The Water Whistle (哨子)
Want to make your own instrument Let’s try this cool science experiment!
What you need:
A glass A straw A pair of scissors Water
Steps:
Cut the straw near its middle. Make sure the two parts stay connected so that
you can bend it 90 degrees at the cut.
Fill the glass with water.
Put one end of the straw into the water. Bend the straw 90 degrees at the cut
and blow into the other end.
Raise and lower the straw in the water.
What happens:
When you blow into the straw, it makes a sound — like a whistle. When you raise or lower the straw in the
water, the sound changes.
Why
The straw works like a simple wind instrument. When you blow into it, the air inside vibrates (震动) and
creates sound. By moving the straw up and down in the water, you change the length of the air column inside it.
Think of the air column as a spring (弹簧): the longer the spring is, the slower it vibrates and the lower the sound;
the shorter the spring is, the faster it vibrates and the higher the sound.

Imagine mountains covered with silver water, shining in the spring sun. Summer sees
the mountains turn bright green with growing rice. During autumn, these mountains are gold,
while winter blankets them with white snow. These are the colours of the Longji Rice
Terraces (梯田).
These terraces were built by the local Zhuang and Yao people. Starting in the Yuan Dynasty, work on the
terraces took hundreds of years and was finished in the early Qing Dynasty.
So why did these people work so hard to turn the whole mountains into terraces Firstly, there is little flat
land for farming. Building terraces allows them to grow more rice. Secondly, although the area gets plenty of rain,
the mountains are steep (陡峭的) and the soil is thin. The flat terraces help to catch the rainwater and prevent the
soil from being washed away.
To our surprise, the terraces show how people have worked in harmony with nature. The design is really
clever. Hundreds of waterways are connected with each other. During the rainy season, rainwater moves along
3
these waterways from the top of the mountains down to every terrace. The sun heats the water and turns it into
vapour. This creates clouds and then brings rain back to the terraces. These terraces also provide a perfect home
for birds and fish. Some of these animals eat insects that can harm the rice plants.
Modern technology could help produce more rice, but the traditional ways are still very important to the
local people. This knowledge is passed down through families, which means that new generations continue to use
ancient methods of farming to maintain the terraces. Today, the Longji Rice Terraces attract thousands of visitors
who come to admire this great wonder created by people and nature working together.
23.Which period shows when the Longji Rice Terraces were built
A.① B.② C.③ D.④
24.Why did Zhuang and Yao people build the Longji Rice Terraces
①To catch the birds and fish for food. ②To create more flat land for growing rice.
③To attract tourists and develop the economy. ④To prevent soil from being washed away by rain.

One windy morning, Mary and Dickon walked across the moor(荒野 ) toward the secret
garden. Dickon carried a small tool and a bag of seeds. Mary held the old key that unlocked the
hidden door. She had found it hid in the soil years ago.
When they entered, the garden looked gray and wild. Dead branches lay everywhere, and
weeds(杂草 ) had climbed up the stone walls. But Dickon knelt down. “Look, Mary,” he said
softly, “the roses are still alive. See these tiny green shoots ” Mary touched a small leaf and felt hopeful.
Suddenly, a strange sound came from behind the thick ivy(常春藤) on the far wall. It was not a bird or the
wind. It was a crying sound—soft, lonely, and weak, like a child who had been crying for a long time.
“That’s not a bird,” Mary whispered. “It’s Colin. He’s my cousin.”
Colin never went outside. Everyone in the large house believed he was too weak and would soon die. He lay
in bed all day, pale and thin, often crying. But Mary had met him secretly. She believed he could get stronger.
That afternoon, Mary took Dickon to meet Colin. Colin lay in bed. When he saw Dickon walk in—with a red
robin on his shoulder and a small mole (鼹鼠) in his jacket pocket—his eyes opened wide. “You go outside every
day ” Colin asked.
4
“Every morning,” Dickon said. “The moor is full of life. Baby sheep follow their mothers. Flowers are
waking up under the grass.”
“I’ve never seen a sheep,” Colin whispered. For the first time, he wanted to leave his room.
Mary looked at Dickon, then at Colin. “If you come to the secret garden,” she said, “you’ll see more than
baby sheep. You’ll see things grow. Maybe you can grow, too.”
That night, Colin did not cry. He lay in the dark, thinking: If Dickon can run on the moor, and Mary can dig
in the garden, why can’t I

An important choice I’ve made
Life is full of choices, I find that an important choice I’ve made is to keep practicing English every day, even
when I wanted to give up.
Last term, I did badly in an English test. I felt sad and thought about giving up. My mother told me that small
daily efforts matter. I chose to keep going. I learned ten words and read one short passage every day. It was hard,
but I followed the plan.
Now my English has improved a lot, and I enjoy learning it more than before. This choice taught me that a
small decision can lead to a big change. I am proud that I chose to work hard instead of giving up.
