Maybe you’ll meet a word that you don’t know during an exam. Most students may be nervous if a dictionary
is not around them. But there’s no need to worry. There are some ways to help you guess the meaning of a word
without a dictionary.
Read the whole sentence again. Your first step is to go back and read the whole sentence again. You may
forget what you are reading when you meet a new word. Then try to think about the content of the sentence.
Try guessing the meaning by the background. This will make it different from other parts and you’ll pick it
from the rest of the sentence easily. You can often use other words in the sentence to help you find out the meaning
of the unknown word.
Think about what else is happening in the sentence. For example, maybe you are looking at a sentence that
says, “It was a very sultry day in the middle of the summer.” Even if you don’t know “sultry”, you can connect it
to summer weather with your common sense. It can help you understand the word easily.
In a word, don’t be afraid of new words. Try your best to understand them by using these ways. Then you can
also understand the sentence or passage better.
15. Which way can help you pick the unknown word from the rest of the sentence easily
A. Rereading the whole passage. B. Guessing by the background. C. Asking the teacher for help.
16. What does the underlined word “sultry” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Very hot. B. Very cold. C. Warm.
17. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Dictionaries are useless in exams.
B. New words are always hard to understand.
C. Using the right ways can help understand.
第 5页/共 17页
18. What’s the passage mainly about
A. Advising not being afraid of reading without dictionaries.
B. Teaching some ways to guess the meaning of new words.
C. Explaining the importance of understanding sentences.

(One day, Gulliver was caught in a storm and his ship hit a rock. He was so tired that he fell asleep. When he
woke up, he found himself in Lilliput and many small people were around him. )
The Emperor and I spoke to each other, but neither of us understood a single word. I tried many languages, but
no one could understand my words—not even the Emperor’s cleverest followers.
After about two hours, the Emperor left with his wife, children and his servants. He ordered some strong
guards to stop the crowd of people hurting me. An officer told the guards to hold six men who made me angry.
These men were given to me and I had to choose their punishment. I put five of them in my pocket. Then I
pretended (假装) to eat the sixth man. The poor man shouted terribly. The guards were nervous when they saw my
knife in my hand. But I only cut the binding (捆绑物) round his hands. Then I put all six men on the ground.
The people and the guards were very happy with my great kindness. They told the Emperor about it. The
Emperor ordered his men to make a bed for me and they had to join hundreds of their little beds together to make
one big bed for me. At the same time, the Emperor asked all his ministers for their advice on how to deal with me.
They were very nervous. If they set me free, I might be dangerous. I was eating so much food that soon all the
people would be very hungry. The farmers could not grow enough food to feed all of us. The wise men thought that
they should kill me. But it was impossible for them to dig a hole big enough to bury me.

You may have a house robot that can do housework for you. But is it so smart Let’s meet Laura. It is a robot
working in the National Library in Madrid, Spain. Its job is to copy down the old books and writings in the library’
s collection. Then see Aurora, a headless dog-sized robot used to keep birds and other animals away at an Alaskan
airport. Watch another 1.8 meter-tall robot called EveR6, waving its arms to guide musicians through a
performance.
Those robots above require artificial intelligence (AI). AI is a computer system that can understand languages,
make decisions and solve problems. AI can be taught skills using a process called machine learning. Humans give
AI information such as books, photos or videos to train it. The more information it studies, the better it can do its
job.
________ For example, when you watch TV, AI is watching you. It’ ll know what your favorite is and suggest
similar ones. In hospitals, AI is very good at suggesting treatments and can even invent new medicines. To cut
down food waste, some schools introduce online systems for the students to choose meals ahead of time. In cities,
AI is used to watch out for cars that make black smoke. It works together with the police and transportation teams
to stop them and keep the air clean. AI can help us fight climate change by finding clever ways to reduce energy
use.
第 7页/共 17页
Some people worry that AI will take away many jobs. They also fear that AI might get out of our control and
bring danger to humans. However, AI is expected to be a useful tool. It can help humans do more things in less
time. People believe flying cars will be made to help us get out of morning traffic jams easily. Humans hope AI can
even solve our energy problems completely. Anyway, humans and AI still have a long way to go.
25. In which pictures can we see Aurora and EveR6
A. AB B. BD C. BC
26. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. Why are AI robots made B. Where is AI used C. What is AI
27. Which of the following can be put in ________
A. AI will be developed rapidly.
B. Humans depend too much on AI.
C. AI has become part of daily life.
28. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. AI will take away people’s jobs.
B. AI can help people solve energy problems right now.
C. AI is a useful tool and has a long development journey.
29. What would the writer write about after the last paragraph
A. The end of AI. B. The way to get along with AI. C. The skill of making AI robots.

阅读下面短文,完成短文后的问题。
Hi Diana,
It’s so great to hear from you. Life in Paris is pretty good! I was a little lonely at first, but I’m making some
第 10页/共 17页
friends. After some embarrassing experiences at a party last month, my friends taught me local customs, and I’d
like to share some tips with you.
First, don’t arrive early to a party. It’s normal to be on time or a few minutes late. I once arrived 10 minutes
early to a party and surprised my friend. He was still getting everything ready.
Second, bring a gift when you visit someone. When I attended my friend’s party, I didn’t bring anything. It
wasn’t his birthday, but everyone else brought gifts like chocolates or flowers to thank him for the party. I was so
embarrassed!
Third, try to dress properly for the event. At that party it was surprising to see how nicely everyone was
dressed. It was summer, so I was just wearing a simple blouse and shorts. But everyone else was dressed so well
that I felt silly.
Fourth, avoid asking personal questions unless you know the person quite well. Many French people are quite
private. They don’t like it when others ask them about their age, their family, whether they are married, or how
much money they make. Food and culture, however, are safe conversation topics.
Last but not least, make sure you use French whenever you can. Lots of people speak English here, but you
can develop closer relationships with them if you use French. It’s very important in their culture. I found that even
a simple “merci” goes a long way! You’ll see what I mean as soon as you get here!
Yours,
Nancy

My Favourite Sports
My favourite sport is running.
I go running twice a week after school. I love it because it helps me keep healthy and relax myself after busy
study. Running brings me great influence. It always makes me happy and confident. When I run, all my tiredness
goes away. Here are my suggestions for sports. We should warm up first before running and wear comfortable
shoes. Also, remember to drink enough water after exercise.
All in all, doing sports is really good for us.
