You had to be really unlucky to be on the China National Highway 110 on August 14, 2025. One of the longest traffic jams on record, trapping thousands of vehicles over more than 100 kilometers and lasting more than 10 days. Would it make you impatient I strongly suspect that even the calmest would answer with a resounding “yes”! And yet philosophers and poets alike sell patience as a “virtue (美德)”, implying that having it is always a good thing. To me, it’s far more useful to think about patience as something we do rather than something we have.
Consider first what it means to be impatient. We all know the feeling: fingers drumming the table, leg bouncing. But why does this frustrating feeling arise Most emotion researchers take it as a functionalist viewpoint. Our mind and body are trying to tell us to get moving, to find a way to bring the unpleasant delay to an end.
In a series of recent studies with more than 1,400 participants, we found that people were more impatient when the thing they were waiting for was very appealing — and when the wait itself was unappealing. Being delayed for something you hate, such as an unpleasant work event, is easier than a similar delay for a much-expected performance by your favorite band.
If impatience is an emotion, what is patience In technical terms, it’s a form of emotion regulation like reminding ourselves that the scary movie isn’t real. When we start to feel impatient, we can let that feeling spread — or we can regulate (调节) it. Are you waiting for weeks to find out if you have got that job Dive into your favorite hobby to distract yourself for a few hours.
There’s still a lot we don’t know about patience, including why some people seem to find it easier than others and how we can get better at it. Fortunately, those are simpler questions to answer when we reduce the challenge from virtue acquisition to emotion regulation.
Ultimately, it may seem like a sharp contrast to poetic picture of virtue, but I’ll take practical wisdom over virtue any day.
28. What is the author’s attitude to people’s impatience in traffic jams on the National Highway 110
A.Critical
B.Optimistic
C.Indifferent
D.Understanding
29. According to the text, which of the following situations would make people the most impatient
A.Being stuck in a traffic jam in a comfortable car.
B.Being delayed by bad weather on the way to work.
C.Waiting in a long queue for an expected football game.
D.Waiting for an important but unpleasant work meeting.
30. The author views patience as ________.
A.an acquired virtue
B.a behavior of regulating emotion
C.a form of releasing emotion
D.a born personality
31. What is the purpose of the text
A.To redefine patience.
B.To explain a virtue.
C.To introduce strategies.
D.To recognize impatience.

On a cool September evening, I found myself seated around a worn wooden table at a Dungan family’s home in Kyrgyzstan, surrounded by travelers from Spain, Canada, and Russia. The table was set with slices of watermelon as well as cucumber and tomato salads. Our hostess Mrs. Zhang then served us a bamboo basket of steaming jin momo — soft buns similar to Chinese baozi — while explaining how her ancestors had brought wheat growing techniques from northwestern China during the late 19th century. Soon the table was filled with dishes telling silent stories: cucumber salads carrying Gansu flavors and lagman noodles mixing Central Asian vegetables with Shaanxi hand-pulling techniques.
As people drank tea and talked in different languages. I gradually understood this gathering was more than a meal. The Spanish architect beside me was amazed at how food could preserve cultural codes across centuries and borders. The Canadian teacher noted that Mrs. Zhang’s kitchen — where Chinese chopping knives met Kyrgyz clay pots — mirrored today’s globalized world.
The scene reminds me of Lisa Kyung Gross’ research in New York. Her documentation of immigrant chefs shows food’s double magic: Spanish bakers reinvent date cookies by dipping them in Belgian chocolate, adding new charm and flavors to traditional food. As Gross poetically notes, every bite contains layers of history, yet remains open to new understandings.
Perhaps this food magic explains why UNESCO lists 38 food traditions as Intangible Cultural Heritage From Japanese seasonal philosophy to Italian pizza-making skills, these living traditions show how cooking practices maintain identities while encouraging dialogues. That night in Dungan House, the Russian software engineer’s laughter as he struggled with chopsticks perfectly conveyed the message — cultural exchange isn’t about perfection, but shared humanity.
32. What does Mrs. Zhang’s explanation of jin momo show
A.The mixture of cooking styles.
B.The spread of Chinese farming skills.
C.The friendship between two countries.
D.The development of traditional Chinese cuisine.
33. Which is the focus of Lisa Kyung Gross research
A.Heritage protection.
B.Home-based recipe.
C.Cultural shock.
D.Immigrant adaptation.
34. What can we learn from the Russian engineer’s experience
A.Laughter helps to overcome cultural shock.
B.Communication matters more than correct use.
C.Traditional table manners carry humanity code.
D.Cultural exchange requires perfect understanding.
35. What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To explain how UNESCO protects cultural heritage.
B.To discuss food as a bridge between different cultures.
C.To describe the cooking techniques of Dungan families.
D.To compare different food traditions in Asia and Europe

She got up early to be ready for the post. From the second floor of the flat, she could see the postman when he came down the street, and the little boy from the ground floor brought up her letters on rare occasions when anything came.
Today she was sure there would be something. Her daughter, Myra, wouldn’t forget her birthday, even if Myra seldom wrote at other times. Of course, Myra was busy. The old lady was proud of Myra, who was successful both in her company and family.
The old lady was eighty today. She had put on her best dress. Perhaps Myra might come. After all, eighty was a special birthday.
Even if Myra did not come, she would send a present. The old lady was sure of that. Two spots of color brightened her cheeks. She was excited-like a child. She would enjoy her day.
Mrs. Morison upstairs had brought a card and a bunch of flowers to her. Mrs. Grant downstairs had made a cake, and in the afternoon she was going down there to tea. Johnnie had brought up with a packet of sweets, and said he wouldn’t go out to play until the post had come. “I guess you’ll get lots of presents.” he said.
What would she like A pair of comfortable shoes perhaps. Or a new coat. A coat would be lovely. Blue is such a pretty color. Or a table lamp. Or a book, a travel book, with pictures. Or a little clock, with clear black numbers. So many lovely things.

六、读后续写范文
She stood by the window, watching. The street was quiet and no postman appeared for a long time. She paced back and forth restlessly, eyes fixed on the road ahead. Johnnie dropped by several times to comfort her, saying the postman might be delayed. Hours passed, and her excitement faded little by little. She sank into the sofa, feeling a sense of loss creeping over her. Deep down, she still hoped Myra would send a gift to celebrate her eightieth birthday.
Suddenly the doorbell rang, she thought it would be another postman who sent parcels. She hurried to open the door, only to find a delivery man holding a small envelope. Inside was a cheque from Myra with a short note, no warm words or lovely gifts she had imagined. Her heart sank heavily. Just then, Mrs. Grant knocked and invited her for tea with the homemade cake. Surrounded by neighbours’ kindness, she realized the true warmth didn’t only come from her daughter’s present.
