Meatopia

In today’s world, it can feel difficult to concentrate when your smartphone buzzes (嗡嗡响) every minute or two with reminders about updates, messages and much more. How can anyone get through a 500-page book when our brain is addicted to bite-sized content
Gloria Mark, professor at the University of California, has spent much of her career analysing how this affects us. She has used sensors to track attention duration on screens. When the studies started, in 2004, screen attention duration was about two-and-a-half minutes, but recently, has dropped to 47 seconds.
According to Prof Mark, there were “a lot of things” that had made people more distracted. “When you switch your attention duration so rapidly, there are more errors. It takes longer to do any task and people get more stressed.” Aside from making us perform tasks less effectively, the ease with which we get distracted by one thing or another on the internet also means that we can waste time that could be spent on activities considered more worthwhile.
People who have attention disorder tend to have less grey matter in brain’s parietal cortex (顶叶皮层), highlighted Nilli Lavie, professor of psychology and brain sciences at University College London. “We see greater grey matter volume in certain regions of the brain for people with a better attentional capacity,” Prof Lavie said.
The good news is that while research has indicated that in today’s world we switch our attention more often than in the past, this change is not thought to have become hard-wired in our brains. “The solution is simple: first, decide to focus, then use strategies to remove distractions,” Prof Lavie said.
Related to this, one strategy is to set an alarm that will go off after, for example, 20 minutes. And Prof Mark advises people to look ahead to the end of the day and to consider how they might spend time then, such as relaxing on the sofa after completing their work. “I want to feel accomplished because I’ve done my work,” she said. “That can help people stay on track.”
24. What is the main problem described in paragraph 1
A.People find it a struggle to focus.
B.Bite-sized contents are addictive.
C.Long passages are outdated.
D.Smartphones often disturb people.
25. What can we know about the online distractions
A.They cause permanent changes to human brain.
B.They have similar influences on different people.
C.They increase the possibility for people to make errors.
D.They offer people convenience to deal with various affairs.
26. What does Prof. Mark advise in the last paragraph
A.Set frequent alarms to take short breaks.
B.Create a flexible timetable to work efficiently.
C.Visualize after-work leisure time to keep daily focus.
D.Seek a relaxing environment to minimize distractions.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Save Your Brain to Stay Relaxed
B.Can We Reclaim Our Lost Focus
C.Why Are We Losing Concentration
D.Bite-sized Reading Ruined Our Brains
C
If a stranger knocked on your door asking for using your phone, would you help How about lending them five dollars for the bus, if they said they’d return and pay you back
Nowadays, many people find it hard to trust strangers. A recent study found that our ability to trust strangers may be more than just a social or psychological characteristic — it could be rooted in our DNA. This is important, as it turns out that trusting people might actually live longer and healthier lives compared to more skeptical (怀疑的) people.
Two main theories have appeared to explain why some people are more trusting than others. One suggests trust is a stable characteristic shaped by early life experiences. The other thinks it’s influenced by a person’s ongoing evaluation of the social environment. We can easily imagine that the answer to the question “Would you say that most people can be trusted ” would depend on whether you’d been robbed the day before or if you’d had your missing wallet returned.
This is where the recent research comes in. A professor of Lund University, Edgerton and his coworkers have been doing research about trust. In their most recent study, involving 33,882 Danish blood donors, they found a single gene (基因) — PLPP4, strongly associated with the personality of trusting others, and that the PLPP4 gene explained 6% of the difference in social trust within the study population. If you take two people who have similar education and life experiences, this gene alone could account for 6% of the difference in how much they trust others.
They believe that the PLPP4 gene may somehow soften our “fight-or-flight” survival response. If our fight-or-flight system is less strong when we meet new people, it makes sense that trusting others could have huge health benefits. Indeed, if trusting others acts as something against stress, it may lower the risk of cardiovascular (心血管的) disease.
As people continue to uncover the mysteries of trust, one thing is clear: understanding its genetic roots may hold the key to developing healthier communities in the world.
28. What might affect people’s trust levels according to the two main theories
A.Childhood habits.
B.Personal abilities.
C.Social experiences.
D.Communication skills.
29. What does the recent study focus on
A.The mental cause of trust.
B.The ways to develop survival ability.
C.The characteristics of different genes.
D.The connection between trust and a gene.
30. What does the passage say about trusting others
A.It could bring health benefits.
B.It reduces the strong stress in work.
C.It helps to develop the world faster.
D.It causes quicker survival response.
31. What can be inferred from the passage
A.The ability to trust others relates to a single gene.
B.How trusting you are frees people from disease.
C.Your understanding of gene accounts for developed communities.
D.The PLPP4 gene lays the foundation of survival response.
D
Many people are told that certain activities are out of the question for them, but a new invention proves that where there is a will, there is a way.
Dr. Zacharias Vamvakousis has come up with a creative way to improve the quality of life for countless people through the power of music. His invention is called EyeHarp, which enables individuals to make music using their gaze (注视) instead of their hands.
“EyeHarp is the first musical application that allows people with disabilities to play music with eyes or head movements,” Zacharias explains. “Using an eye tracker, you can make melodies by looking at the notes on the screen.”
EyeHarp uses the same type of digital eye-tracking technology used in some computer games. But instead of using it to aim weapons at digital opponents, EyeHarp uses it to track your eyes as they stay on different musical notes on a colorful circle on your computer screen.
The application allows you to play three to four notes every second. However, users have to be careful not to move their eyes too quickly from one musical note to the next. So, much like any other instrument, playing a tune takes practice and concentration.
Zacharias was inspired to create the magical application after a musician friend was badly hurt in a motorcycle accident. His friend was worried he’d never be able to play his guitar again, so Zacharias decided to find a new way to make music available to him. While his friend didn’t end up needing EyeHarp, Zacharias was on a mission to help others who thought music was forever lost to them. These are people who are so disabled that they don’t have the opportunity to do many things and learning music through EyeHarp gives them happiness, the purpose and the opportunity to play music.
Zacharias agreed, saying that music builds social connections and raises self-esteem. He’s currently training music teachers to use EyeHarp so they can reach even more people with disabilities. This invention has the potential for changing so many lives. Hundreds of people with disabilities have used EyeHarp.
“There wasn’t any instrument they could play. But now, they’re able to make their own music,” says Zacharias. “I hope it will light up the lives of more people like them.”
32. What is EyeHarp
A.A musical instrument played with disabled minds.
B.A device that helps people play music with their eyes.
C.A musical game using eye-tracking technology.
D.A medical tool for improving ones’eyesight.
33. For what reason did Zacharias create the appliance
A.His love for music and technology.
B.A need for a new form of musical therapy.
C.A desire to help his musician friend.
D.A sympathy towards people with disabilities.
34. How does EyeHarp work according to the passage
A.By tracking the movement of players’ hands.
B.By detecting the sound of a music note.
C.By following the stay of the gaze on the screen.
D.By recognizing the face of a disabled user.
35. What can we infer about EyeHarp from the passage
A.It is very difficult to play.
B.It can be used by anyone easily.
C.It has limited musical notes.
D.It brings hope to many disabled people.

