Successor uses dark humor to explore family bonds, education, and personal growth. It follows Ma Chenggang, who adopts an extreme “poverty training” method to prepare his son for inheriting the family business. Directed, written, and edited by Shao Yihui, the film earned over 200 million yuan in just four days, gaining both huge box office success and positive word-of-mouth.
Article 20
Douban Rating: 7.5
Article 20, directed by renowned filmmakers Zhang Yimou, is a comedy inspired by Article 20 of China’s Criminal Law (on self-defense). Starring Lei Jiayin and Ma Li, it tells the story of prosecutor (检察官) Han Min, who deals with a controversial case while sorting out his own family troubles. The film offers a thought-provoking look at legal principles and real-life social issues in modern China.

Kendall Griffith is a student at Bard College majoring in both the pipa, a four-stringed Chinese lute, and Asian studies. Born and raised in Boston, Griffith started her journey into Chinese culture nine years ago, when she began learning Chinese for its writing system and tones.
While learning Chinese, she was fascinated by traditional Chinese music in a drama she was watching. Griffith did some research and discovered that the instrument she was drawn to was the pipa.
“I like the sound of the pipa, especially the techniques that are incorporated with it,” Griffith says, adding that her parents and friends have been very supportive of her learning Chinese traditional music.
Griffith’s father helped her discover the instrument and she found her first pipa teacher, who was part of the Boston Chinese Ensemble. Sometimes, after performances, people would tell her, “I’ve never seen a non-Chinese person play this before. That’s very cool.
Last semester, Griffith studied at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Learning the pipa in the city, where “Chinese music is happening”, Griffith felt pushed beyond her comfort zone and learned more about her passion.
“There was an interesting lecture that talked about the similarities between most Chinese music and things in calligraphy. There’s a lot of empty space, and I can now incorporate that feeling into a lot of the music I play,” she says. “Chinese music also emulates nature in a way. The sound it makes can resemble a horse; you can visualize it. There are many techniques not seen in Western instruments, such as bending the strings or using your five fingers to create a tremolo (颤音). I enjoy telling my friends about it,” she says. Griffith’s friends, who were amazed by her impressions, started attending more Chinese music concerts, wanting to learn more.
Diving into another culture through music makes Griffith value the culture more. She said, “When you learn about a different type of music, it makes you appreciate the culture more. It makes you realize how important it is to be open-minded. I feel more open-minded about why things are the way they are.”
4. What initially drew Griffith to start learning the pipa
A.Her major in Asian studies.
B.The Chinese tone system.
C.The unique sound of the pipa.
D.The support from her father.
5. What does the underlined word “emulates” in paragraph 6. mean
A.Imitate.
B.Protect.
C.Feature.
D.Enrich.
6. What can be inferred from people’s reactions after Griffith’s performances
A.They were skeptical about her skills.
B.They expected more Chinese elements in her playing.
C.They thought her performance was too traditional.
D.They were impressed by her non-Chinese background playing the pipa.
7. What benefit does Griffith get from learning Chinese music
A.It has deepened her love for Chinese culture.
B.It has developed her critical thinking.
C.It has promoted her Chinese learning.
D.It has made her more interested in Western music.

Climate change and habitat loss are affecting animal populations around the world, and reptiles (爬行动物) such as South Australia’s endangered pygmy bluetongue lizards (蜥蜴), are particularly vulnerable to rising temperatures and the long-term trend of decreasing rainfall.
Scientists from Flinders University are dedicated to ensuring a sustainable future for this burrow — dwelling endemic species (Tiliqua adelaidensis) by assessing whether they can fit into cooler and slightly greener locations, which are located below their typical range in the drier and hotter northern regions of the state.
The latest research, presented in a new article in Biology, compared the ability of three separate pygmy bluetongue lizard populations to survive different microclimates in South Australia — between the northern Flinders Ranges near Jamestown, Mid North near Burra, and southern-most translocation (迁移) sites near Tarlee and Kapunda.
The study, led by PhD candidate Deanne Trewartha from the College of Science and Engineering, says moving wildlife in a hotter, drier location to another microclimate can mean exposure to different temperatures, water availability and humidity and needs extensive assessment.
“We need to understand how this species, which is highly dependent on body temperature, adapts to cooler and often wetter seasons in these new environments,” says Trewartha.
Trewartha says the research recently suggests adapting to new sites may take longer than two years for all three populations and may vary with their origins. She says, “These three populations have shown various responses to their new locations, but behavioral variations are not harmful in the long term and may potentially aid animals in adapting to changed environments to increase their chance of survival.”
Mike Gardner, Flinders University Professor of Biodiversity and Ecology, says, “Australia has the highest reptile diversity in the world. With high biodiversity loss, translocation to ‘future — suitable’ sites is becoming increasingly urgent for the conservation of numerous reptile species.”
“Further monitoring of the three populations will continue to see other behavioral variations and the long-term behavioral adaptation periods for translocation,” says Trewartha.
8. What do Flinders University scientists keep doing to the translocated lizards
A.Preserving their original living places.
B.Introducing more lizard species for them.
C.Ensuring their habitats are free from rainfalls.
D.Monitoring their adaptability to new locations.
9. What is Trewartha’s attitude to the lizards’ behavioral variations
A.Negative.
B.Optimistic.
C.Indifferent.
D.Ambiguous.
10. What does Mike Gardner stress in Paragraph 7
A.The potential of reptile species.
B.The survival chance of lizards.
C.The necessity of translocation.
D.The high biodiversity in Australia.
11. From which section of a website is the text most probably taken
A.Technology.
B.Environment.
C.Health.
D.Tourism.

