Throughout history, there have been sculptors prized for their willingness to push the boundaries. Without their contributions, it would be difficult to imagine visual art as we now know it. Here are several pioneers.
Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598—1680)
As a master of materials, Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini is known for his astonishing ability to create movement and bring forth emotion with his work. In his masterpiece, Pluto and Proserpina, the rough and cold stone has been turned into flesh that looks so real and soft that you just want to reach out and touch it.
Henry Moore (1898—1986)
Known for his abstract public sculpture, British artist Henry Moore’s works often focus on the theme of mother and child, who usually sit or lie in a relaxed way, with their bodies leaning backwards. Moore’s figures are often composed of multiple pieces, yet his clean lines allow viewers to effectively see the figures within the abstract form. Such features are very obvious in his masterpiece Mother and Child.
Louise Bourgeois (1911—2010)
Most well-known for her public art, French-American sculptor Louise Bourgeois rose to international fame in 1982 after the Museum of Modern Art held her first exhibit. By this time, she was already in her 70s. Drawing from her own life experience, her sculptures often explore themes of family and death.
In her representative work, Maman, Bourgeois has used a spider to stand for her mother, who died when she was a child, to show the mother’s strength and protection over her family.

A daughter complained to her father about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know if she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved a new one arose.
Her father, a cook, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each pot on a high fire. Soon the pots came to the boil. In one he placed carrots, in the second he placed eggs, and in the last he placed ground coffee beans. He let them sit and boil, without saying a word.
The daughter sucked her teeth and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. In about twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then he ladled (舀) the coffee out and placed it in a mug. Turning to her, he asked, “Darling, what do you see ”
“Carrots, eggs, and coffee, ” she replied.
He brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. She smiled, as she tasted its rich aroma.
“What does it mean, father ” she humbly asked.
He explained that each of them had faced the same adversity, boiling water, but each reacted differently. The carrot had been strong, hard, and unrelenting, but after being subjected to the boiling water, it became softened and weak. The egg had been fragile, and its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened.
The ground coffee beans were unique. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.
“Which are you ” he asked his daughter.
4. Why did the daughter complain to her father
A. She found life was extremely cruel to her.
B. She found that she was at a loss in her life.
C. She was tired of fighting and struggling with others.

C. To give her some inspiration.
D. To carry out an experiment with her.
6. What can be inferred from the text
A. The father seemed to be in favour of the egg most.
B. The carrot was likely to be the daughter’s favourite.
C. The three things all stood the test of the boiling water.
D. The ground coffee beans chose to affect their surroundings.
7. Which is the best title for the text
A. A Vivid Lesson
B. A Best Choice

Most of us know that eating too much sugar isn’t good for us. Because of a close connection between its consumption and health dangers like obesity, fatty liver disease, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer, sugar is high on the lists of bad habits worth giving up.
It turns out that reducing sugar intake (摄入) not only helps you avoid the harm of overconsumption, it can also bring surprising results you won’t have to wait long to benefit from. “These include improved moods, skin health, dental hygiene, cognitive function, and even athletic performance, ” says Amy Goodson, a nutritionist and registered dietitian.
The first thing to understand is that not all sugar is bad for you because there’s a big difference between natural sugars and added sugars.
Natural sugars like glucose in bread, fructose in fruit and many vegetables, and lactose in milk are natural. They not only provide energy but also offer sweetness to encourage us to eat the foods that contain something important for our health.
Added sugars are what are introduced to foods or drinks during processing, cooking, or at the table. There are various added sugars, which are added, most commonly, to sweeten or improve the taste of often unhealthy and over-processed foods. Worse, foods with added sugars don’t provide meaningful amounts of nutrition.
The harm connected with eating or drinking too many added sugars is big and includes an increased risk of developing autoimmune disorders such as Crohn’s disease and higher blood pressure, and an increased risk of different cancers. A BMC Medicine study also shows that even a five percent increase in added sugars comes with a six percent higher risk of heart disease and a ten percent higher risk of stroke.
“Such harm occurs in part, because any consumed sugar that isn’t used for energy is stored as fat, which results in increased weight gain, leading to diabetes, obesity, and related bad results, ” says Elaine Hon, a clinical dietitian and education specialist at Stanford Health Care.
8. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. Results of overconsumption.
B. Possible sugar-connected problems.
C. Benefits of eating less sugar.
D. Tips on how to reduce sugar intake.
9. What does the text say about natural sugars
A. They help us eat more healthy foods.
B. They should be consumed properly.
C. They provide little energy for bodies.
D. They are always in processed foods.
10. What do the numbers in paragraph 6 show
A. Giving up sugar is a must.
B. Added sugars are harmful.
C. A balanced diet is important.
D. The study is unbelievable.
11. What does Elaine Hon try to do in the last paragraph
A. Call for an action.
B. Raise some questions.
C. Give an explanation.
D. Offer practical advice.