I had been swimming competitively for five years but after such a long time, I was ready to quit. I was often the only African American at the swimming competitions and our team couldn’t afford good uniforms. However, my number-one reason for wanting to quit was that I kept receiving “Honorable Mentions (荣誉奖)”. Any athlete knows that you don’t want to have a shelf full of “Honorable Mentions”, which you get just because you showed up.
One summer’s day, the day before a big swim meet, I decided to tell my grandma that I was quitting the swim team. After I told her, she looked me in the eye and said, “Baby, remember these words. ‘Quitters never win and winners never quit’. Your grandmother didn’t raise losers or quitters. You go to that meet tomorrow, and you swim like you are a grandchild of mine, you hear ” I was too afraid to say anything but “Yes, ma’am.”
The next day, we arrived at the swim meet late, which meant that I missed my group of swimmers in the 15/16 age group. My coach insisted I be allowed to swim with the older 17/18 age group. I knew she didn’t think I could win; she just didn’t want me to have taken such a long drive to get here for nothing.
As I mounted the board, all the other girls looked at me. I realized that these girls were here to do one thing — beat me! All of a sudden, my grandma’s words rang in my head. “Quitters never win and winners never quit. You swim like you are a grandchild of mine.” “Yes, grandma, I will swim like I am a grandchild of yours,” I said to myself.

第六部分 读后续写 参考范文
SPLASH! I swam harder than I had ever swum before. Every stroke carried my grandma’s encouraging words. I ignored the faster girls beside me and focused all my energy on moving forward. My arms and legs ached terribly, but I refused to slow down. All the thoughts of giving up disappeared completely. I just kept pushing myself forward without pause.
It was then that I heard the claps and cheers around me. I lifted my head and found I was the first one to reach the finish line. My coach rushed over to give me a big hug. I thought of grandma’s words again and felt so thankful. I realized that true victory never belongs to those who give up easily. From then on, I kept training and never wanted to quit swimming any more.
