High School Programmes in Australia
Beautiful weather, friendly people and a widely varied landscape are just a few of the reasons you should choose to spend time in Australia as a high school student. Here are some programmes you can choose from.
High School Exchange
Individuals studying for a semester or full year in Australia will usually live with a host family. This is a great opportunity for students to see what daily family life is like in Australia. Students learning English will see their language skills improve by communicating with their new friends and host family, while those familiar with the language already can use this opportunity to learn more about the day-to-day life in Australia.
Youth Travel Tours
Travel tours for teens are a wonderful way for high school students to spend a short, concentrated amount of time abroad. Tours are usually for different themes such as cooking, adventure travel, or volunteerism. Students will have a fun, unique experience while incorporating educational components like environmental or cultural studies — and all without missing your normal coursework back home.
Summer Study Programme
For students who only have a few months of the summer break available, an advanced summer programme is perfect. Just keep in mind, the summer of the northern hemisphere is actually the winter of Australia. Oftentimes these summer programmes can be partnered with universities that will allow students to receive college credits.

Growing up, I understood one thing about my dad: He knew everything. In my teen years, he taught me things I’d need to know to survive in the real world: how to drive a stick shift, how to check the car tyre’s pressure, and the correct knife to use to cut a cantaloupe.
When I moved out on my own, I called him at least once a week, usually when something broke in my apartment and I needed to know how to fix it: the toilet, the air-conditioning, the wall, once, when I threw a shoe at a terrifying spider.
But then, eventually, I needed him less. I got married, and my husband had most of the knowledge I lacked about gutter cleaning and water heaters and nondestructive insect removal. For everything else, we had Google. I didn’t know when it happened, but our conversations turned into six words when I called. Me: “Hi, Dad.” Him: “Hi, sweet. Here’s Mom.”
I loved my dad, of course, but I wondered at times if maybe he had already shared everything I needed to know. Maybe I’d heard all his stories. Maybe, after knowing a man for 40 years, there’s nothing left to say. Then, two summers ago, my husband, our four kids and I moved in with my parents for three weeks while our house was being painted. They owned a lake house, and my dad asked me to help him rebuild the bulkhead. It was a hard and manual job. We got wet and sandy. But as we put the new bulkhead together piece by piece, my dad knew exactly what went where. I looked at him, “How do you know how to build a bulkhead ” “I spent a summer in college building it on the Jersey Shore.”
“You did ” I thought I knew everything about my dad, but I never knew this. I realized that maybe it’s not that there’s nothing left to say. Maybe it’s just that I’ve spent my life asking him the wrong questions. That day, my dad talked about what he had learned and what he could do excitedly. We chatted and chatted for a long time.
A few weeks later, after my family and I moved back into our painted house, I called my parents. “Hi, sweets,” he said. “Here’s Mom.” “Wait, Dad,” I said. “How are you ” We ended up talking about everything he was working on. To anyone else, it would sound like a normal conversation between a dad and his daughter. But to me, it was novel and a new beginning. I spent the first part of my life needing to talk to him. Now I talk to him because I want to.
4. Why did the author feel that she needed to call her dad before she got married
A.She called to make sure he was pleased.
B.She wanted to talk to him for knowledge.
C.She knew her parents missed her so much.
D.She was asked to call him once a week.
5. Why hadn’t the author got something to talk with her father before she moved back to be with him
A.Her father was old and he didn’t keep up with the world.
B.Her father always thought he was right in everything.
C.She didn’t have more to learn from him than she thought.
D.She spent her younger ages asking him too many questions.
6. What does the father’s answer “Hi, sweet. Here’s Mom.” mean
A.The author’s mother is answering the phone.
B.The author’s mother knows what has happened.
C.He will give the phone to the author’s mother.
D.He finds the author’s mother sweet and kind.
7. Which of the following words best describe the father
A.Creative and faithful.
B.Selfless and brave.
C.Inspiring and generous.
D.Loving and experienced.

