Last autumn, I volunteered at a remote forest reserve, hoping to escape the busy city life and reconnect with nature. I didn’t expect a brief encounter with a little fox to change my view of the wild world forever.
On a cold misty morning, I was patrolling the woodland trail when I caught sight of a small red fox. It was sitting quietly beside an old pine tree, staring at me with bright round eyes. Instead of running away immediately as most wild animals did, it tilted its head curiously, as if studying a stranger. I froze, holding my breath, afraid that any small movement would scare it off.
Slowly, I lowered my body and kept still. Minutes passed gently. To my surprise, the fox took a few careful steps toward me. Its fur shone softly in the weak sunlight filtering through the leaves. I could even notice the tiny white spots on its tail. It stopped just several meters away, watching me without fear. At that moment, all my worries and tiredness melted into the quietness of the forest.
Before long, a soft call came from the distant bushes. The fox turned its head, then glanced back at me once more. It waved its tail lightly and ran off into the woods, disappearing among the fallen leaves. I stood there for a long time, filled with warmth and amazement.
Nature is not merely a landscape we admire from afar. It is a world full of gentle lives. That short meeting taught me that respect and silence are the best bridges between humans and wild creatures. We live together on the same earth, and peaceful coexistence is the most precious gift we can share.

Scientists have long known that some dogs can learn the names of lots of toys. Now, a recent study shows that these dogs can even learn the names of new toys just by listening in while people talk about the toys — a skill that young children have, but most dogs do not.
Most dogs can be trained to follow simple commands like “come” or “sit”. But learning the names of things, called “label learning”, is harder. Most dogs struggle with it. Over the past 20 years, however, scientists have found a few dogs that can do it. These dogs can remember the names of many toys, sometimes even hundreds of them. They call these dogs “gifted word learners”. These dogs typically learn during play or training sessions with their owners, but some owners noticed their dogs responding to toy names overheard in daily conversations.
To test if these dogs can learn new words from overheard talk, Dr. Shany Dror and her team worked with 10 gifted word learners, mostly Border Collies. First, the scientists had owners teach the dogs two new toy names in the usual way — by talking directly to the dogs about the toy. Usually, it took the dogs about eight minutes spread over a few days to learn the names of the toys. When asked, the dogs could then fetch the correct toy from a pile of 11 with 80% accuracy.
In the second test, the scientists asked the dogs’ owners to talk about two other new toys with family members, repeating the toy names (e. g., “This is your armadillo”) without looking at or addressing the dogs. Days later, when asked to fetch these new toys, the dogs succeeded 100% of the time. In contrast, 10 non-gifted Border Collies failed to learn from the conversations.
This ability to learn by overhearing is similar to that of 18-month-old children. Researchers are still unsure why some dogs have this skill, as gifted word learners are extremely rare. Dr. Dror notes, “We’re always searching for more dogs to study.”
28. What is the typical way for “gifted word learners” to learn toy names
A.Overhearing family conversations.
B.Watching children learn new words.
C.Fetching toys from a pile of objects.
D.Doing interactive activities with owners.
29. What do we know about the first test in the study
A.It used overheard talk.
B.It achieved perfect accuracy.
C.It involved direct teaching.
D.It took eight minutes at a time.
30. What is Dr. Dror’s attitude towards finding more gifted word learners
A.Cautious.
B.Positive.
C.Dismissive.
D.Indifferent.
31. What can be the best title for the text
A.Train Your Dog to Learn Words by Heart
B.Border Collies: The Smartest Dog Species
C.Brainy Dogs Learn Words by Listening In
D.Gifted and Normal Dogs: Are There Differences

Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons — for example, economic reasons — why they should be preserved. So, let us assume (假设) that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed
In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own hometown of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not affect its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.
It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative and do not like change.
Although we have to respect people’s feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.
32. What does the author say about historical buildings in Paragraph 1
A.Some of them are not attractive.
B.Most of them are too expensive to preserve.
C.They are more pleasing than modern buildings.
D.They have nothing to do with the historic feel of an area.
33. Which of the following is true according to the author
A.We should reproduce the same old buildings.
B.In no way should buildings affect the surroundings.
C.Some old buildings have ruined the area they are in.
D.Nobody knows why people speak against new buildings.
34. By “move things forward” in the last paragraph, the author probably means ________.
A.destroy old buildings
B.put things in a different place
C.choose new architectural styles
D.respect people’s feelings for historical buildings
35. What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To explain why people dislike change.
B.To warn that we could end up living in caves.
C.To admit how new buildings have ruined their surroundings.
D.To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas.

One lovely weekend, my husband Max took me and our two-year-old daughter Ila for a picnic in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Also accompanying us was our ten-month-old Labrador (拉布拉多犬) D’Argo. He was a dog I picked up on a rainy night. Over the years, he had changed from a shy, frightened puppy into a gentle and loyal companion.
After our picnic, I safely fastened Ila into her car seat and waved D’Argo inside. But as I closed the door with a soft click, panic shot through me — D’Argo had accidentally stepped on the remote (遥控器), locking them both inside. Max hurried over, his face turning pale. “Where’s the key ” he asked anxiously. I pointed to the driver’s seat, where the only key, attached to the remote door lock control, was lying along with my purse.
April afternoons are warm, and the temperature inside a parked car rises quickly. In just a few minutes, Ila’s cheeks turned pink and sweaty. Her little hands held the seat belt tightly. D’Argo jumped restlessly from the front seat to the back, barking loudly as if he had been begging for help. “Let’s break it open!” Max said, prying (撬动) at the lock with a thick branch, but the door stayed shut. “It’s no use,” I whispered, heart sinking. “Call 911!”
Fifteen minutes later, the police car finally arrived. The officer tried to open the lock with a metal tool but failed. Soon, two more officers arrived, but they couldn’t unlock the door either.
Ila’s face was flushed and shiny. Drops of sweat rolled down her cheeks, and she started crying for me. I hit the window helplessly. Seeing this, D’Argo jumped to her side at once, rubbing his head against her small hand gently and licking her tears to make her feel better.

Dear Ms. Li,
I’m writing to tell you about my volunteer work of keeping order during breaks these days.
Every break, I stand in the hallway to remind classmates not to run or push each other. At first, some students ignored my words, but after I talked with them patiently, they began to behave well.
I’ve learned a lot from this activity. Maintaining public order needs everyone’s effort. I hope more classmates will take part in such volunteer jobs.
Sincerely,
Li Hua
六、读后续写范文
The officers finally suggested breaking the front driver’s window to get them out. Max nodded immediately, and one policeman took a heavy tool and struck the window hard. With a sharp crash, the glass broke into small pieces. The police reached inside and unlocked the door quickly. I rushed to the back seat and held my crying daughter tightly in my arms. D’Argo followed us out slowly, with tiny glass pieces stuck to his fur. He looked tired but kept glancing at Ila all the time.
I gratefully held D’Argo in my arms, and brushed the glass pieces off his body gently. He licked my hand softly as if comforting me. Without him staying beside Ila to calm her down, she might have been much more frightened in the hot car. This experience made me realize how loyal and caring D’Argo was. From that day on, I treat him as a true family member who would always protect our little girl no matter what danger comes.
