My family would describe me as anything but a risk-taker. “Grandma drives faster than you!” my younger son likes to joke with me. So when I announced I was going to step outside my comfort zone and sign up for a self-defense course, my children, my husband, and even my mom were a bit doubtful.
A gym near my house was offering two-hour classes including boxing, wrestling and judo. I signed up for it and for the next days I questioned whether yoga would have been a wiser choice. The morning of the class, I pulled up to the gym, grabbed my water bottle along with a bit of courage I brought with me, and walked inside. We learned how to kick and knee someone where it counts and how to strike using the palms of our hands. After the coach showed various escape skills, I found myself questioning my presence in such a setting. However, in the next second, I reminded myself that I had set out this journey to explore the furthest part of my abilities and to challenge the boundary of what I believed I was able to achieve.
Before I entered the gym, I never imagined I would have the confidence and courage to throw a blow that could discourage someone twice my size. Almost two years later, I still attend classes. As the oldest female in the class, I push myself to keep up, try harder and, more importantly, not quit.
Between increasing my strength and feeling confident about protecting myself (although I hope I never have to test my skills outside of the gym), I’m proud of the risk I took in signing up for the course. I know that defending myself is not about strength, it’s about strategy. At the same time, I’m calmer and less anxious — a benefit my family enjoys.
As for my driving, after a recent lunch date, my mom suggested I speed up to at least the speed limit. She didn’t want to be late for her tennis match.

If a stranger knocked on your door asking for using your phone, would you help How about lending them five dollars for the bus, if they said they’d return and pay you back
Nowadays, many people find it hard to trust strangers. A recent study found that our ability to trust strangers may be more than just a social or psychological characteristic — it could be rooted in our DNA. This is important, as it turns out that trusting people might actually live longer and healthier lives compared to more skeptical (怀疑的) people.
Two main theories have appeared to explain why some people are more trusting than others. One suggests trust is a stable characteristic shaped by early life experiences. The other thinks it’s influenced by a person’s ongoing evaluation of the social environment. We can easily imagine that the answer to the question “Would you say that most people can be trusted ” would depend on whether you’d been robbed the day before or if you’d had your missing wallet returned.
This is where the recent research comes in. A professor of Lund University, Edgerton and his coworkers have been doing research about trust. In their most recent study, involving 33,882 Danish blood donors, they found a single gene (基因) — PLPP4, strongly associated with the personality of trusting others, and that the PLPP4 gene explained 6% of the difference in social trust within the study population. If you take two people who have similar education and life experiences, this gene alone could account for 6% of the difference in how much they trust others.
They believe that the PLPP4 gene may somehow soften our “fight-or-flight” survival response. If our fight-or-flight system is less strong when we meet new people, it makes sense that trusting others could have huge health benefits. Indeed, if trusting others acts as something against stress, it may lower the risk of cardiovascular (心血管的) disease.
As people continue to uncover the mysteries of trust, one thing is clear: understanding its genetic roots may hold the key to developing healthier communities in the world.
8. What might affect people’s trust levels according to the two main theories
A.Childhood habits.
B.Personal abilities.
C.Social experiences.
D.Communication skills.
9. What does the recent study focus on
A.The mental cause of trust.
B.The ways to develop survival ability.
C.The characteristics of different genes.
D.The connection between trust and a gene.
10. What does the passage say about trusting others
A.It could bring health benefits.
B.It reduces the strong stress in work.
C.It helps to develop the world faster.
D.It causes quicker survival response.
11. What can be inferred from the passage
A.The ability to trust others relates to a single gene.
B.How trusting you are frees people from disease.
C.Your understanding of gene accounts for developed communities.
D.The PLPP4 gene lays the foundation of survival response.