With the fast growth of artificial intelligence (AI) , Chinese tech company DeepSeek has become a leader in educational innovation. Their newest product, DeepSeek-R1, uses smart computer systems to offer custom study plans for learners globally. By mixing different machine learning techniques, this tool helps students improve in ways that suit their unique needs.
Traditional AI tools often depend on fixed answers stored in their systems, but DeepSeek-R1 works differently. It applies a method called reinforcement learning, which mimics how humans think and learn from mistakes. Imagine a student facing a difficult algebra problem. Instead of simply giving the correct answer, the AI acts like a thoughtful teacher—it explains the problem-solving process step by step, points out where errors might occur, and asks questions to develop independent thinking skills.
The technology serves purposes beyond school subjects. When used for language practice, it listens to students’ speech through microphones, checks pronunciation accuracy instantly, and offers real-time feedback. Teachers also benefit greatly: The AI can design class activities matching official learning requirements, forecast which topics students may find challenging by analysing past performance records, and even create special tests that automatically become harder or easier based on each learner’s ability. This “smart testing” system saves educators time while keeping students appropriately challenged.
Yet some concerns exist. Education experts worry that depending too much on AI could make classrooms less interactive. DeepSeek’s team responds by clearly stating their tool is designed to support, not take over, human teachers. Researcher Dr Li explains, “We want machines to handle routine work like grading papers, so teachers can spend more energy on creative teaching methods and building students’ imagination. ”
Future plans for DeepSeek-R1 include adding virtual reality (VR) functions. Students might soon “walk through” ancient cities during history lessons or “enter” human cells to study biology in 3D simulated environments. Although discussions about whether AI should play such a big role in education continue, its impact is undeniable. These intelligent systems are changing learning methods worldwide, proving that technology works best when combined with human guidance. As classrooms evolve, tools like DeepSeek-R1 remind us that real progress lies not in choosing between machines and people, but in making them work together wisely.
12. What function does DeepSeek-R1 provide in language learning
A. Generate random vocabulary lists.
B. Provide immediate pronunciation corrections.
C. Replace human language instructors.
D. Focus solely on grammar drills.
13. How does DeepSeek-R1’s “smart testing” system adapt to students
A. By randomly increasing the number of test questions.
B. Requiring teachers to manually set difficulty levels.
C. Repeating the same questions until students memorise answers.
D. By automatically adjusting difficulty based on individual ability.
14. What does Dr Li imply about DeepSeek-R1’s role in education
A. It will fully replace human teachers in the future.
B. It prioritises automating all teaching processes.
C. It aims to help teachers focus on innovative tasks.
D. It increases students’ dependence on pre-programmed answers.
15. Which is the best title for the passage
A. The Partnership of AI and Humans in Education
B. AI’s Ethical Risks in Education
C. Reinforcement Learning in China
D. VR: The Future of Classrooms

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sarah, usually energetic before races, sat weakly on the bench. She looked pale. A stomach illness had hit her family, and she was still sick.
Coach Davis stood beside her. "Sarah, can you run the anchor leg (最后一棒) tomorrow It's the most important job, but you are sick. " The anchor leg runner finishes the race, and Sarah was their fastest runner.
Sarah breathed hard. "I. . . I have to, Coach. The team needs me. " But her voice shook, and sweat shone on her forehead.
Nearby, Maya watched, her hands tight. She ran the third leg well but wasn't the fastest. Seeing Sarah so sick worried her. What if Sarah got worse
In the locker room after practice, Maya sat next to Sarah. "Hey, " she said gently, "how are you really feeling "
Sarah looked down at her shaking hands. "Not great, " she admitted. "But I can't let everyone down. The team is counting on me. "
Maya took a deep breath. "I know you want to help, but what if running makes you worse Maybe. . . maybe someone else should run the anchor leg this time "
Sarah's eyes were filled with tears, "But who It has to be someone fast. "
"I could try, " Maya offered quietly. "I've been practicing hard. And Coach could help me prepare. "
Sarah stared at her, "You'd really do that "
Maya nodded firmly, "Of course! We're teammates. That's what teammates do — we help each other when we need it most. "
Coach Davis, who had been listening nearby, walked over. "Sarah, Maya makes a good point. Running while sick could hurt your health and the team's chances. Sometimes the bravest thing is knowing when to step back. Don't worry, the backup will take Maya's place. "
Sarah wiped her eyes. It was the hardest decision she'd ever made.
"You're right, " she finally said, her voice thick with emotion. "Maya, I trust you. You'll be a great anchor leg. " Maya laughed and hugged her friend. "I'll run like you're right beside me!"

六、写作第二节 读后续写范文
The big race came the next day. Sarah stood on the sidelines, cheering louder than anyone. When Maya got the baton for the final leg, Sarah screamed, "Go, Maya! You've got this!" Maya ran with all her heart, remembering Sarah's trust in her. They finished third — not first, but with their best time all season! After the race, Sarah ran to hug Maya. "You are amazing!" she said, her eyes shining. "I'm so proud of you!"
Maya smiled, "I wouldn't have done it without your trust. " Sarah realized then that true teamwork wasn't just about running your fastest — it was about knowing when to pass the position. She might not have run the race, but she'd helped win it in a different way. Coach Davis put a hand on each girl's shoulder, "Today you both showed what real champions are made of — courage, trust, and putting the team first. That's worth more than any trophy. "
