Lexie Alford, 21, said she recently became the youngest person to visit every country. Though her achievement is yet to be confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records, Alford said she had been to 196 countries. While her adventures may have looked attractive and exciting on her social media account, Alford faced various difficulties such as visa rejections, financial struggles, and health issues like malaria and food poisoning.
For most people, the barrier to seeing the world is lack of money, but Alford managed to fund her travels largely on her own. She started working multiple jobs and saving everything she had earned since she was 12 years old. Additionally, her mother owns a travel agency and it has helped her find the best deals and book ahead of time, contributing to significant savings on flights and hotels.
As a solo female traveler, Alford prioritized safety when deciding how long to stay in a country, in addition to budget and personal interest. She spent over a month in countries like Egypt and Switzerland, where there was so much she could do and there were ways to make those trips financially reasonable. Then there are some countries like Mali, South Sudan, and Somalia which she would have loved to spend more than a few days exploring, but unfortunately she didn't have the budget to take the proper security precautions necessary to travel throughout those countries safely. Despite experiencing intense loneliness at times, Alford thinks that solo travel is a rewarding experience that everyone should have at least once in their lives.
After her travels, Alford now believes that every problem has a solution if you work hard enough. There are also a lot of sacrifices you have to make if you want to travel the world, but if it's something you' re truly passionate about, it only takes courage to pursue it.
4. What word best characterizes Alford's journey to 196 countries
A.Eventful. B.Pleasant. C.Costly. D.Romantic.
5. How did Alford finance travel expenses
A.By securing free flights and hotel stays.
B.By getting support from her parents.
C.By managing her mother's travel agency.
D.By taking jobs and setting aside earnings.
6. What accounts for Alford's short stay in countries like Mali
A.Limited funds for safety measures.
B.Lack of interest in their attractions.
C.Intense loneliness during solo travel.
D.Difficulty in communicating with locals.
7. What does Alford highlight about his world travel in the last paragraph
A.Sacrifices are often necessary.
B.Every problem has a solution.
C.Genuine enthusiasm counts most.
D.Spirit of adventure is appreciated.

Giving has many benefits, but it isn’t always easy. For example, if you suffer from depression (抑郁), you may find it hard to get up in the morning, let alone help others. But new research by Shenzhen and Peking Universities finds there may be a clever way to give. In the study, researchers arranged hundreds of young, depressed adults to either make daily micro-donations for two months or to be on a waiting list. Told that giving small donations helps improve society, participants were invited to donate at least one cent per day for the next two months to any charity.
Before and every week during those two months, all participants filled out questionnaires that were about their possible depression-related aspects: depressed feelings, lack of joy, physical discomforts, sleepiness, and interpersonal problems, as well as how often they felt positive and negative feelings.
After analyzing the results, the researchers found people who donated daily, even as little as one cent a day, felt significantly more positive than people on the waiting list. This, in turn, seemed to explain why they also felt less depressed each week. In other words, making donations, even small ones, helps improve mood (心情). And, though social connection wasn’t necessary for deriving benefit, the study suggests donating could help depressed people who might otherwise refuse to practice kindness toward others, according to Jinting Liu, one of the study’s coauthors.
Liu suggests this could be due to the fact that if you tend to feel depressed, focusing on others for a while gives you a break from thinking about yourself and your shortcomings. It’s also possible that giving makes you feel better about yourself and that prevents the negative self-talk common to depressives.
Interestingly, although people who gave more generously felt a bit happier and less depressed than those who gave less, the difference wasn’t big enough to be significant. This means even people with low means can make use of this simple activity. “Just doing something nice for others is great,” says Liu. “The amount of money isn’t the key part; it’s really about the kindness behind it.”
8. What information did the researchers collect about all participants
A.Their levels of depressive signs.
B.Their willingness to donate.
C.The quality of their social life.
D.The frequency of their sleepiness.
9. What does the underlined word “deriving” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Using. B.Reducing. C.Doubting. D.Getting.
10. Why might giving help depressed individuals
A.It ensures comfortable talks.
B.It reduces self-focus time.
C.It encourages physical activity.
D.It improves interpersonal relationships.
11. What can be learned according to the study
A.Giving is difficult to practice.
B.Money amount determines results.
C.Tiny kindnesses remain helpful.
D.Generosity is the key source of joy.
D
Have you ever seen an animal video online that made you stop and wonder Videos showing a wolf taking care of a rabbit, or a lion walking calmly through a small town are now spreading widely. This is possible because of AI technology. However, scientists warn such popular videos may hurt real wildlife protection and spread wrong ideas about nature.
A study in Conservation Biology points out that AI-generated (AI生成的) animal videos create an untrue world, leading to wrong ideas about animal behavior and broadening the gap between people and nature. Co-author José Guerrero-Casado stresses the danger of false information. For example, videos showing birds killing “bad” snakes might make people less willing to protect snakes, and create false ideas about animals that are already in danger.
The effect on children is especially worrying. These videos can give them wrong ideas about how people and animals really get along. When children discover that real-world animals do not act as they do in these made-up videos, it can have the opposite result, finally making them feel less connected to nature. This risk grows as young people increasingly turn to social media for information.
So, how can one recognize these videos Experts suggest looking for a few signs: unnatural animal movements that appear too smooth or seem impossible in real life; light and shadows that do not look quite right; and small details like fur or feathers that appear unclear or repeat in an unusual way.
To deal with these risks, the research team suggests putting more effort into education, like teaching media literacy (素养) in schools. As another co-author Francisco Sánchez says, the goal is to make sure “children learn early that there are no lions living here.” While they think this is important, the researchers also say that school lessons alone cannot stop the spread of false information made by AI. This leads to an important question about who else in society needs to help solve this problem, if school education is not enough.
12. How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph
A.By giving examples.
B.By making a comparison.
C.By quoting an expert.
D.By sharing an experience.
13. What can be inferred about AI-generated animal videos
A.They make children love animals less.
B.They mainly focus on species in danger.
C.They may make animals seem dangerous.
D.They create a false understanding of nature.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards AI-generated animal videos
A.Supportive. B.Indifferent. C.Concerned. D.Doubtful.
15. What will the author most probably discuss next
A.The media literacy lessons.
B.The duties of social media.
C.The popularity of such videos.
D.The threats to wildlife protection.

