In spring and early summer 2026, three exciting art exhibitions will take place across the UK — each exhibition is a unique spiritual encounter, and each work is a reflection of the artist’s spiritual world.
JOHN PIPER IN THE SOUTH COUNTRY
7 March to 7 June 2026
A focused exhibition examines how John Piper’s work was shaped by the landscapes and architecture , bringing together paintings, collages (拼贴画) and works across media made throughout his career. The selection shows Piper’s long-term interest in history and built forms. The works display Piper’s move away from abstraction towards more recognisable, emotional expressions.

Kyle Lybarger, an Alabama native who often wears camouflage (迷彩服), has found unexpected fame as a social media influencer by sharing his passion for southeastern native plants. Despite his background as a deer hunter and forester, he has become a guardian of rare and endangered plants across northern Alabama and beyond.
Lybarger owes his success to stubbornness, positive energy from his late father, and a lack of concern about others’ opinions. “You have to really not care about what people think of you,” he says. His unique approach has won praise from experts like Professor Dwayne Estes, who calls his story “an incredible success story in American conservation”.
His turning point came when a botanist showed him rare species like Alabama larkspur on a land Lybarger had previously cleared for hunting. He realized he had destroyed a diverse native ecosystem just to plant a few non-native species. “That’s when a great idea occurred,” he says. “Managing for biodiversity is probably the best option.”
Lybarger learned that before Europeans came, the Southeast had vast grasslands, but fire bans later allowed forests to grow over them. To protect remaining native habitats, he works with private landowners. On a friend’s home, he spotted an endangered species and asked to hang signs warning against mowing or spraying herbicide (除草剂).
In 2023, Lybarger partnered with an artist to design a T-shirt featuring another endangered plant — leafy prairie clover. When he learned that the plant’s habitat was for sale, his followers helped raise over $100,000 from T-shirt sales. He used most of the money to buy the 24 acres of forest land, which he promised to place in a land trust (土地信托).
However, Lybarger believes his biggest contribution is education on social media, inspiring people to grow native plants in their own yards. “One person, one yard, one-tenth of an acre can make a bigger difference than you think,” he says.
24. What makes Kyle Lybarger an unusual social media influencer
A.His education and professional career as a botanist.
B.His identity as a hunter promoting southeastern native plants.
C.His commercial success in designing themed clothing products.
D.His specific concern for rare animal protection in the region.
25. What was the key moment that changed Lybarger’s approach
A.The inspiring words from his father regarding a positive attitude.
B.His cooperation with landowners to find endangered species.
C.The financial benefits brought by marketing native plant products.
D.The shock of having destroyed a rare ecosystem for hunting needs.
26. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A.The challenges of working with private landowners.
B.How fire prevention changed the landscape of the Southeast.
C.The methods Lybarger uses to protect plants on private land.
D.The importance of posting warning signs for endangered species.
27. Which of the following best describes Kyle Lybarger as a person
A.Determined and responsible.
B.Wealthy and conservative.
C.Ambitious but cautious.
D.Talented and humorous.