Social media is a huge part of modern teenage life, offering amazing connection but also risking mental health. While some praise its power to build communities and encourage self-expression, its negative effects are too serious to ignore, requiring us to seriously rethink its role.
On the one hand, social media provides a vital space for young people, especially those from marginalized (边缘化的) groups, to find support and share experiences. It makes it easier to access information and learn about different views. For many, it is also an important outlet for creativity, which can build confidence and a sense of belonging. The ability to keep friendships with people far away is another clear benefit.
However, the negative impacts often seem greater. The main danger is the “perfect life” often shown online. Seeing endless perfect images and lifestyles fuels social comparison, leading to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and depression. The constant chase for “likes” makes a person’s self-worth depend on public approval, creating huge pressure. Furthermore, cyberbullying (网络欺凌) can cause deep and lasting psychological harm. Sleep problems from late-night scrolling and the addictive design of the apps worsen these issues, harming emotional control during key stages of growth.
Therefore, while social media’s power to connect is clear, its current design is a serious threat to youth mental health. The platforms are built to maximize engagement, often at the cost of well-being, making social pressures and unrealistic expectations worse. The proven increase in anxiety and depression among heavy users highlights this crisis. Acknowledging the benefits is not enough; we must actively reduce the harm. This means teaching young users the skills to navigate (浏览) the digital world safely and healthily, so they don’t become victims of its darker side.
12. What is mentioned as a positive function of social media
A.Offering identity exploration spaces.
B.Reducing sleep quality significantly.
C.Increasing face-to-face interactions.
D.Removing social barriers completely.
13. Why does the author mention the chase for “likes”
A.To show it builds self-esteem.
B.To highlight its motivational role.
C.To criticize its link to self-worth.
D.To suggest removing all feedback.
14. What does the text imply about platform design
A.It prioritizes user privacy.
B.It seeks engagement over well-being.
C.It focuses on educational goals.
D.It is designed by mental health experts.
15. Which title best summarizes the text
A.A Guide to Safe Internet Use
B.The Rise of Digital Communities
C.How to Build Confidence Online
D.Social Media: A Double-Edged Sword for Teens

Life in the digital world can be rewarding. It’s convenient to order groceries for pickup, share photographs or music, and keep in touch with family and friends, no matter the distance. _______16_______ While digital detoxes, which involve intentionally avoiding digital technologies in the pursuit of balance and digital well-being, are helpful, they often fall short. Here are four strategies to improve digital well-being.
Finding replacement practices. We find that feelings of withdrawal during a digital detox are quite common. For many, reaching for their phones and scrolling (滚屏) has become such a habit that they often don’t realize they are doing it. Many turn to their devices when bored or stressed. _______17_______
Strengthening social bonds. _______18_______ This inborn desire for connection, however, combined with people’s reliance on technology, can lead to feelings of fear of missing out and anxiety during a digital detox. So, during a digital detox, it is vital to fill your cup with community.
_______19_______ In today’s fast-paced environment, finding a moment to stop can feel nearly impossible. Yet the ability to just find can allow time for reflection, helping you consider what makes you happy and healthy. Yoga and meditation (冥想) are common ways that detoxers find moments to become more aware of their own thoughts.
Viewing digital well-being as an ongoing journey. Ultimately, digital well-being is a journey. It is not a checklist that, once completed, means you are fulfilled. _______20_______ Instead, a successful detox often leaves people feeling introspective (反省的) and curious. Importantly, set and monitor goals to adapt to changing needs over time.
A.Emphasizing mindfulness.
B.However, it can also be tiring.
C.Being aware of different thoughts.
D.Humans are naturally social creatures.
E.A single detox isn’t enough to cure digital imbalance.
F.Therefore, finding an alternative to occupy their hands can be crucial.
G.These replacements often involve hobbies or activities resulting in play.

Ricky had finished school in his small hometown. Although his father hoped he would go on to study for a Master’s degree, Ricky was determined to learn computer skills. At school, he had once watched a computer demonstration and was deeply impressed. From then on, he made up his mind to leave the town and go to the city.
Life in the city was far from easy. Ricky’s troubles began with finding a place to live. He looked at several rooms, but either the rent was too high or the place was too far from his training institute. At last, an elderly couple agreed to take him in. The room was small and poorly ventilated, but Ricky felt thankful because they also provided him with meals.
Ricky attended classes regularly, yet he found it hard to follow the instructor. He sat at the back of the classroom, kept his eyes on his notebook, and wrote down whatever he could understand. As soon as class was over, he would leave quietly without speaking to anyone. Later, he would borrow the books recommended by the instructor from the library and spend the evening trying to understand them. While his classmates relaxed and enjoyed themselves after class, Ricky stayed by himself. Though he longed to join them, he lacked the courage. As the days went by, he began to doubt his decision. More than once, he wished he had listened to his father and chosen further study instead.
One day, his father came to see him and found him looking miserable. Ricky could no longer hold back his feelings. He told his father that he wanted to give up and return home. After listening patiently, his father suggested that he talk to the instructor about his difficulties and try reading books written by local authors or in a language he could understand more easily.
