About a year ago, my mother turned on the dishwasher and went to the airport to drop off my father who was headed overseas on a work trip. By the time she got back, there was water all over the kitchen floor. We called a repairman, only to be told the dishwasher would have to be replaced. A new one was ordered but it would not arrive for more than a month. As my mother had a tight schedule, I had no choice but to take on the task of washing dishes by hand after dinner.
I soon found myself faced with a pile of thankless dishes in the sink, urging me to get on with it and deliver on my duty. At the beginning, I was annoyed when doing the dishes. I was in a rush to be done with them since I had an endless list of things to finish as a high school student taking a tough course load. Gradually, I realized that, for about 15 minutes every day, I could slow down time and forget everything in the world as my mind, eyes and hands focused on a simple task that would always result in success.
We did finally get the new dishwasher placed. However, I continued to wash dishes by hand after dinner, perplexing my mother greatly.
Washing dishes by hand has been more educational than I could have ever imagined. I’m running around stressed most of the day. There are homework, projects, quizzes and tests competing for my attention and time. I’ve caged myself in a prison of my dreams and expectations, cut off from many aspects of the world.
However, standing at the same spot every day in front of the kitchen window washing dishes has allowed me to recover some of it. My mind has taken snap-shots of the changing view over the yard outside the kitchen window and reflected on the passage of time in this sliver of the universe in front of me.

A.His mother requested him to do so.
B.The old dishwasher broke down.
C.He attempted to please his father.
D.The new dishwasher was extremely expensive.
5. What did the author think of dish-washing originally
A.It was a stress-reliever.
B.It was stressful.
C.It was tough.
D.It was a money-saver.
6. What does the underlined word “perplexing” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Offending.
B.Discouraging.
C.Puzzling.
D.Inspiring.
7. What can we learn about the author from the last two paragraphs
A.He regretted devoting too much time to study.
B.He decided to give up some of his goals.
C.He desired to move to a house with a larger yard.
D.He grew more sensitive to the beauty of nature.

In the summer of 2021, an unseasonal event took place. More than 100 miles of Florida’s coast around Tampa Bay became an oxygen-depleted zone containing dead fish along the nearby shoreline.
Much of the conversation around our climate crisis highlights the emission of greenhouse gases and their effect on warming, sea-level rise and ocean acidification. We hear little about the effect of climate change on oxygen levels, particularly in oceans and lakes. But water without adequate oxygen cannot support life. For the three billion people who depend on coastal fisheries for income, declining ocean oxygen levels are devastating.
As ocean and atmospheric scientists focus on climate, we believe that oceanic oxygen levels are the next big victim of global warming. To stop the situation from worsening, we need to expand our attention to include the dangerous state of oceanic oxygen levels — the life-support system of our planet. We need to accelerate ocean-based climate solutions that boost oxygen. Examples include nature-based solutions such as those discussed at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) held in Glasgow.
Enhanced monitoring of oxygen and the establishment of an oxygen-accounting system are a must. Putting oxygen into the climate story motivates us to do the work to understand the deep systemic changes happening in our complex atmospheric and oceanic systems. We celebrated the return of humpback whales in recent years to an increasingly clean New York Harbor and Hudson River. However, dead fish blocked the Hudson in the summer as warmer waters carried less oxygen.
Ecosystem changes connected to physical and chemical system-level data may point the way to new approaches to climate solutions. It includes an enhanced understanding of the life-support system of our planet. Roughly 40 percent of the world’s people depend on the ocean for their livelihoods. If we do not save marine life from oxygen starvation, we starve ourselves.
8. What is the result of less ocean oxygen according to the text
A.A rise in the coastal fisheries.
B.The warming of the atmosphere.
C.The emission of greenhouse gases.
D.An increase in deaths of sea animals.
9. What can we infer from Paragraph 3
A.Attention to oceans is necessary.
B.Global warming effects are serious.
C.Oceanic oxygen levels are dangerous.
D.Ways to boost oceanic oxygen are urgent.
10. Why does the author mention humpback whales in Paragraph 4
A.To bring in an oxygen-accounting system in climate.
B.To explain the urgency of oxygen starvation in waters.
C.To call for more attention to oxygen levels in atmosphere.
D.To show the achievements in reducing air pollution.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Save Marine Life
B.Make Oceans Safe
C.Let Oceans Breathe
D.Keep the Marine System

