Boxing (拳击) has been practiced for centuries—it was even one of the sports in the original Olympic Games in ancient Greece. (1) Hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life participate in the sport every week. But why?The answer lies in the physical, mental and even social benefits boxing can bring.
Its help for our body is clear.Whether it's practicing with a hitting bag or facing another boxer, boxing can be a hard form of exercise and give a full-body workout. (2) And it can also increase anaerobic (无氧的) fitness—allowing someone to work out harder, for longer. These can,in turn, positively affect other aspects of physical well-being,like heart health and weight management.
(3) Boxing can also positively affect someone's mental well-being.Dr.Jessica Pinchbeck,Senior Lecturer in Sport and Fitness at the Open University, says that boxing can reduce anxiety and sadness.Exercising regularly is already widely known to be good for mental health, but boxing can also bring a sense of focus.
There is a third benefit to putting on boxing gloves (手套).Practicing boxing hits can be done alone,of course. (4) It also means working with others to train and stay safe.Dr.Gavin Williams,Senior Lecturer in Education at the Open University, says that this teamwork can create a sense of belonging. (5)
In short, boxing is more than just a sport. It's good for your body, calms your mind, and helps you connect with others. No wonder it has been popular for so long and loved by so many people.
A.It can improve our body strength.
B.But boxing is not just a one-person activity.
C.So the teamwork can make our society peaceful.
D.More recently, boxing has become popular in the UK.

①Take a look at the two shapes in the picture.Which one do you think is "kiki" and which one is "bouba"?This is part of a famous bouba-kiki experiment done in both America and India.
②In the experiment, people were shown two drawings. One had a rounded shape, and the other had a star-like shape.People had to name each of them with "bouba" or "kiki".Both of these words were not real words in any language and had no meaning.However,95% of people decided the rounded one was "bouba",and the star-like one was "kiki".
③The experiment shows our brains seem to connect sounds with shapes. The researchers believe the results have something to do with the mouth shapes we make when we say these words.Pronouncing "bouba" requires the mouth to make a rounded shape.Other examples of "rounded" sounds are oo in "room" and o in "wrote".An unrounded mouth shape is needed to make the sound of "kiki". "Unrounded" sounds require the lips (嘴唇) to be spread apart, like ee in "peek" or a in "had".
④Another explanation is that letters such as k or t are thought to have unrounded sounds because of their sharp (尖锐的) shapes.Letters like b or g have rounded shapes,so they are considered to have rounded and soft sounds.
⑤Understanding the bouba-kiki effect can lead to its possible use in fields like branding (品牌) and communication. For example,if a toy brand wants to show its softness and friendliness,it may follow the "bouba" effect and choose rounded shapes for the logo and rounded sounds for product names.Similarly,a technology company may turn to the "kiki" effect to show it's sharp and powerful. So next time you want to design a logo for a school event or name a product, consider whether it feels more like "bouba" or "kiki"!
19.How does the writer begin the text?______
A. By listing numbers. B. By telling a joke.
C. By giving examples. D. By asking a question.
20.Why do people connect "bouba" with rounded shapes?______
A. Because the mouth forms a round shape when saying it.
B. Because it sounds the same as "room" and "wrote".
C. Because it makes people think of soft and friendly things.
D. Because the letter "b" has a very round shape.
21.Which brand best shows the "kiki" effect?______
A. Loops. B. Wubbo. C. Teeki. D. Bugaloo.
22.What is the correct structure of the text?______
A.
B.
C.
D.

A hundred years ago,it was difficult for people to communicate over long distances.Messages to far-off places were carried on horseback. Then Samuel Morse invented the electric telegraph and the Morse code(密码).
Morse code is a series of dots and dashes. The dashes are about three times longer than the dots. Here is the code for the letters of the alphabet(字母表).
The Morse code also includes codes for numbers and punctuation signs(标点符号).Like texting,it also has groups of letters that stand for phrases. For example, the letters CUL stand for"see you later".And the famous SOS signal stands for "save our souls".
The electric telegraph could send messages using electricity. The worker at one end used a machine to tap out a special code for each letter of the alphabet. The system changed the tapping into electrical movements and sent them to another place. Then they were changed back into the code at the place. The code was printed on a paper tape which was set on another machine. The worker on the receiving end used the code to change the message back into words Later, workers learned to translate the code just by listening.
Messages can be sent by Morse code using light too.A flashing light can send the same dots and dashes and they can be translated by someone watching.
Today Morse code is used mostly by radio operators. Some navigation beacons(导航信标) like lighthouses still identify themselves using Morse code.Pilots flying planes by instrument(仪表) use these beacons to determine their plane's location. But perhaps the most exciting use of Morse code is helping people with disabilities communicate. There have been cases in which people have learned to communicate using their eyelids to blink messages using Morse code.Or they have used a finger to tap out messages.
23.Why did Samuel Morse invent the Morse code?______
A. Because there might not be enough horses to carry messages.
B. Because modern electronic products were not invented at that time.
C. Because communication wasn't easy for people who lived far away.
D. Because it was not easy for people to use the electric telegraph.
24.What does thecode""stand for?______
A. LUCK. B. LOV C. LIK D. LOS
25.Which one is the correct order of sending a message by electric telegraph?______
①The code is printed on paper tape.
②A worker taps out a code for each letter.
③The system changes tapping into electrical movements.
④The electrical movements are sent to another place.
⑤Another worker changes the code back into words.
A. ②③①④⑤ B. ②③④①⑤ C. ③②①④⑤ D. ③②④⑤①
26.Now people use Morse code in many ways EXCEPT______ .
A. sending secret messages using light
B. identifying lighthouses on the sea

Growing up in America as a child of first-generation Chinese immigrants(移民).I was used to straddling(横跨) two worlds. But as I grew older, the Chinese side lost ground, inch by inch. While I happily accepted the bills in red envelopes that adults gave to children for Lunar New Year,I didn't feel connected to the culture.
Before my children were born,I had already decided that I would teach them Mandarin.I felt that they should be able to speak the language of their grandparents, the first language their mother met.
Parenting books advised narrating your actions while with your baby,so I started digging out long-buried words:"ball,""eat""sleep,""play."However,as this exercise continued, the gaps in my Mandarin became more obvious(明显的).One morning, when my daughter asked"What is the word for 'arm?"I panicked.Had I already reached the boundaries of my knowledge?
Luckily, these days the ready availability of Chinese language media—from books to television shows to music-is a much-needed tool to parents like me.
The first time I stepped into the local library in my Bay Area hometown,I was amazed to find a well-stocked(贮藏量多的) Chinese section. The tale of the Monkey King soon caught my daughter's imagination.
When I see my son chat with his grandfather in Mandarin or when my daughter insists on fish for Lunar New Year, the time spent reading all those books closely feels well-spent.
My youngest child recited Li Bai's"Thoughts on a Silent Night" for the Moon Festival performance at his preschool last fall. For generations of Chinese children,it's the first piece of literature they memorize. My son's voice rang out with confidence and his arms swept up to indicate the moon above.Joy and wonder fell on my father's face as he listened to the familiar poem from the mouth of his grandson:the poem that had been spoken by my father and my grandparents when they were students in China, and by countless boys and girls before that.
