Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was a beloved British children’s author whose imaginative tales and playful language redefined childhood literature. Born in Cardiff to Norwegian parents, Dahl discovered his passion for storytelling at a young age. His unique life experiences, including his time at boarding schools, inspired the vivid stories he would later create.
After working for Shell Petroleum, Dahl turned to writing and published his first children’s book, The Gremlins (1943), which was inspired by folk tales and commissioned (委托) by Walt Disney. However, it was his later works that truly established his reputation. Books like James and the Giant Peach and The BFG combined fantasy with dark humor, featuring brave children overcoming tough problems.
One of Dahl’s most popular works is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964). This timeless story explores themes of greed and morality through the eyes of Charlie Bucket, a poor but kind-hearted boy who wins a golden ticket to tour Willy Wonka’s magical chocolate factory. Inside the factory, Charlie meets other children who represent different negative qualities. In contrast, Charlie’s modesty and kindness make him the perfect heir (继承人) to Wonka’s factory. The book is filled with fantastical elements, such as eatable gardens and nut-sorting squirrels, showcasing Dahl’s limitless imagination.
Dahl’s writing process was as quirky as his stories. In the 1960s, he transformed an old truck into a writing space, parking it in his garden in Great Missenden, Oxfordshire. There, he crafted tales of underdogs winning over greed and unfairness, such as in Danny the Champion of the World, where a father and son outsmart a wealthy landowner.
Beyond children’s books, Dahl wrote screenplays, including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the James Bond film You Only Live Twice. His adult short stories were also highly praised. Despite personal struggles, his work radiated humor and hope. In a poll commissioned by Canon UK, Dahl was voted “Britain’s greatest storyteller”, outshining even Dickens and J. K. Rowling.
Roald Dahl’s books have been translated into 63 languages and continue to inspire generations to embrace imagination, challenge unfairness and find joy in the unexpected.

Magnesium (镁) is “the relaxation mineral” and a critical nutrient involved in at least 300 enzyme (酶) reactions within the human body — and according to some studies, up to 600. This means magnesium is fundamental for muscle and nerve function, regulating blood sugar and blood pressure, and producing protein, bone, and DNA. Given its central role in so many physiological functions, it’s clear why a magnesium insufficiency can lead to symptoms such as tiredness, muscle pains, mental issues, irregular heart rhythms, and increased stress.
However, many people aren’t getting enough magnesium. According to experts like Mark Hyman, MD, a leader in functional medicine, there are multiple reasons we’re not getting the recommended amounts of magnesium. Primarily, our meals are more processed and less nutrient-dense than ever before. Furthermore, the soil where our food grows is increasingly stripped of (剥夺) magnesium. Adding to this issue, our consumption of coffee, alcohol, and sugar, all of which can reduce magnesium levels, is also on the rise.
So by the time you see your doctor for muscle pains, poor sleep, unexplained weight problems, urinary (泌尿的) issues or another symptom of low magnesium, it’s likely you’ll discuss much magnesium you should take per day, and the best ways to get more magnesium.
The National Institutes of Health has set the upper limit of magnesium that you should take in addition form at 350 milligrams. Dr. Hyman suggests a daily supplemental magnesium intake of 300 milligrams. However, consult your healthcare provider to determine the proper amount for your unique needs, as some individuals may benefit from higher amounts.
Magnesium supplements can work, but experts suggest adding magnesium-rich foods to your diet is the best way to increase magnesium intake. These include dark leafy greens (spinach, kale), nuts and seeds (pumpkin seeds, almonds, chia seeds), whole grains (brown rice, quinoa), legumes (black beans, chickpeas), avocado, and dark chocolate. Additionally, an Epsom salt bath is a relaxing way to absorb magnesium through the skin.
8. What can we learn about magnesium from the text
A.It involves exactly 300 human enzyme reactions.
B.It has key effects on blood sugar- pressure regulation.
C.It is mainly responsible for relieving mental illnesses.
D.It may lead to increased muscle strength if insufficient.
9. What can be inferred from paragraph 2
A.Lifestyle greatly influences health.
B.People should get more nutrients.
C.Medicine performs vital functions.
D.People should not consume sugar.
10. What is the primary purpose of citing numbers in the paragraph 4
A.To present facts.
B.To contrast opinions.
C.To attract readers.
D.To add precision.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A.The Proven Magnesium Effect
B.The Critical Magnesium Intake
C.The Missing Relaxation Mineral
D.The Growing Supplement Market