In the face of adversity, we often think of courage as a rare gift — something people either have or they don’t. We imagine heroes who possess a “heart of steel.” However, modern psychology suggests that resilience is more of a skill than a fixed trait. It is a mental muscle that grows stronger only through the experience of struggle.
The common misconception is that a courageous person is one who is never affected by hardship. In reality, being resilient doesn’t mean you don’t feel the pain of a setback (挫折). Instead, it means you have the ability to “bounce back.” Think of a tree in a storm: the trees that survive are not the ones that are the most rigid (坚硬的), but the ones that can bend with the wind. Similarly, in our lives, the ability to adapt to changing circumstances is what allows us to endure long-term challenges without breaking.
Another key to courage is the “reframing” of failure. For many, failure is a dead end — a sign to stop trying. But for those with true resilience, failure is simply “data.” It is information that tells them what didn’t work, allowing them to adjust their strategy for the next attempt. This shift in perspective is the secret weapon of the brave. They don’t see an obstacle as a wall; they see it as a puzzle waiting to be solved.
Ultimately, courage is a quiet quality, which is not always found on battlefields or in dramatic rescues. More often, it is found in the student who fails an exam but chooses to study harder the next day, or the worker who loses a job but refuses to give up hope. As the saying goes, “The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.”
28. What can be inferred about resilience from the first two paragraphs
A.It is a natural talent that cannot be developed by training.
B.It requires a person to be as hard as steel in any situation.
C.It helps people avoid feeling any pain during a crisis.
D.It involves the flexibility to change when facing difficulties.
29. How does the author develop Paragraph 2
A.By analyzing scientific data.
B.By sharing a personal experience
C.By making a comparison.
D.By quoting expert opinions.
30. Which of the following best describes the “brave” people mentioned in Paragraph 3
A.They treat failures as useful information for future success.
B.They are born with the ability to solve all kinds of puzzles.
C.They never experience any obstacles on their way to a goal.
D.They believe that a wall is the most difficult obstacle to break.
31. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A.Courage is mainly demonstrated through heroic acts in battles.
B.True courage is often hidden in our daily persistence and hope.
C.Students who fail exams are more likely to become brave heroes.
D.The world is a place where only the strongest people can survive.
D
It is unwise to chop down rainforests. The social costs of clearing a small part of Brazilian Amazon are perhaps 30 times the benefits of raising cows on it, by one estimate from 2023. The problem is, those costs, including worsening climate change, are paid by the entire world’s population, while the profits from cutting down the trees just go to a small group of people. Somehow, the world has to find a way to make conservation pay.
Last year’s losses across the tropics (热带) added 3.1 billion tons of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, more than India added by burning fossil fuels. What is more, deforestation can cause a vicious cycle. Emissions raise temperatures, drying out plants and leading to wildfires. These wildfires then cause even more emissions.
All these lessons should be applied in other countries with rainforests. Unfortunately, many are far worse-governed than Brazil. Congo, for instance, passed a land-use law this year to protect local groups, but its government has weak control over its own land. Some local cash-for-conservation projects show promise. Currently, the main thing protecting Congo’s vast forests is its lack of roads. However, if roads are built faster than the laws are strengthened, loggers (伐木者) may get out of control.
Since preserving rainforests is a global public good, the world should help pay for it. But again, this is easier said than done. Rich countries have lost interest in aid. Markets for carbon credits (碳信用) have failed to take off, partly because it is hard to tell whether money given to conservation projects actually conserves trees. Brazil is trying hard to arouse interest in this idea. However, if the governments in question are corrupt, donors may have doubts.
32. What is the author’s purpose in writing the first paragraph
A.To encourage people to raise more cattle in Brazil.
B.To provide a solution to the problem of global deforestation.
C.To explain the economic reason why rainforests are destroyed.
D.To list the different groups of people who benefit from loggers.
33. What does the underlined word “vicious” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.unpredictable
B.natural
C.harmful
D.helpful
34. What is the author’s main concern about Congo’s forests
A.The success of local payment programs remains to be proved.
B.Improved road access may weaken control over deforestation.
C.The conservation efforts lack the necessary international funding.
D.The new law fails to provide adequate protection for native groups.
35. What can be the most suitable title for the text
A.The Global Struggle to Save the World’s Lungs
B.Rainforest Protection Needs to Be Made Profitable
C.The Economic Benefits of Rainforest Conservation
D.Brazil’s Efforts to Conserve Amazon Rainforests

An old farmer lived on a farm in the mountains with his young grandson. Each morning Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table reading his book. One day the grandson asked, “Grandpa! I try to read the book just like you but I don’t understand it, and I forget it as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the book do ”
After quietly putting coal in the stove , the grandfather replied, “Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water.”
The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back to the house. The grandfather laughed and said, “You’ll have to move a little faster next time,” and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was empty before he returned home. Out of breath, he told his grandfather that it was impossible to carry water in a basket, and he went to get a bucket instead. The old man said, “I don’t want a bucket of water; I want a basket of water. You’re just not trying hard enough,” and he went out the door to watch the boy try again.
At this point, the boy knew it was impossible, but he wanted to show his grandfather that even if he ran as fast as he could, the water would leak out before he got back to the house. The boy again dipped the basket into the river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandfather the basket was again empty. Out of breath, he said, “See Grandpa, it’s useless!”
“So you think it is useless ” the old man said. “Look at the basket.” The boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the basket was different. It had been transformed from a dirty old coal basket and was now clean, inside and out.

读后续写范文
The boy stood there, lost in deep thought. He stared at the clean basket and suddenly understood his grandpa’s words. Reading books was just like carrying water with the basket. Even though he couldn’t remember every word, reading slowly washed away his ignorance and bad thoughts, purifying his heart little by little. He felt ashamed of complaining about reading before and made up his mind to keep reading every day.
From that day on, the grandson changed completely. Every morning he sat beside Grandpa and read books quietly without complaining anymore. He didn’t care whether he could memorize all contents. Gradually, he became gentle, thoughtful and knowledgeable. Years later, he realized reading shaped his character quietly, just as the river cleaned the dirty coal basket bit by bit.
