magid said. The best way to build up cognitive (认知的) reserve is to stay physically active, especially when you age, by taking care of your health by eating right and managing chronic diseases like high blood pressure, and diabetes. All of these go hand-in-hand with playing brain games.“In this way, participating in brain games actually can help with cognition, but it’s a team effort,” said Brody-Magid. “You can’t do it by doing crossword puzzles alone.”
So, if you want to mix it up and combine different types of brain boosting games, here’s a selection from Very Well Mind. Sudoku, a number placement game, relies on short-term memory and concentration. Crossword puzzles are the classic brain game that revolves around long-term memory and knowledge. You can also find them in newspapers and books. If you prefer online games, you can check out Braingle, a free site that has over 15,000 puzzles, riddles, and more. You can even create your own puzzles to get your creative juices flowing too.
So, play some brain games to exercise your brain cells and harvest all of the benefits.
32. What is the purpose of the games in paragraph 2
A.To train brain.
B.To improve creativity.
C.To work out physically.
D.To get relaxed.
33. How can older people acquire strong mental power according to Brody-Magid
A.By only staying physically active.
B.By exercising their brain frequently.
C.By participating in more team work.
D.By stimulating their cognitive ability.
34. What does the author suggest doing to improve your creative ability
A.Relying on Sudoku.
B.Doing crossword puzzles.
C.Checking out Braingle.
D.Designing puzzles in person.
35. What is the text mainly about
A.The elderly should play more games than the young.
B.Brain games help people solve complicated problems.
C.Playing brain games helps improve your memory.
D.Crossword puzzles hold the secret of your creativity.

I’d always been told to take care of my older brother, Brian, who was born weak and small. I’d often tie his shoes or prepare another glass of water for him. My mom saw my larger size and strong body as a sign that I was to be a kind of guardian angel (守护天使) for Brian. However, that was not the case.
One day our school sponsored a pumpkin-carving contest. First prize was $100, and I knew just how I would spend it. There was a brand-new game I was dying to own. So I decided the first place bonus definitely had to land in my pocket.
When I had to carve the perfect pumpkin I’d picked out, it dawned on me that with my big clumsy fingers I’d surely screw it up (搞砸). I thought of Brian’s smaller, delicate hands and knew he was the man for the job. I immediately begged Brian. Unexpectedly, he asked for a cut. That was fifty-fifty. Quickly doing the math in my head, I figured out even if I split (分摊) the first prize, I’d still have enough cash for the game. So I gave in to Brian’s demands. With skillful hands Brian carved the perfect face, and now we had the best pumpkin ever.
Then the unexpected happened: We came in second. Unfortunately, second prize was only $50, and I needed every penny of that to buy the game. The day of the awards ceremony, the principal handed over the money to me because Brian was home, sick with cold.
If he really wanted to win, he would have been here today, I thought to myself, justifying stealing the cash from under poor Brian’s runny nose. With hardly a thought, I ran to the store and bought my dream game. That night when Brian asked if we had won, I denied, afraid to look into his eyes.
The whole thing was never mentioned again until the day when Brian was packing for college. I played my usual role in helping him pack when I came across an old album filled with photos he had taken as the school photographer.
Paragraph 1:
I was enjoying the photos when one caught my eye.

Dear Chris,
I’m writing to offer some suggestions for the coming spring outing. I suggest we go to the suburban botanical garden and hold two activities.
First, we can have a picnic and share homemade snacks to strengthen our bond. Besides, a plant-recognition game will help us learn more about nature.
The garden has fresh air and beautiful flowers, perfect for relaxing after heavy study. I believe we’ll have a wonderful time there.
Yours,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
I was enjoying the photos when one caught my eye. It was our carved pumpkin, clearly taken right after the contest. On the back of the photo was Brian’s handwriting: “My brother lied about the prize money, but I don’t mind. He wanted that game so badly.” My heart sank instantly. All these years, he had known my lie the whole time and never blamed me.
Paragraph 2:
“You actually knew and didn’t say anything “ I was shocked. Brian smiled softly and said he valued our brotherhood more than money. I felt ashamed and apologized sincerely for my selfishness. From then on, I learned that trust and love between family members are far more precious than any material goods. I promised I would always be honest and considerate to him.
