The National Theatre, London, has announced an exciting lineup for its 2026season, bringing a dynamic mix of new productions, timeless classics, and international collaborations.
The theatre will open the year with Emerald City, originally created by Australian playwright David Williamson in 1987. Director Thomas Cuisse says, “The surface of society might change, but human nature doesn’t. This play offers a deep exploration of an artist’s inner struggle which will touch audiences everywhere.”
Thunderstorm, written by Cao Yu and one of the most iconic Chinese plays of the 20th century, will be staged in June. It is part of the theatre’s ongoing effort to promote classic Chinese theatrical works.
The summer will also bring Romeo and Juliet to a small theatre, with a modern twist. The theatre’s young artists reimagine Shakespeare’s classic through a modern lens, adding youthful energy.
In addition, the year will see the return of Hamlet in August and The Daffodils in September. The latter will be presented in grand poetic style, exploring the intersection of art, poetry and history.
This year, the theatre continues to increase collaboration with major cultural hubs. “We’re working to build stronger relationships with the international community,” says Rufus Norris, Artistic Director. The first such collaboration will be Farewell My Concubine, co-produced with Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre, which will be streamed globally online.
In 2026, the theatre will continue to engage younger audiences and expand its public cultural services through programs like “youth blossoms”, which allows university students to create and stage their own work. Moreover, the theatre is embracing technology to reach a broader audience by adapting several productions into film and digital formats, allowing more people to experience the theatre’s performances online.

Drama education is often seen as a distraction. Many people believe that taking part in school theater productions or drama classes takes time away from subjects like math and science. This view is understandable, but it ignores the powerful role that theater arts can play in a student’s personal and academic growth.
Taking part in drama classes and school plays can improve emotional intelligence, build confidence, and make school life more enjoyable. In the long run, these experiences help prepare students for academic success.
I used to be a shy loner in school, but joining a drama club changed everything. Through playful drama games and acting out scenes, I found a supportive group of peers and began to thrive. Drama taught me to view life more playfully, reducing my self-consciousness and opening me up to others’ stories. This newfound confidence translated into better performance in school, as well as improved social skills that made me more outgoing and open in interviews and work settings.
At university, I studied English and Drama, further developing my skills through theater productions. These experiences not only enriched my education but also gave me essential people skills. As a student ambassador, I used these skills to lead drama workshops, demonstrating the practical applications of drama in real-world settings.
Later, I had the opportunity to teach English through drama to children in Beijing. Writing and directing shows based on traditional Chinese tales allowed students to practice English in a fun and engaging way. More importantly, these activities gave them the confidence to speak publicly in a second language.
Though some students resisted at first, seeing drama as a distraction from their studies, I truly believe that the confidence and interpersonal skills gained from drama are very important for success. Drama encourages creativity, adaptability and empathy — key qualities in today’s globalized world.
In conclusion, drama is more than just an extracurricular activity; it is a powerful tool for personal and academic growth. By promoting confidence and communication skills, drama prepares students to deal with diverse environments and connect with people from all walks of life. Embracing the arts in education can truly make a difference in shaping well-rounded, successful people.

A.A habit of criticizing oneself.
B.Worry about how others see you.
C.The ability to control one’s feelings.
D.A strong interest in one’s own stories.
6. Why does the author mention teaching drama to children in Beijing
A.To show drama’s practical value in learning.
B.To prove the rising popularity of drama.

D.To suggest drama works best for language learners.
7. What can be concluded from the last paragraph

As we mark the 34th World Water Day on March 22, the global water situation has become more serious than ever before. In January, a report from the United Nations University (UNU) said that we have entered an era of "water bankruptcy".
While the term “water crisis” suggests temporary damage to water resources, “water bankruptcy” describes a far worse situation. It means glaciers, wetlands and underground water on Earth have been permanently damaged and can never return to their original state.
The damage is widespread and alarming: Around 2.2 billion people do not have safe drinking water, and about three out of four people live in countries where water sources are unsafe, according to the report. Some major rivers in the world cannot reach the sea for parts of the year.
The report points out that water bankruptcy is not only a water problem, but also a matter of fairness. In regions that lack water, women and girls usually take more responsibility for collecting and managing water, but have no voice in deciding how water is used or managed. The theme of this year's World Water Day, “Water and Gender”, hopes to draw attention to this inequality and include more women in decisions about its use or management.
Also, the report notes that water bankruptcy is not just a problem affecting one part of the world. Countries and regions around the world are connected through trade and food supply. Agriculture uses most of the world's water. When one place runs out of water, it can lead to food shortages in other countries and regions.
So what should we do to deal with water bankruptcy The report suggests that the priority is no longer to “get back to normal”, but to recognize and adapt to the current state of the water problem, prevent further damage, change development models that use too much water and help people who are most affected.
“Declaring bankruptcy does not mean giving up,” lead author of the report, Kaveh Madani, also the director of the UNU’s Institute for Water, Environment and Health, said when the report was published. “It means facing the truth and making a fresh start. The longer we wait, the deeper the problem becomes.”
8. What does the underlined word “permanently” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Secretly. B.Forever. C.Mostly. D.Soon.
9. What unfair situation does the report highlight about water bankruptcy
A.Rich countries use more water.
B.Farmers pay higher prices for water.
C.Women lack decision-making power.
D.Children cannot access safe water.
10. How does water bankruptcy affect the whole world, according to the report
A.It affects global food supply chains.
B.It gradually reduces the world's population.
C.It allows some countries to control trade rules.
D.It leads to water wars between nations.
11. What does the report suggest as the priority for dealing with water bankruptcy
A.Trying to return everything to normal quickly.
B.Stopping activities that use large amounts of water.
C.Focusing on helping people in developing countries.
D.Accepting the situation and preventing further harm.

