Fan Siyan was born in 1990 in Pizhou, a city in Jiangsu Province. After she graduated from university in 2012, she faced a dilemma (两难): accept a comfortable, decent-paying job in a busy city or return to her hometown to work in the fields, where she was raised. After much consideration, she chose the latter. In this way, she could use her knowledge to help her fellow villagers live better.
Shortly after she moved back, Fan found out many of the farmers suffered economic losses because they lacked technical skills. She quickly realized agriculture was not simply planting and harvesting; rather, it required constant learning and exploration. She began studying agricultural techniques, and consulting experts, and she gradually gained rich practical experience.
“To grow a business, one cannot just rely on their own strength,” Fan has said many times. In 2016, she co-founded Dazhuang Agricultural Science and Technology Development Company with several like-minded partners. They developed a demonstration base to promote a modern, industrialized vegetable plantation, which covered 6 hectares of land. They worked tirelessly as they conducted research, developed vegetable seeds, and promoted agricultural technologies. Now the company has expanded its seedling base from 6 hectares to 38 hectares.
In 2022, Fan established a field women’s home. She held various training sessions, addressing marketing, planting techniques and family management. By the end of 2024, Fan had helped more than 200 women secure jobs, 19 women start family farms, and 41 women further their education. With her help, many rural women have begun businesses. Together, those women have become a vital force in rural revitalization (振兴).
Fan’s efforts have earned her widespread recognition. She was chosen as a March 8th Red-Banner Holder in 2023. Fan says she will continue leading villagers in working hard and using practical actions to shoulder the responsibility of being a “new farmer”. She believes, with a collective effort, rural areas will become even more beautiful and brilliant.

Why do people seek out information about an ex's new relationships, read negative Internet comments and do other things that will obviously be painful Because humans are born with the need to resolve uncertainty, according to a recent study in Psychological Science. The new research reveals that the need to know is so strong that people will seek to avoid their curiosity even when it is clear the answer will hurt.
In a series of four experiments, the students were tested on their willingness to expose themselves to disgusting stimuli(刺激物)in an effort to satisfy curiosity. For one trial, each participant was shown a pile of pens, half of which would deliver an electric shock when clicked. Twenty-seven students were informed of the exact pens; another 27 were told only that some were electrified. When left alone in the room, the students who did not know which ones would shock them clicked more pens and brought more shocks than the students who knew what would happen. The following experiments copied this effect with other stimuli, such as the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard and photographs of disgusting insects.
The drive to discover is deeply-rooted in humans, just like the basic drive for food, says Christopher Hsee of the University of Chicago, a co-author of the paper. Curiosity is often considered a good instinct(本能)—it can lead to new scientific advances, for instance—but sometimes such inquiry can backfire. “The insight that curiosity can drive you to do self-destructive things is a profound one,” says George Loewenstein, a professor of economics and phychology at Carnegie Mellon University who has pioneered the scientific study of curiosity.
Morbid(病态的)curiosity is possible to resist however. In a final experiment, participants who were encouraged to predict how they would feel after viewing an unpleasant picture were less likely to choose to see such an image. These results suggest that imagining the outcome of following through on one's curiosity ahead of time can help determine whether it is worth the risk. “Thinking about long term consequences is key to reducing the possible negative effects of curiosity,” Hsee says. In other words, don't red online comments.
8. Why do people read negative internet comments according to the passage
A.To broaden the horizon.
B.To ease their pain.
C.To preserve their reputation.
D.To satisfy their curiosity.
9. What writing technique is used in Paragraph 2
A.Giving examples.
B.Describing facts.
C.Making comparisons.
D.Explaining causes.
10. What does the underlined word “backfire” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Add fuel to the fire.
B.Cause a sudden explosion.
C.Produce an opposite effect.
D.Provide approval and support.
11. How can morbid curiosity be resisted
A.By predicting potential outcomes.
B.By participating in more experiments.
C.By reading negative online comments.
D.By considering the positive consequences.