For a vast majority of us, our smartphones are the lifeline. If it is lost, a lot is unachievable, such as getting guided to work and ordering coffee. This sounds like a nightmare. But it should not be exactly far-fetched.
Despite being more digitally connected than ever, we are lonelier and more anxious. Anxiety rates increased by 25% globally. Depression now affects over 280 million people worldwide. All of this arises from our growing dependence on social media and smart technologies designed to offer quick relief but often at the expense of deep, meaningful activities.
While these conveniences offer short-term relief, they may weaken our thinking skills. For example, GPS has undeniably transformed the way we travel. But a 2020 study found that frequent GPS users struggle more with self-guided exploration. Over time, those who relied more on GPS showed a sharp decrease in spatial memory and problem-handling skills. However, reducing dependence on these conveniences can result in discomfort. In seeking comfort today, we might be trading away some discomfort.
That is the problem: the very discomfort we avoid is often what strengthens us. Regarding stress, a kind of discomfort, as a challenge rather than a threat leads to better outcomes. Research shows that mild stress can improve adaptability. Neuroscience reveals that neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to form new connections — is sharpened through challenging experiences. This adaptability counts for developing resilience, a process fueled by both mental challenges and active effort.
But this doesn’t mean we should abandon comfort entirely; it’s to balance it with intentional discomfort. Think of it as small and manageable difficulties that keep our mental and emotional muscles strong, such as writing with a pen, or washing dishes by hand. These small acts are enough to reawaken the resilience we’ve buried under layers of ease. So, the next time you feel the pull of ease, pause. Ask yourself: Is this momentary comfort helping me grow or is it keeping me stuck Choosing discomfort isn’t easy, but sometimes, it’s worth it.

A.Exploring a city by using GPS.
B.Taking the stairs instead of the lift.

A.To persuade readers to buy good smartphones.
B.To encourage readers to accept discomfort.
C.To urge readers to employ smart technologies.
D.To remind readers to think creatively.

Recycling is a great way of doing your bit for the environment and helping to protect the earth’s precious resources. However, a new study has revealed that our desire to be sustainable maybe doing more harm than good. According to waste company Biffa, this is because of “wish-cycling” — assuming that items such as disposable coffee cups and pizza boxes will be recycled if put in the recycling bin. In fact, pollution from those items or other non-recyclables can result in recyclable items that have been put in the correct bin going to landfill. David Heaton, a business director at Biffa, said: “Pollution happens when items are disposed of in the wrong bins or haven’t been cleaned before being recycled.”
Experts at Biffa analyzed the amounts of non-target and non-recyclable materials that entered UK material recycling facilities between 2016 and 2020. It was found that, in 2016, the average pollution rate of recycling waste was 13.4 percent, rising over four years to 17 percent by the end of 2020. This shows that, even as people are becoming more eco-conscious, wish-cycling is increasing both in households and businesses.
The Biffa experts say that one of the best ways to prevent pollution of recycling is to clean recyclable waste before putting it in the bin. They suggest cutting off the top of old pizza boxes and only recycling that part to avoid pollution from the grease. Check the on-packaging recycling label to check it can actually be recycled When it comes to plastics, Biffa recommends checking the resin code, the number in the plastic triangle, to know whether it should go in the recycling bin. In general, resin codes 1, 2, 4 and 5 are recyclable, while 3, 6 and 7 are not. Larger items, like electronics, furniture and batteries, can also be recycled but often can not go in household recycling bins as they need specialist separating. These will need to be taken to recycling centers or sustainable waste management companies.
“It’s vital as a nation that we get better at effective ‘pre-cycling’— sorting waste correctly before collection to reduce pollution rates,” added Mr. Heaton.
12. What’s the truth of “wish-cycling” according to the first paragraph
A.The desire to lead a sustainable life.
B.The good intention to help recycling.
C.The habit of throwing items that end up in landfills.
D.The practice of recycling items that can not be recycled.
13. What has experts at Biffa concluded after their analysis
A.People are becoming more eco-conscious.
B.Wish-cycling is on the rise in recent years.
C.Pollution happens less frequently in recycling facilities.
D.People are used to cleaning recyclable waste before putting it in the bin.
14. Which of the following is a proper way of recycling
A.Dispose of electronics together with household waste.
B.Skip the step of checking the on-packaging recycling label.
C.Check the resin code of plastics to see whether it is recyclable or not.
D.Cutoff the top of old pizza box and throw the rest to the recycling bin.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A.Recycling: a Big Project
B.Wish-cycling: a New Trend
C.Wish-cycling: a Growing Concern
D.Pre-cycling: an Effective Method

