When I arrived in Minnesota as a 16-year-old exchange student from Germany, I thought I knew American life from movies — yellow school buses, Friday night football games, and people smiling all the time. But small, surprising things soon made me realize there were big culture shocks.
My host family, the Jennesses, lived in a quiet town near some lakes. The first confusing moment was at dinner. They talked happily while eating, even asking me questions with food in their mouths. In Germany, we always finish chewing and swallowing before speaking — it’s considered rude to talk with food in your mouth. Then there was the “school spirit”. Every Friday, the whole school wore the football team’s colors, and we had exciting pep rallies in the gym. Back home, our classes were always serious, and we never celebrated sports events like that.
The biggest challenge was going to a football game. My host sister Lily begged me to come, saying it was “the best event of the month”. I agreed, but I felt totally lost at first. Everyone brought blankets and snacks, cheering so loudly that I nearly dropped my jaw. At halftime, Lily gave me a foam finger and pulled me to shout chants with the crowd. I hesitated at first — this loud, happy energy felt so strange. But as I shouted along, I found myself smiling.
Thanksgiving was another amazing experience. I helped carve pumpkins (a Halloween tradition I’d only seen online) and tried to cook turkey with Sarah, my host mom. She laughed when I asked for a recipe, saying, “Cooking is about fun, not strict rules!” That night, as we sat around the table sharing what we were thankful for, I realized these “shocks” were just different ways of loving life.
By the end of my year, my English was much better. More importantly, I learned that culture is not about being right or wrong — it’s about opening your mind to new things.
4. Why did the writer feel confused at the Jennesses’ dinner
A.The family’s food was too different from German food.
B.The family talked while eating, which was impolite in her culture.
C.She could not understand the family’s conversation about sports.
D.The host parents asked her some uncomfortable personal questions.
5. What can we learn about the writer’s experience at the football game
A.She was frightened by the loud noise and left early.
B.She refused to join the crowd in shouting chants.
C.She slowly started to enjoy the lively atmosphere.
D.She thought the foam finger was a boring gift.
6. Which of the following words best describes Sarah, the host mom
A.Creative and rule-focused
B.Warm and open-minded
C.Cheerful and sports-loving
D.Patient and well-organized
7. Which saying best supports the main idea of the passage
A.When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
B.Two heads are better than one.
C.East or west, home is best.
D.Variety is the spice of life.

Dr. Marshall Rosenberg’s well-known book, Nonviolent Communication, stands as a practical and transformative guide designed to settle conflicts and build genuine relationships through improved communication. Rooted in the belief that all human beings share the same basic needs, this book offers a simple yet powerful model that works in various life situations, from personal relationships to workplace cooperation.
The core of the nonviolent communication (NVC) model lies in four key steps: observation, feeling, need, and request. Unlike judgmental language that causes anger, the first step of NVC encourages people to describe facts objectively without criticism. For example, instead of saying “You never listen to me,” one learns to state “I haven’t had a chance to share my ideas in our recent talks.” This shift from blame to observation helps reduce defensiveness and opens the door to understanding.
Next, delivering genuine feelings and identifying underlying needs are vital. The book teaches readers to distinguish between feelings (such as sadness, disappointment, or joy) and thoughts (like “I am being ignored”). By recognizing needs like respect, connection, or autonomy, individuals can communicate more sincerely. Finally, making clear, specific requests — rather than demands — encourages cooperation. A request like “Could we schedule a 10-minute chat tomorrow to discuss this ” is far more effective than “You need to talk to me about this.”
What makes this book particularly valuable is its wide applicability. It helps couples settle misunderstandings, colleagues cooperate more smoothly, and even strangers connect with empathy (共情). In a world often filled with division and judgement, NVC offers a path to bridge gaps by focusing on shared humanity rather than differences. It teaches us to replace criticism with curiosity, anger with understanding, and conflict with connection.
More than just a communication skill book, Nonviolent Communication is a guide to personal growth. It empowers readers to become more self-aware, manage emotions healthily, and develop deeper, more meaningful relationships. For anyone seeking to reduce conflict and build trust in their daily lives, this book is an irreplaceable resource that transforms the way we interact with others — and with ourselves.
8. Which best follows the first step of NVC model
A.“I hate your often being late.”
B.“Why can’t you come here earlier ”
C.“You shall be here 10 minutes earlier.”
D.“You have been late twice this week.”
9. What does the author recommend in communication
A.Expressing inner feelings.
B.Making direct demands.
C.Prioritising personal needs.
D.Requesting others’ respect.
10. What is a practical value of NVC
A.It helps bridge divisions.
B.It helps improve judgement.
C.It encourages to be more focused.
D.It encourages to notice difference.
11. Who is the book’s intended reader
A.People looking for human resources.
B.Individuals pursuing academic growth.
C.Those longing for better communication.
D.professionals needing short-term cooperation.

