Unlike students in China, Canadian high school students usually have lots of spare time, especially during weekends. So how do Canadian teenagers spend their weekends Well, volunteering makes up most of their spare time.
In Canada, volunteering is a very common thing among people of all ages, as they believe that being helpful is one of the most important qualities to have. There are many kinds of voluntary work, like organizing books in libraries, working as teachers at school and sending food to the old. Chances to help are everywhere, including in schools, shopping malls, or even people's gardens.
At present, I'm volunteering for a charity called the Tzu Chi Foundation, which is one of the biggest non-profit(非盈利) charities in the world. My job is to help the teachers at the charity's Chinese language school. I'm in charge of a preschool class, where students are aged from 3 to. When I first started, I was quite nervous as I'd never worked with little kids before.
Suddenly, a lot of questions filled my head and I got tons of butterflies in my stomach.“What if they don't like me What if they are afraid of me ”
Then, as time went on, I began to know the students more. One teacher asked me to help the youngest girl in the class draw a picture based on the word“grateful”. As I was drawing and talking with her, I felt warm and peaceful and suddenly realized that it was not that difficult to work with children. When the class was over, I breathed out deeply, feeling really excited and even a little bit proud of what I'd done.
Volunteering gives us a chance to change someone's life, including our own. Volunteering is also a great way to give back to society while developing social skills and valuable experience for the days ahead. That's also the reason why Canadian high school students have to volunteer for at least 40 hours in order to graduate. I think helping others is always good. All for one and one for all.

D. To show that Canadian students act as volunteers to make a difference.

I was an unlucky nurse who had to work on Christmas Day. It was always quiet in the emergency room on this day, so I was not expecting any patients. When I was complaining about working on such a beautiful festival, a pale woman and four small children showed up at my desk.
“Are you all sick ” I asked doubtfully because they seemed all right.
“Yes,” the woman answered in a low voice and lowered her head.
But when it came to their problems, things got a little strange. Two of the children had headaches, but they didn't hold their heads. Two children had earaches, but they couldn't tell me which ear was sore. The mother complained of a cough, but she seemed to be fine.
Something was wrong. I didn't do anything but said that it might take a while before a doctor could meet them.“Take your time, please,” the mother answered. I checked their charts(病历)-no address. Suddenly, I knew they were homeless and the hospital was warm.
I looked out at the family, sitting together under the Christmas tree, smiling and chatting with each other sweetly. Quietly, I went back to the nurses' station and told them that we had a homeless family in the waiting room. The nurses' station suddenly came back to life. All the nurses came into action, just as we did when there was a real medical emergency.
But this one was a “Christmas emergency”.
We took out our meals for our Christmas “patients”. We also collected oranges and apples as presents. Usually we just tried to meet the physical needs of our patients. But today, we worked hard to meet the needs of a family who only wanted a warm place on Christmas Day.
Later, when the family was leaving, the four-year-old girl ran back and gave me a kiss.“Thanks for being our angel(天使) today,”she whispered in my ear.

A. The writer was a very experienced doctor.
B. The nurses were very kind and caring.
C. The family came to the hospital with serious diseases.
D. The mother told the nurse their true situation at first.
36.What does the “Christmas emergency” in the story refer to
A. The serious medical needs of a sick family.
B. The nurses' kindness to a homeless family.
C. A sudden increase of patients in the emergency room.

An old saying goes “Laughter is the best medicine.” It s true that laughter is really good for our health. So, the next time you re feeling stressed, try to laugh a lot, develop a sense of humour and watch funny films.
The Comic Relief charity, an organization that helps people in need, uses laughter to raise money. Every two years in spring, many English people put on a red nose, make a fool of themselves and do “silly” things to make themselves and others laugh.
Examples of silly things you can do are:
Invite friends round to your house to watch funny films. They have to pay to watch the films, those with the most comfortable chairs pay more, and for food and drinks.
Hold a talent show at school and ask your friends and teachers to sing, dance or tell jokes. Sell tickets for the show to the rest of the school.
Have a red nose party at your house. All your friends come dressed in red, including red nose, and you serve red food and drinks. If they don t wear red, they have to pay a fine.
Get the students in your school to make funny sculptures (雕塑) using all kinds of materials. Sell tickets to your Red Nose Day exhibition and part of the money goes to Comic Relief.
The organization has helped people for more than 20 years. And how much have they collected since the first Red Nose Day Over 600 million! The idea of Red Nose Day has travelled to other countries, too. In New Zealand, for example, people have made big red noses which they put on the front of cars and even buildings.

【答案】Dear students,
In some parts of our country, there are many children out of school. They live in porery, so they have to work in the fields with their parents every day instead of going to school. What's worse, they can't drink clean water or have enough food, which makes them get sick easily. They can't get proper clothes or medical care when they are ill, which makes their life harder.
As students, we should do what we can to help them. First, we can donate our old books and stationery so they can have things to study with. Second, we can give away our pocket money to buy them clean water and food. We can also collect warm clothes for them. Third, we can write letters to encourage them to stay hopeful.
Let's take action now and bring warmth to these poor children!
Thanks for your joining.