What makes sports stars so good at what they do How can a violinist effortlessly perform a challenging piece without looking at the music
___16___ More specifically, it can be termed “overlearning”. Overlearning happens when you practice or study something even after you’ve already mastered it.
___17___ However, it doesn’t always stay there. If that skill or information isn’t used again soon after, the brain will clear it away. This is a big challenge not only for teachers and trainers but also for learners.
Some factors can help keep the learning in place. ___18___ Interaction (互动) is necessary. If the process makes the learner laugh or struggle, or it requires additional help, it is less likely to be forgotten. Besides, when the information is revisited regularly, the brain recognizes its importance.
But how can we keep revisiting the same points in training practices without becoming bored That’s where overlearning is important. Skills and knowledge should be revisited in different ways. For example, in tennis, serving is extremely important, and there are seven steps in achieving a perfect serve. Coaches will get players to practice each of those seven stages repeatedly. ___19___ The learning goal remains the same; it's the method that changes.
While overlearning has its advantages, it can also create a false sense of mastery. If you’ve practised something over and over again, you can certainly be highly fluent. But it’s easy to confuse fluency and understanding. For instance, there’s a big difference between knowing all the features of a product and effectively using those features to make a sale. ___20___
A.Testing is good for active learning.
B.The answer lies in learning through repetition.
C.Students benefit from overlearning difficult texts.
D.To prevent boredom, they'll introduce various ways.
E.Applying knowledge is just as important as storing it.
F.Primarily, information should be learned in an active way.
G.Newly learned information remains in our brain for a while.

My brother Jack was so smart that he earned a full scholarship to Harvard. I often wished he wasn’t so perfect because it made me feel like I had to work twice as hard just to prove myself to others. On the one hand, his success was a challenge that I enjoyed, but on the other hand, it was a huge amount of pressure that I struggled to cope with.
To balance his record in high school, I felt like I was constantly running on a treadmill, devoting every moment to a non-stop race. There was no room for relaxation as I pursued that perfect record. My life seemed to be compressed into a series of endless tasks and deadlines. “I needed an A,” I repeated to myself before the biology test, so that I would maintain my perfect record and secure a place on the honor roll. I studied till the last minute of lunch and rushed to class. I felt a sense of confidence as I glanced over the first page of the test, quickly filling in the answers with a smile. However, as I turned to the last page, my mind went blank. Time ticked by, and soon, the classroom began to empty as students finished their tests and left, except me. “Lara, class ended. I need you to hand in your test,” Mrs. Phloem said, stretching out her hand. Unwillingly, I handed her the test paper.
The next day, I received my test back. I stared at the red mark in shock: 76. Not even a B minus, my mind screamed. Just average. It’s over. No perfect record. I felt an unprecedented sense of frustration and disappointment. After school, I dragged my heavy feet back home. When I pushed open the door, Jack was sitting on the couch, reading. Seeing his leisurely state, I cried, hard to contain the jealousy and sadness in my heart. Jack immediately noticed the depression on my face. He asked with concern, “What’s wrong, Lara ” Blinded by frustration mixed with a touch of jealousy, I shouted at him, “How I wish you were not so perfect!”

Dear Anxiety,
I’m sorry to hear you’re suffering from heavy exam pressure. It’s quite normal to feel worried before tests, so don’t be too hard on yourself.
Here are my suggestions. First, make a reasonable daily review plan to avoid cramming. Second, take short walks or listen to music to relax when tired. Besides, talk with your teachers or parents if you feel upset.
Wish you steady progress and good grades in the coming exams.
Yours,

五、读后续写范文
With a touch of hurt and surprise in his eyes, Jack gently approached me. He sat beside me and patted my shoulder softly. He told me he once failed a key exam in high school and also felt worthless for a long time. He said perfect scores never equal a valuable person. What truly matters is continuous effort instead of chasing a flawless record. He encouraged me to accept my imperfection and see my own shining points.
His words blew my depression away and changed my mindset. I realized I had been trapped in the wrong standard for too long. I shouldn’t compare myself with Jack blindly. From then on, I stopped forcing myself to get all A’s. I learned to enjoy the process of studying and forgive my mistakes. Gradually, I felt relaxed and regained passion for learning.