A piercing (刺耳的) alarm wakes you up from your sweet dream. But it’s not your alarm clock — your building is on fire. ____16____. Here are some suggestions to improve your chances.
____17____.
If you’re in the market for a new home, or if you simply like playing with buttons, a high-rise (高层的) apartment sounds like the right fit for you. Still, it’s essential to get prepared. Make sure you choose a building with an up-to-date fire safety system. Familiarize yourself with the building’s emergency procedures and locate all emergency exits.
Don’t panic
An unexpected fire alarm will be scary, but try to stay calm. Keep a clear head and try to figure out whether the fire is above you, below you, or on your floor. Then feel the door to your unit. If it is cool, you should be able to leave your apartment and head for the nearest exit. If you do leave, be sure to close all the doors behind you. ____18____.
Get down to the floor
The primary killer in a fire is smoke, not the heat or flames. If you have to pass through smoke, make sure you do so by crawling on all fours. Crawl your way through the smoke, as breathable air is often closest to the floor. ____19____. This helps filter out the smoke as you breathe.
Never attempt to jump
Do not jump from any floor above the second. You’ll likely have better chances of survival waiting inside for help to arrive. Although it feels unreasonable to wait during a fire, panicked decisions can lead to costly mistakes. ____20____. They use fire-resistant materials and are equipped with sprinklers, alarms, and emergency voice systems to guide you.
A.Do your research
B.Update emergency procedures
C.It picks up first responders at ground level
D.Meanwhile, use a wet cloth to cover your nose and mouth
E.The good news is that today’s high-rises are built for fire safety
F.By doing so, you don’t give the fire more oxygen to keep burning
G.If you’re in a burning high-rise apartment, your choices determine whether you survive

My cousin Allen was the coolest person in all of Minneapolis. By the age of 19, he was a star football player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be just like him. So when Allen asked me to join him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I said yes!
After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies and then set off on our adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest by early evening. On the way to our campsite, Allen pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the foresters worked.
Allen knew all the tricks of an experienced camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest floor, he started the campfire using only stone and steel, no matches. After a day of travelling, we were very hungry. We ate beef and rice and some soup as well.
Exhausted, we crawled into our sleeping bags early. Allen was still talking about his past camping adventures when a sudden wind picked up from the north. The temperature dropped and it began to snow. Allen knew of a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log from the woods, wrapped aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log and then placed it near the campfire. The heat from the fire reflected into the tent. Soon the tent was warm again and thoughts of lake fish filled my dreams.
I was still dreaming when Allen woke me up in a panic. Our tent was on fire! The snow had stopped during the night, but the wind had fanned the flames of the fire towards our tent. Frightened by the flames, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed with Allen inside. Without any hesitation, I reached into the burning tent, grabbed him, and dragged him to the icy lake. We checked each other to make sure neither of us was hurt.
Later, as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm, we considered our situation.

Suddenly, we heard a noise in the forest.

Dear Editor,
I’m writing to share my opinion on students making teachers’ photos into memes and posting them online.
I think this behavior is impolite and disrespectful. It hurts teachers’ feelings and ruins the harmonious teacher-student relationship.
We should respect teachers all the time. If we want to create interesting works, we’d better choose other proper materials instead of teachers’ photos.
Sincerely,
Li Hua
五、读后续写 参考范文
Later, as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm, we considered our situation. All our clothes, food and mobile phones were burnt in the fire. We had no supplies and didn’t know how to get back to town. Cold and worried, we stared at the burning tent helplessly, not knowing what to do next. Allen blamed himself for the fire, while I comforted him that safety was the most important thing.
Suddenly, we heard a noise in the forest. We turned around and saw a forest ranger driving a small truck towards us. He noticed the smoke from far away and came to check what had happened. He took us to the ranger station, gave us hot food and warm blankets. The next morning, he drove us back to the city safely. This terrible camping trip taught us to pay close attention to fire safety outdoors.