On the night of February 16, 2026, the CCTV Spring Festival Gala surprised the world with a special program called WuBOT. Unlike previous years where robots moved slowly in lines, this time, over 20 humanoid robots performed Chinese Kung Fu together. They were made by a Chinese company called Unitree Robotics.
The robots, models G1 and H2, showed amazing skills. They could run fast, jump over tables, and even do backflips in the air. One robot jumped 3 meters high, nearly touching the ceiling of the studio! Another group of robots fought with wooden sticks against real Kung Fu students from a famous martial arts school. They moved so smoothly that some viewers thought the video was played backwards.
What made this performance special was that the robots acted autonomously. This means no humans controlled them with remote controls during the show. They used 3D lasers and sensors to “see” the stage and each other. If one robot made a mistake or was pushed, it could correct itself in milliseconds.
“The goal is not just to perform on stage,” said Wang Xingxing, the founder of Unitree. “We want these robots to help people in factories and homes in the future. The Spring Festival Gala is a great place to show how far Chinese technology has come.”
Many young students watched the show and felt proud. “I never thought robots could do Kung Fu so well,” said Li Hua, a 14-year-old student from Jinan, “It makes me want to study science and create useful robots for our country.”
12. What was the main difference between the 2026 robot performance and previous ones
A.The robots moved slowly in straight lines.
B.The robots moved fast and did difficult Kung Fu moves.
C.The robots were controlled by humans with remote controls.
D.The robots only danced without any martial arts skills.
13. How did the robots know where to move on the stage
A.They followed the instructions of the directors.
B.They watched the other human performers.
C.They used 3D lasers and sensors to see the environment.
D.They memorized the map of the stage before the show.
14. According to Wang Xingxing, why did they show the robots on the Gala
A.To entertain the audience.
B.To replace human workers in the film industry.
C.To show technological progress and future use in daily life.
D.To prove the robots are better than human Kung Fu masters.
15. Which of the following statement best reflects the author’s attitude to the WuBOT program
A.Skeptical.
B.Indifferent.
C.Sympathetic.
D.Favorable.

Mason, a 16-year-old from New Zealand, had just started his exchange year at a Chinese high school. The school was full of energy, and the students seemed warm and welcoming. However, Mason often felt nervous because of the language barrier (障碍).
Although Mason had studied some Chinese before, he was still not confident, especially when it came to Chinese writing. Spoken mistakes could be corrected quickly, but written ones stayed on the paper, clear for everyone to see. He worried that his classmates might laugh at him if he used the wrong words or made grammatical mistakes.
One Monday morning, Mason’s Chinese teacher gave the class a task. Each student needed to write a short text to introduce themselves. The letters would be posted on the class notice board. When Mason heard this, he felt a wave of fear. He stared at the blank page, not knowing where to start.
After class, Mason remained at his desk. His deskmate, Li Juan, noticed that Mason looked worried and asked him what was wrong. After a moment of silence, Mason shared his fear of writing in Chinese and being laughed at by others.
Li Juan smiled and shook her head. “Everyone makes mistakes while learning a new language,” she said. “We all learn by making them.” She encouraged Mason to write in simple Chinese and focus on expressing his ideas, without worrying too much about grammar. Li Juan even offered to help Mason check his letter later.
That night, Mason finally picked up his pen and began to write. He wrote slowly and carefully, choosing words he was familiar with. Though he was still nervous, he finished the letter and felt a sense of relief.
The next day, Mason walked into the classroom, holding his letter tightly in his hand, unsure of what would happen next.

Dear editors,
Recently I watched the popular TV series Eight Thousand Miles of Clouds and Moon, which impressed me deeply.
Set in the war against Japanese invaders, it tells a touching story. General Zhang Yunkui’s army was defeated and he was wrongly called a deserter. Instead of giving up, he changed his name and joined the New Fourth Army to fight the Japanese. Meng Wanfu, a cook saved by Zhang, took good care of Zhang’s family. All of them stuck to their belief in our motherland.
What moves me most is General Zhang. Treated unfairly, he cared nothing about his fame but devoted himself to defending our country without fear of sacrifice.
This series teaches me we should always love our country and shoulder our responsibility.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

After class, Mason showed his text to Li Juan. Li Juan read it patiently and pointed out several small grammar mistakes gently. She told Mason these errors were totally normal for new learners and helped him correct them one by one. She also praised his clear self-introduction and sincere feelings. With Li Juan’s help, Mason felt much more confident. He handed in his writing and waited anxiously for it to be posted on the notice board.
To Mason’s surprise, no one laughed. Many classmates came to read his introduction and gave him warm smiles. Some even talked with him to know more about New Zealand. Mason realized mistakes were just parts of learning. From then on, he dared to write more Chinese articles and gradually fitted in with his Chinese classmates.