Pomelo(a kind of fruit) has a thick peel that is typically thrown away, contributing to significant food waste. In a recent study, researchers at the University of Illinois looked into methods to repurpose it to develop a device capable of powering small electronic products.
The pomelo peel has a thin outer layer and a thick, soft inner layer. “Some people have used pomelo peels to extract mixtures for essential oils,” the researchers said, “but we wanted to take advantage of the structure of the peel so as to upcycle it into higher-value products.” They cut it into smaller pieces and freeze-dried it to maintain its unique three-dimensional porous (多孔的) architecture. By examining its chemical composition and mechanical properties, the research team engineered a device that transforms mechanical energy into electricity.
The device is contact electrified, which may sound complex, but is actually simple. When we touch a sweater, especially in the winter, sometimes we feel a shock. The basic mechanism is contact electrification, or rubbing-electrification (摩擦起电). When two materials are rubbed against each other, electricity can form due to the transfer of charges between them.
The researchers used the pomelo peel and a plastic film as two rubbing-electric layers that are brought into contact when external force is present. They attached an electrode to each of these layers to judge how well the resulting device could turn external mechanical energy into electricity. By simply tapping the pomelo-peel-based rubbing-electric device with a finger, they could light up about 20 LEDs. They also showed that a sports watch can be powered only by these mechanical forces, without the need of external electricity.
This work has strong potential to transform otherwise wasted energy into useful electricity; it could contribute significantly to long-term sustainability. Yi-Cheng Wang, a professor of College of Illinois, said, “We also found that, thanks to the pomelo peel’s naturally porous structure, rubbing-electric devices based on it can be highly sensitive to force and force frequency. Therefore, we got the idea of developing sensing devices that can be attached to the human body for biomechanical monitoring.”
12. What made the researchers develop the rubbing-electric device
A.The goal to produce more oils.
B.The desire to cut down food waste.
C.The need to test a freeze-drying technology.
D.The lack of effective power-generating tools.
13. What does paragraph 3 focus on about the device
A.Its developing process.
B.Its functional advantages.
C.Its working principle.
D.Its experimenting conditions.
14. Why are LEDs and the sports watch mentioned in paragraph 4
A.To prove the device’s effectiveness.
B.To stress their energy efficiency.
C.To show the device’s user-friendliness.
D.To measure their electricity consumption.
15. What can we know from Professor Wang’s words
A.The devices need further tests.
B.The devices inspired wider applications.
C.Pomelo peel may fail to respond to force.
D.Making sensing devices is their original goal.

The last lesson of the day was PE class. Alice was skipping rope on the playground, surrounded by several classmates watching her. It was her best sport. The rope spun (旋转) quickly as she jumped. When time was up, the counter showed 201 skips. Smiling, Alice flashed a victory sign to the crowd. Just then, the school bell rang — class was over. Alice packed up her skipping rope. It was time to give her answer to Ms. Harriet.
That morning, Ms. Harriet had asked her if she would be willing to take charge of the class bulletin board (板报) for the upcoming competition. The student who usually handled it, Lily, was sick, and someone needed to step in. Alice was shocked that Ms. Harriet had chosen her. She responded nervously, insisting that her handwriting was terrible. But Ms. Harriet reassured her, saying she believed in her ability and encouraged her to think it over and let her know her decision after school.
Now, walking toward the teachers’ office, Alice felt nervous. The thought of her messy handwriting being put up on the wall for everyone to see made her stomach turn. She had already made up her mind to say no. With that decision in mind, she quickened her pace and ran across the sports ground.
Alice was about to pass the sandpit (沙坑) when someone nearby caught her attention. It was Tom from a different class. In her mind, Tom had never been good at long jump, but he was practicing it. Curious, she went over to ask what he was doing. Tom explained that no one else had signed up for the long jump event, and without a participant, their class wouldn’t get any points in the school sports meeting. So when the headteacher asked if anyone would give it a try, he volunteered. Alice reminded him that he wasn’t good at it, but Tom simply said that he knew that and that it wasn’t about being the best, but about trying and doing his part for the class. Then he went back to practicing. What a similar issue they both faced! “If Tom could face his weakness, why couldn’t I ” Alice said to herself.

Digital Life Wisely
Dear schoolmates,
Nowadays, digital products are widely used in our daily life. They bring us convenience in study and communication, but spending too much time on them may influence our study and health.
To make better use of digital products, we have some suggestions. First, set a time limit for using electronic devices and avoid scrolling aimlessly. Second, use them mainly for learning and information searching instead of online games. Third, put down your phones to do sports or communicate with classmates face to face.
Let’s develop a wise digital habit and enjoy a healthier school life.

With this idea in mind, Alice stepped into the teachers’ office. Instead of refusing the task, she took a deep breath and told Ms. Harriet that she was willing to take charge of the bulletin board. She admitted her poor handwriting but promised to try her best and practice hard to make it perfect. Ms. Harriet smiled and praised her courage, encouraging her to make full preparations for the competition. Feeling relieved and motivated, Alice left the office with a determined heart.
A week later, the result of the competition came out. Surprisingly, their class bulletin board won the second prize. Although Alice’s handwriting was not the most beautiful, the whole board was neatly designed and creatively arranged, showing the class’s great effort. All classmates praised Alice for her hard work. Alice learned a valuable lesson: weakness should never be an excuse to give up. Only by bravely trying and sticking to responsibility can we make progress and achieve growth.
