Hans is a young German born after 1995, who is a big fan of Chinese culture. He has been learning traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) since 2016. Now he is studying for his master’s degree at Henan University of Chinese Medicine.
Hans came to Central China’s Henan Province in 2015, where a rich TCM culture can be enjoyed because Henan Province is the hometown of Zhang Zhongjing, the medical master of ancient China. After one year of learning the Chinese language, he started to learn Chinese medicine.

Studying TCM also changed Hans’ mind and lifestyle. He used to be addicted to electronic devices and stay up late every night, trapped in this fast-paced but unhealthy daily routine. But now, according to the Yin-Yang theory in TCM, he lives a balanced and peaceful life, practicing good habits as well as reading ancient books.

Like all big cities, Paris has a traffic problem: lots of cars, lots of traffic jams and lots of pollution from exhaust fumes (废气). So the city began a scheme (计划) to improve the situation.
Under the Velib project ('Velib' comes from vélo liberté, or 'bicycle freedom') people can take a bicycle, use it for as long as they want, and then leave it at the same or another bicycle station. The first half-hour on the bike is free, but if you don't return it after 30 minutes, you have to pay. But it's only ?1 a day or ?29 a year! The bicycles are heavy (25 kg), and they are all grey and have baskets. There are about 20,000 of them in the city, and around 1,450 bicycle stations. So there are a lot more Velib stations than the 298 subway stations!
Paris is not the first city to have a project like this. But not everybody thinks it's a great idea. One Parisian said, "These bicycles are only for short journeys. If people want to travel across the city, they won't use a bicycle — they'll still use their cars."
A city spokesman said, 'The bicycle project won't solve all our traffic problems, of course. But it might help reduce air pollution. Traffic, together with factory fumes, is a big problem. There aren't any simple answers to traffic problems and pollution in cities. But unless we do something now, there will be more traffic jams and temperatures will continue to rise, so the problems in our environment will get worse. The bikes might help people to lead a healthier life, too.'
28. What can we learn about the Velib scheme
A.Its bikes have no baskets.
B.Its bikes are light and colorful.
C.It aims to make traveling easier.
D.It owns more stations than the subway.
29. If you use a Velib for 1 hour, you should pay _______.
A.?l
B.?30
C.?29
D.no money
30. Why do some people disagree with the Velib scheme
A.The cost is rather high.
B.It's hard to find a Velib station.
C.It's not suitable for a long journey.
D.The distance between two Velib stations is long.
31. What's the city spokesman's attitude towards the bicycle scheme
A.Doubtful.
B.Positive.
C.Uncaring.
D.Worried.

Reason can’t fully explain why people keep reaching for their phones, even when they know nothing important is likely to happen. A new study suggests a biological explanation for why certain people find it especially hard to put their phones down — it involves dopamine, the brain’s “reward” chemical.
Each time we check a message or see a new “like”, our brain receives a tiny burst of dopamine. Over time, some people’s brains become highly sensitive to these small rewards and start to “ask” for them more frequently. In these people, researchers report, there appear to be more dopamine-releasing cells in certain brain areas — meaning that their brains may release dopamine more easily in response to digital signals, keeping them dependent on checking their phones.
Dr. Karen Liu, a neuroscientist at Northbridge University, studied whether the brains of heavy phone users differed in any way from those who used their phones less. She and her team focused on a part of the brain linked to habit-forming behavior. Brain scans showed that frequent phone checkers had stronger connections between this area and the regions that process visual notifications, such as screen lights and message icons. “Their brains seem to treat a phone notification as something that deserves immediate attention,” Liu says.
“It’s an important piece of the puzzle in understanding modern habits,” says Dr. Miguel Torres, a psychiatrist who treats patients with technology-related problems. Torres believes that recognizing the brain’s role in these behaviors may reduce the shame some people feel about their phone use and encourage them to seek help. He also suggests that future treatments might include both counseling and simple changes in phone design, such as limiting notifications, to help lower the brain’s repeated dopamine response.
32. What plays the most important role in people’s addiction
A.A new “like”.
B.A fancy phone.
C.A tiny chemical.
D.A brain area.
33. What did Liu’s study mainly focus on
A.Number of apps.
B.Brain areas for habits & notifications.
C.Eye damage from phones.
D.Different phone screens.
34. According to Torres, how might future treatments help heavy phone users
A.Block smartphones completely.
B.Replace phones with other devices.
C.Change phone settings.
D.Delete all social media.
35. What is the text mainly about
A.Shame over phone use.
B.Bright screens attracting users.
C.Preventing teens’ phone use at school.
D.Brain explanation for phone checking.

Lily was a bright and energetic girl with a heart full of dreams. She lived in a small and comfort town where everyone knew each other. One sunny morning, Lily’s teacher announced a school talent show. The news excited Lily immediately, as she had always loved singing and dreamed of performing on stage.
Without hesitation, Lily signed up for the show. She chose her favourite song and started practising right away. Every day after school, she would go to the park and sing her heart out, imagining the big stage and the cheering audience. However, as the days passed, Lily faced a big problem. She found it difficult to reach some of the high notes in the song. No matter how hard she tried, her voice just wouldn’t cooperate.
Lily started to feel discouraged. She thought about giving up and withdrawing from the talent show. But deep inside, she knew that giving up was not an option. She remembered the words her father always told her, “When life gives you challenges, face them with courage and never give up.”
Determined to overcome the obstacle, Lily decided to ask for help. She went to her music teacher, Mrs. Brown, and explained her problem. Mrs. Brown was very kind and patient. She listened to Lily sing and then gave her some useful tips on how to control her voice and reach the high notes. She also encouraged Lily to practise regularly and believe in herself.
With Mrs. Brown’s guidance, Lily practised even harder. She spent hours every day working on those difficult notes. Sometimes she felt tired and depressed, but she always reminded herself of her dream. Finally, the day of the talent show arrived. Lily was nervous but excited. As she stepped onto the stage and saw the audience looking at her expectantly, her heart raced. But as soon as the music started, she took a deep breath and began to sing.

Dear Mr. Smith,
I’m writing to tell you my choice for English Week activities. I prefer the English Song Competition.
First, singing English songs helps us memorize words and learn natural pronunciation easily. Besides, it’s more relaxing and attractive for most students than boring spelling contests. Many classmates are eager to take part and show themselves.
I believe this activity will make English Week lively and meaningful. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

Lily poured her heart and soul into the song. She controlled her voice perfectly and hit all the tricky high notes smoothly. All her daily hard practice paid off. The whole hall fell silent, only her clear and warm voice echoing around the stage. When the song came to an end, loud warm applause burst out immediately. Lily bowed politely, big tears of joy rolling down her cheeks.
After the show, Lily’s friends and teachers crowded around her. They praised her wonderful performance and said they were deeply moved by her beautiful singing. Mrs. Brown smiled and told Lily that her persistence made the success. Lily realized that as long as she stuck to her dream and kept trying, all difficulties would be overcome. This unforgettable experience taught her never to fear challenges in life.