When you go out with friends, what do you usually talk about most: who had a falling out with whom, or who got a weird hairstyle You may not know it, but these chats are known by another name: “gossip”.
A recent study conducted by the University of California, Riverside in the US shows that people in modern societies spend about an hour a day gossiping. But why does gossip make up so much of our conversations
Humans are a social species that thrives today because of cooperation. But for our ancestors, social relationships did more than help them thrive - they were essential for survival, noted Psychology Today. Gossip was a key way to share information. Dangerous animals, rival groups and important resources... Lacking this information could be fatal in the past. Besides, experts believe that gossip has long played an important role in the social interactions of our ancestors, bringing them closer together.
Psychologist Robin Dunbar at the University of Oxford, UK, argues that gossip in humans serves the same function as grooming in other primates, helping comfort each other and make their relationships stronger.
This social function still works well in modern life. Gossip helps you learn who to trust and who to avoid, enforcing group rules. For example, complaints about people who put smelly banana peels in the trash are likely to get back to them and let them know that such behavior is not OK.
Besides, being the target of gossip is not always a bad thing. Psychologist Elena Martinescu, then at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, and her colleagues found that targets of positive gossip experienced positive emotions such as pride, while negative gossip was sometimes helpful by inspiring efforts to correct bad behavior.
“The good side is that you may become more aware of how you’re perceived by others. You may adjust your behavior accordingly,” said Rice University psychologist Sun Tianjun. “But if people are bad-mouthing about you, they can harm your reputation, your career prospects and your mental health.”
12. What was the main reason that our ancestors gossiped
A.To tell friends from rivals.
B.To improve language skills.
C.To make each other happy.
D.To share key survival information.
13. What does the example of complaining about smelly banana peels show
A.Gossip hurts people’s feelings.
B.Gossip helps maintain rules.
C.Gossip strengthens social ties.
D.Gossip spreads negative feelings.
14. What does Sun suggest about being the target of gossip
A.It’s always harmful. B.It has mixed effects. C.It should be ignored. D.It proves one’s importance.
15. What is the article mainly about
A.The roles of gossip in life.
B.Ways to start gossip.
C.The history of human gossip.
D.Studies on social communication.

In the back of my closet is a small box that has followed me to every new address. It’s the first thing I find a place for as the moving truck pulls away. The only remaining contents in it are dozens of notes in my mother’s tidy writing. My mother, who put her business degree to use running a small company with my father, while raising me, was always prepared and always gave me abundant love. By day she made marketing slogans and distribution strategies. By night: bubble baths and bedtime stories. She and I had the same February birthday. Each year my parents arranged wonderful parties.
When I was 3, she learned she had advanced breast cancer and immediately began to prepare by rescarching every available treatment. Each day, she would sit for hours at our dining table, her straight dark hair tied back, surrounded by piles of paper, studying, technical paragraphs.
When I was 7, the materials on the dining table began to change. Wrapping (包装) paper and ribbons (丝带) took the place of her highlighted pages. Paper creased (折) under her fingers. Knots (蝴蝶结) came together with a tiny creak. She had begun making a gift box for me.
Inside, she packed presents and letters for the milestones of my life she would miss—graduation, wedding, and every birthday until the age of 30. My mother died 10 days before our shared birthday. That morning, when I turned 12 and she would have turned 49, I woke up early and opened the box as my mother had shown me.
Neat rows of brightly wrapped presents glowed like the spring tulips (郁金香) that were just coming up in the front yard. In the package marked “12th Birthday”, I found a little ring with an amethyst (紫水晶) at its center. A white card curling around the present read: “I always wanted a birthstone ring when I was a little girl. I hope you like it, too. Happy birthday, darling girl! Love, your Mommy.”
On the morning of my high school graduation, I walked to the box.

Today I hit 31, and I sat in my room, holding the nearly empty box.

On the morning of my high school graduation, I walked to the box. I found a thick envelope labeled “Graduation”. I opened it slowly, seeing a beautiful notebook and a letter. Mom wrote how proud she was of me and wished me a bright future. Tears rolled down my face as I felt her warm love around me.
Today I hit 31, and I sat in my room, holding the nearly empty box. All birthday gifts before 30 had been opened. The box only kept her countless soft letters. Whenever I feel upset, I read them. Though Mom left me early, her love stays with me forever and guides me through every hard time in life.