In a world that feels increasingly complex and uncontrollable, a revolutionary psychological approach has attracted millions. Known as the “Let Them” theory, popularized by Mel Robbins in 2024, it has since gone viral, gaining over 15 million views. The theory encourages a powerful form of acceptance, urging us to focus on our reactions and inner states rather than trying to control others or the outside, or what we call external world.
Adopting the “Let Them” method can bring several psychological benefits. Primarily, it lowers stress and anxiety by reducing the effort spent on trying to manage the uncontrollable. In relationships, this approach can lessen conflict and build mutual respect, as it supports personal autonomy and self-control. The core of the theory is self-improvement and personal choice, which leads to healthier and more balanced connections with others.
So, what happens in your mind when you practice “Let Them” First, you quickly reduce the internal struggle that comes from fighting against reality. Instead of thinking, “This shouldn’t be happening,” you start asking, “This is happening, so what should I do now ” or “What is the best way for me to respond to this situation ” This change in thinking calms the body’s stress response. In professional psychology, this is known as “radical acceptance,” a skill for tolerating suffering. Therapies based on acceptance can greatly decrease psychological stress and worry.
Furthermore, allowing others to have their autonomy can improve how relationships work. It reduces defensiveness and increases mutual respect. When you consciously give up trying to control others, you create space for them to change voluntarily. Most people value feeling trusted and respected in their relationships. This shift in perspective reduces feelings of being pressured, trapped, and annoyed. When individuals feel supported and empowered to make their own suitable decisions, they often feel closer and more open to others.
12. What does the “Let Them” theory encourage us to do
A.Concentrate on how to react.
B.Overlook the outer world.
C.Accept the increasing complexity.
D.Stay focused despite difficulties.
13. How does the application of “Let Them” benefit relationships
A.To limit personal autonomy.
B.To build mutual respect.
C.To push others to change.
D.To erase all negative feelings.
14. What is radical acceptance
A.Refusing suffering.
B.Strengthening stress response.
C.Accepting what has happened.
D.Discouraging hard realities.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To explain a popular psychological theory.
B.To persuade people to stop controlling others.
C.To explain how a theory became popular online.
D.To compare different methods of stress management.

My father grew up in Chicago and loved the local team Cubs his whole life. I loved my dad, so the Cubs ___21___ me too. When I went back home after school or work, I always watched the Cubs with him. Two decades after my father’s ___22___, every time I watch the Cubs on television, I think of him and ___23___ with him in my head about their game.

But that is exactly what makes it ideal for forming relationships. We had nothing to ___27___ as we watched them play, except for the satisfaction of enjoying the games together as father and son, which was much greater than it would have been, if either of us had enjoyed without the other. The Cubs were the “place” where we met to enjoy being connected.
Lots of sports fans have similar experiences. Sportswriters find that 42 percent of sports fans were “very pleased” with their family life, compared with less than a quarter of nonfans.
If your relationships with family are a little cold, you might be asking about too much usefulness in your activities. Maybe the solution is to develop a taste for baseball, or maybe instead for chess.

Two days before her school’s Christmas program, my nine-year-old daughter Charlotte proudly announced, “I’m singing solo ‘Silent Night’ “. That puzzled me. Charlotte loved to sing. She sang in the shower and the car and just about everywhere else, despite her struggles with high pitch. Now she could carry a tune a bit better than last year, but I didn’t think she’d improved enough yet to sing a solo. Reminding myself that all things are indeed possible in grade school, I chose not to question her confidence.
I soon learned that my two other daughters in 11th grade, Monica and Corina, were also to perform in a different Christmas program on the same night. They were skilled singers and piano players. This time, they were giving a piano performance that night, an hour later than their younger sister. The three girls practiced everyday at home, filling our room with singing, piano music and laughter. Sometimes the two teenagers would give Charlotte some tips on improving her pitch, and could even accompany her singing “Silent Night” on the piano in a very short time. Knowing them well-prepared, I looked forward to the Christmas programs this year.
The big day finally came, and I came to school to watch Charlotte’s performance with delight. However, things went wrong. Shortly after dropping her backstage, she found me in the hall, eyes filled with tears. Her teacher explained there had been a misunderstanding — Charlotte was not picked to sing a solo. Heartbroken, she asked to leave. Though upset, I focused on comforting her.
Teenagers notice everything. When we arrived at their auditorium earlier than scheduled, Monica and Corina quickly realized something was wrong. When I explained the situation, they showed sincere sympathy. “Come with us, Charlotte. You can see backstage and meet our friends.” The invitation beat any flavor of ice-cream, and Charlotte gladly accepted and went with them. I sat with the audience and waited, until the host announced my girls’ names.
Monica and Corina walked onto the stage, gesturing Charlotte to join them.

四、书信范文
Dear Manager,
I’m writing to recommend documentary videos for our school canteen at lunchtime.
Documentaries about nature, history and culture are great choices. They are peaceful and relaxing, which can ease our tired minds after morning classes. Besides, they offer rich knowledge and broaden our horizons without noisy plots. Unlike entertaining series, they won’t make us too excited to finish meals quickly.
I hope you can take my advice into consideration.
Sincerely,
Li Hua

Monica and Corina walked onto the stage, gesturing Charlotte to join them. Surprised yet nervous, Charlotte stepped up. The two elder sisters smiled and handed her a microphone. Together, the three sang Silent Night beautifully. Their warm voices touched every audience member, winning loud applause. Charlotte’s sadness disappeared completely, replaced by bright smiles.
I went to the backstage and found the three girls chatting happily. Charlotte told me she felt so warm and loved by her sisters. I realized true care lies in accompanying and sharing happiness with family. That Christmas night left us a precious memory of sisterly love.