To celebrate the mobile game’s 10th anniversary, Honor of Kings is cooperating with the Sanxingdui Museum and famous film director Zhang Yimou to release Sanxingdui-inspired in-game skins — a series that transforms ancient bronze (青铜)relics into digital symbols. While enabling players to experience the lasting appeal of ancient bronze culture within the game, it also represents another step forward in the Sanxingdui Museum’s exploration of digital engagement.
According to Zhu Yarong, deputy director of the Sanxingdui management committee, the museum has been conducting 3D scanning and digital data collection of its artifacts (文物)since 2015, transforming static objects into lively, interactive experiences and continuously expanding the expressive possibilities of cultural heritage, committed to “bringing cultural relics to life” through the use of digital technologies. In 2023, the renewed Sanxingdui Museum officially opened, featuring more than 20 digital exhibits. The interactive galleries also feature a variety of smaller multimedia installations that have proved highly attractive. Beyond long-term exhibitions, the Sanxingdui Museum has also produced light-and-shadow shows and VR exhibitions, some of which have been presented overseas.
Zhu notes that one of the greatest challenges facing digital exhibitions today lies in talent development. Designers must understand history and culture, and also master the logic of rapidly evolving digital technologies.
“Technology develops very quickly, and audiences can easily experience aesthetic fatigue (审美疲劳),” she says. “This demands constant innovation while ensuring digital products are always designed around audience needs.”
Despite these challenges, Zhu believes digital exhibition forms remain essential in enriching gallery content, uncovering the stories behind the artifacts, and deepening engagement, which allows museums to go beyond the limits of time and space.
“Sanxingdui has already moved beyond the idea of being just an archaeological site or a collection of artifacts,” she adds. “It has become an important symbol of Chinese culture, and a major cultural IP, too. Our goal is to bring cultural relics to life,” Zhu says. “Through creative products and cross-media cooperations, we want to help Chinese culture reach a wider global audience.”
12. What does the cooperation mean to the museum
A.Links with foreign museums.
B.A way to attract more visitors.
C.Chances for more partnerships.
D.An advance in digital interaction.
13. What does the underlined word “static” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Rare and valuable.
B.Still and unchanging.
C.Lively and creative.
D.Cultural and historical.
14. What does Zhu Yarong think of digital exhibitions
A.They stay vital though challenged.
B.They need more fashion designers.
C.They should focus on time and space.
D.They require faster tech development.
15. What does the text mainly talk about
A.A bridge connecting games and cultures.
B.A channel for spreading ancient cultures.
C.An archaeological site becoming a cultural IP.
D.An ancient civilization joining digital ecosystem.

In London, people have turned a disused parking area into a community garden. They grow tomatoes, and even strawberries on weekends, and they gather to share their food and chat over cups of tea. This is urban gardening. ___16___
There are many reasons for the rise of urban gardening. One of the biggest is a desire for fresh, healthy food. Urban gardening also helps reduce anxiety and improve mood. Another benefit is its positive impact on the environment. ___17___ Urban gardens also provide habitats for animals like bees.
___18___. Space is limited in cities, so gardeners have to be creative. Some use special farming techniques, growing plants on walls or in some bottles. Others rent small areas in community gardens. Land pollution is another problem. In some cities, soil may have heavy metals or chemicals. To solve this, volunteers often test the land to make it safe for planting.
As urban gardening grows, it’s changing the way we think about cities. No longer just modern buildings, cities are becoming greener, more connected places. In Toronto, schools are using gardens to teach kids about nature and healthy eating. ___19___
For anyone interested in starting their own urban garden, the message is simple. ___20___ A few bottles in a little space in your home, a window box with plants, or a small area in a community garden is all it takes to join the movement. As the London gardeners say, “Growing food together isn’t just about vegetables — it’s about growing community too.”
A.It needs more time and money
B.As we know, plants can help clean the air
C.Of course, urban gardening has its challenges
D.You don’t need a great deal of space or experience
E.Some people don’t like to buy vegetables from markets

“John Tan! Wake up! You are late!” The loud voice of my mother rang in my ears. “Five more minutes...” I said sleepily, covering my ears with my pillow (枕头). I had a habit of being late for school every morning. Despite the repeated warnings of my discipline master and parents, I found it difficult to change.
“I have no time to drive you to school anymore. I need to get to work. Walk to school by yourself!” my mother said in annoyance as she hurried out of the door. As I was about to close my eyes again, realization hit me — Today I was taking my mathematics test! I glanced at the bedside clock. A minute before 7:30 am. “Oh no! I am going to be late!” I panicked as I jumped out of bed.
I got changed, grabbed my schoolbag and ran out of the house like a bolt of lightning. Just as I was about to run across the road, dark clouds filled the sky, appearing above like a heavy curtain. I dug in my schoolbag anxiously for an umbrella but to my regret, I had not packed one as I was late. Running now, I could see the school gate. Then, the heavens opened and I was wet from head to toe. I glanced at my watch. I was out of breath as I was ten minutes late for school!

五、书面表达(范文)
I rushed towards the examination hall, my heart pounding in my chest. I stood at the door, dripping wet and afraid to knock. Fortunately, the teacher allowed me in after seeing my terrible condition. I quickly took my seat and focused all my attention on the test paper. Though my clothes were wet and cold, I forced myself to calm down and finished every question carefully.
After the examination, I walked out of the hall with a mixture of relief and regret. I felt lucky to take the test, but deeply regretted my bad habit of staying in bed. That rainy morning taught me a valuable lesson. From then on, I set two alarms every night and got up early to avoid being late. I finally realized punctuality could save me from missing important chances in life.