The island of Bali is a very popular vacation spot in Indonesia. Bali has beautiful beaches with white sand and crystal clear waters. But because there are so many tourists, this often means there is an increase of plastic, garbage and waste left on Bali’s beaches. Thankfully, there is now an amazing technological advancement called the BeBot Smart Beach Cleaning Robot, which can take care of this exact problem.
The BeBot robot went to market in May of 2025. It operates with very limited human intervention and is solar-powered, making it eco-friendly. The robot collects waste and trash from the beaches very efficiently and quickly. However, these robots are expensive, involving the high maintenance cost in the long run. The local government stresses that the BeBot robot is an innovative and effective tool but the responsibility of environmental protection still lies on people. Every person must be careful with their trash and know how to deal with their waste appropriately and responsibly.
The BeBot robot represents more than just clean beaches, which is an important goal in and of itself. It also shows that the people in charge of Bali have sustainability as a goal, and that they care about wasting less.
Bali’s waste management strategy is really working, and they have even been able to recently close their biggest open landfill (填埋场), Suwung TPA. In addition to that huge achievement, since the island province began using the robots to clean beaches, Bali has been able to successfully reduce waste in their landfills from 80% to 20%. The trash is now being sorted better, which allows the items to be recycled, reused or processed in more sustainable ways instead. And what’s even more impressive is that they are on track to reduce it down to 5%.
The BeBot robot indicates hope, innovation, creativity and efficiency. And if you are ever in Bali and get to see it in action, or even if you see it just on video, remember: People have the ability to live on a cleaner and less wasteful planet. And any challenge can be tackled with a bit of creativity and innovation, one step, or wave, at a time.
12. What is the local government’s attitude towards the use of the BeBot robot in Bali
A.Overly reliant.
B.Sensibly supportive.
C.Strongly opposed.
D.Totally indifferent.
13. What deeper meaning does the BeBot robot hold beyond beach cleaning
A.The potential for complete removal of waste.
B.Indonesia’s leadership in robotic technology.
C.Bali’s commitment to sustainable waste management.
D.The advantage of solar power resources over traditional ones.
14. Which might be one of Bali’s future waste management goals
A.To focus on developing advanced robots.
B.To achieve near-zero waste going to landfills.
C.To share the waste management technology globally.
D.To close the largest landfill for its environment impact.
15. What might be the best title for the text
A.BeBot: The Fast Development of Clean Technology
B.BeBot: The Link between Tourism and Environment
C.BeBot: A Green Hope for Bali’s Waste Problem
D.BeBot: The Key to Promoting Bali’s Tourism

In a coastal village named Seaford, lived a brave young woman named Agatha, who was known for her adventurous nature. From the time she could walk, she would eagerly run towards the crashing waves, feeling the sand under her feet and the cool sea spray on her face. She had a strong will and a kind heart. Agatha loved the ocean deeply and spent most of her days exploring the beautiful beaches and sparkling waters that surrounded her house.
One sunny morning, while walking along the shore, Agatha noticed something unusual. A group of seagulls were circling above the crashing waves and making strange cries. Concerned for their well-being, she followed them, her instinct (本能) guiding her toward danger.
As she approached a high cliff (悬崖), Agatha stopped in shock. On a narrow ledge (岩架), high above the rough waves, lay a young dolphin trapped in a thick fishing net. Its shiny body shone under the golden rays of the sun, but the net held it tightly. With each struggle, the net tightened around its delicate body, leaving painful marks on its skin. Its tail moved helplessly, each movement a request for help, while its bitter cries for assistance echoed through the air.
A sense of urgency filled her, pushing her forward with determination. Realizing that the time was tight, Agatha knew she had to act immediately to free this poor creature from its difficult position before it became too tired or was swept away by the rising tide.
Paragraph 1: Heart racing, Agatha ran back to the village to get help.

五、读后续写 参考范文
Paragraph 1: Heart racing, Agatha ran back to the village to get help. She shouted loudly to call several strong fishermen, telling them about the trapped dolphin on the cliff ledge. Without delay, they grabbed thick ropes, sharp knives and safety tools and hurried to the cliff. The tide was rising fast, so they worked closely as a team. One man tied the rope firmly to a big rock, while others carefully climbed down the steep cliff step by step. They gently held the dolphin still and cut the net bit by bit to avoid hurting its soft skin. Soon the net fell apart completely.
Paragraph 2: As the dolphin was gently released into the waters, it hesitated for a moment. Then it swam around Agatha and the fishermen several times, splashing water happily as if to express its thanks. After that, it dived deep and jumped out of the shiny waves again and again before swimming far out to sea. Watching its free figure, everyone felt warm and joyful. Agatha realized protecting marine animals was the most meaningful thing she had ever done, and she made up her mind to tell villagers to use friendly fishing nets later.
