Passage 2
I discovered my passion for portrait (肖像) photography when I was a teenager. After I got my camera, I spent months intensely researching my inspirations and trying to understand what made a great image. However, it wasn’t until one day, when a copy of the National Geographic Photo Issue arrived at my doorstep, that things changed.
The moment I saw Steve McCurry’s “Afghan Girl”, her eyes pierced (穿透) through the page and right at me. I was deeply moved by the way the eyes attracted my attention and how he was able to capture people and bring out the best in the people he was photographing.
With that in my mind, I took the picture that started my career in this setup, and the realization hit me: I didn’t need the most expensive or modern equipment to capture attractive portraits; all I needed was my camera and my passion to bring out the beauty in every person I photographed.
From then on, I spent every hour of my free time improving my skill. I did many shoots a month, spent countless hours searching the web for guides on lighting, Photoshop and everything photography-related, and then went out and applied the lessons I had learned to my shoots. Action was the key force that was moving my work forward.
After years of hard work, it occurred to me that there is no such thing as an overnight success. To be great, you just have to put in the work and keep doing it. It is said that it takes 10,000 hours to master your skill, but I feel that once you reach 10,000 hours, that is just the beginning of the journey.

Passage 3
When it comes to food in literature, there are basically two kinds: fictitious (虚构的) food, which is cooked and consumed by imaginary characters, and real food, which is prepared, eaten and honored by actual authors. The latter shows us how authors’ love of food finds its way into their books.
Charles Dickens, whose novels are full of goose and plum pudding, loved multiple courses (多道菜) and overflowing (堆满的) tables. We know this because Dickens’ wife, Catherine, published a cookbook — What Shall We Have for Dinner — under the pseudonym (笔名) of Lady Maria Clutterbuck.
The unsociable Emily Dickinson, known for pacing her bedroom in a white dress, seems an unlikely foodie — but actually she was famed in her hometown as a baker rather than a poet. This passion for baking is further evidenced by the fact that many of her recipes — occasionally with poems written on the back — survive.
A different combination of books and food appears in a 1907 essay by Lewis Carroll. “Breakfast, dinner, tea; in extreme cases, breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea, supper, and a glass of something hot at bedtime,” Carroll writes. “What care we take about feeding the lucky body! Which of us does as much for our mind ”
Like the body, he continues, the mind needs healthy food. Just as too much sugar brings on indigestion, too many “unhealthy novels” result in low spirits, laziness, and mental problems. Over-reading, like over-eating, is also a bad idea — that is, don’t wolf down too much all at once and stick to the topic: too much random (随意的) variety is never satisfying for the mind.
8. How does the author explain food in literature in paragraph 1
A.By asking a question. B.By defining a concept. C.By offering a reason D.By giving an example.
9. Why does the author mention What Shall We Have for Dinner
A.To show food affects Dickens’ writing.
B.To introduce Catherine’s literary work.
C.To explore food’s role in Victorian society.
D.To prove food brings readers closer to authors.
10. What can we learn about Emily Dickinson
A.She preferred cooking over poetry.
B.Her recipe poems drew more attention.
C.Her community valued home-based skills.
D.She was engaged in both poetry and baking.
11. What does Lewis Carroll try to convey in his 1907 essay
A.The importance of regular meals.
B.The necessity of feeding the mind.
C.The need for wide variety in reading.
D.The benefits of maintaining good health.
Passage 4
Historically, in South Africa, elephants moved freely across large landscapes. Today, however, they find themselves limited to fenced reserves (保护区), which represent less than 3% of the nation’s land area. On the other hand, their population has grown to about 44,000, more than four times the number three decades ago, but the land available to them is becoming smaller. The overpopulation in certain reserves has led to discussions of hunting, a measure that some argue is necessary. However, with progressive tools like the smart gate underway, authorities hope to avoid such measures.
Conservationist Hensman’s latest project uses AI-powered gates to create elephant migration (迁移) routes that cut across South Africa, connecting the separated habitats by creating safe corridors (地带) between them.
One of the gate’s great features is a sound system, which is used to train the elephants to relate specific sounds coming from the gate with places where something desirable is located. In early experiments, this was done by placing the gate on a path to a watering pool. Researchers would have the gate open and play the sound to them very quietly so they know it’s positive. With more gates come more connections. “We can join the reserves together, and we can start to get a flow of elephants... through corridors,” Hensman says.
Elephants’ moving around allows them to make better use of their limited space and live healthier lives. Moreover, elephants play a vital role in ecosystems by helping to spread seeds and creating water holes that benefit other wildlife. Therefore, building connectivity enables not only elephants but also other species to grow well in their natural environments. The gate can be conducive to healthier ecosystems and richer biodiversity.
12. What problem do the elephants face in South Africa
A.They are illegally hunted.
B.They are physically inactive.
C.They lack enough living space.
D.They fail to live in harmony with humans.
13. What is the primary purpose of the gate’s sound system
A.To direct elephants to a certain place.
B.To help elephants find water sources.
C.To push elephants to catch up with others.
D.To get elephants to relax during migration.
14. What does the underlined word “conducive” in the last paragraph mean
A.limited. B.Beneficial. C.Negative. D.Responsive.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Why Elephants Need to Move Around Freely
B.How to Recover Elephants’ Lost Landscapes
C.Smart Gates Join Elephants’ Separated Habitats
D.Fenced Reserves Benefit Elephants’ Survival
