Throughout the past year, we followed some interesting new inventions in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Here is a look back at some notable AI developments in 2022.
Meta’s speech-to-speech translation
Facebook’s parent Meta said it had built a technology tool to directly translate between English and the Hokkien language, a spoken language without a widely used written form.
Meta said it trained its AI models on written text examples from Mandarin Chinese. In addition, developers used an encoding tool designed to compare spoken Hokkien to similar English text.
Method to identify Parkinson’s disease
Researchers announced a new AI method to identify Parkinson’s disease. The system works by measuring a person’s breathing patterns during sleep. With just one night of sleep, the AI system was able to correctly identify Parkinson’s up to 86 percent of the time. With 12 nights of data, the rate went up to 95 percent.
Tool to interpret pig emotions
Researchers announced they had created a technology tool that uses pig sounds to interpret different emotions.
The tool is based on thousands of recordings collected from more than 400 pigs throughout their lives. The scientists developed an AI-driven approach to identify a series of emotions pigs could be experiencing. It is expected to lead to further systems farmers can use to improve the productivity and well-being of their animals.
Tool to fill in missing words in ancient writings
Researchers — led by Alphabet’s AI company Deep Mind — said they developed an AI system to help fill in missing words in ancient writings. The tool, called Ithaca, is designed to help historians repair the writings and identify when and where they were written.
The team said that when historians work on their own, the success rate for repairing damaged writings is about 25 percent. But when humans teamed up with Ithaca to assist in their work, the success rate jumped to 72 percent.

Chen Jianfeng, a 53-year-old Chinese engineer, has spent the past nine years at the Caculo-Cabaca Hydropower Project in Angola, one of Angola’s key energy projects. His decades of hands-on experience have established him as a master in the field. Arriving in Angola during the project’s challenging early phase, Chen faced a critical issue: a severe shortage of proficient workers and limited access to technical resources in the remote area. He swiftly initiated intensive professional training programs.
“In the beginning, local workers had no awareness of material dangers. Safety consciousness was very low,” Chen recounted, citing an astonishing incident where a local worker casually placed bags of explosives on the ground. “I stopped him immediately and patiently explained the risks, emphasizing that they must be handled gently and never thrown so casually,” he added. Training methods have since evolved significantly. “We break down complex procedures into simple steps and use Portuguese mnemonics (memory aids). Now, we can train a competent operator within a month,” Chen said.
Recognizing communication as vital, Chen dedicated himself to learning Portuguese, the country’s official language. “Sometimes the longest distance isn’t the miles between hemispheres, but me gesturing frantically in front of you while you remain utterly confused!” Chen remarked on the initial language barrier. He carried a notebook constantly, jotting down new words and phrases learned from local workers, diligently reviewing them each night. Within two months, Chen was proficient enough to assign tasks to Angolan staff in Portuguese. His practical communication skills proved highly effective.
“Language learning isn’t about perfection,” Chen said, “It’s about being bine it with gestures for maximum efficiency.” Beyond Portuguese for daily operations, Chen also uses English to communicate with project owners and supervisors. He now routinely greets local workers on site in Portuguese every morning. Chen stressed the critical importance of clear communication and genuinely resolving issues for Angolan staff. “If an employee reports a payroll error, I verify it with HR immediately and ensure it’s corrected,” he said. This consistent approach has earned Chen deep trust among his Angolan colleagues, who frequently hail him as “our good captain from China”.
4. What were the two challenges Chen faced at the early stage of the project
A.Lack of funding and remote location.
B.Shortfall of skilled labor and technical resources.
C.Outdated equipment and harsh climate conditions.
D.Ineffective training methods and language barriers.
5. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 mainly suggest
A.Gesturing alone is insufficient for precise communication.
B.Cultural differences are the toughest problem in the overseas project.
C.Physical distance is no longer a barrier in modern engineering projects.
D.Language barriers can create more obstacles than geographical separation.
6. Which statement best captures Chen’s philosophy on workplace communication
A.English is essential for daily task assignment.
B.Language accuracy should be given the first priority.
C.Being understood is more important than being perfect.
D.Verbal communication alone is sufficient for most situations
7. What can be inferred about Chen’s success in Angola
A.It reflects China’s superior training system.
B.It mainly results from his technical expertise.
C.It depends on his willingness to work with local staff.
D.It shows English’s importance in international projects.

Cycling is an extremely healthy sport. This low-impact exercise can strengthen your legs, improve your balance, and boost your overall fitness effectively, making it suitable for people of any age.
Beyond physical benefits, cycling is also remarkably good for the brain. As Healthline points out, riding a bike helps reduce feelings of stress and anxiety by promoting the release of endorphins, the body’s natural mood lifters. And new research reveals even more significant cognitive (认知) advantages.
A study published in the journal JAMA Network Open tracked 479,723 participants over a 13-year follow-up period. Its key findings linked active travel modes of transportation — especially cycling — to better brain health and a significantly lower risk of dementia (痴呆症).
Participants were asked about their daily travel habits excluding work commutes (通勤) and divided into four groups: those using passive transport like buses or trains; regular walkers; people who mixed walking with other methods; and those who rode bikes or combined cycling with other forms of travel. The results showed that regular cyclists had a 19 percent lower risk of dementia and a 22 percent lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease compared to other groups. Additionally, brain imaging of the participants confirmed that cyclists had a larger hippocampus — a brain region crucial for memory and learning — which is a clear indication of healthy cognitive function.
Active travel like cycling is accessible to most people, requiring no specialized equipment beyond a bike, and its benefits for older adults are particularly tremendous. Liangkai Chen, PhD, lead author of the study, notes that promoting cycling as daily transport — even mixed with other modes — could be a practical and low-cost strategy to reduce dementia risk and preserve brain structure.
Chen plans to further research how cycling frequency and duration influence brain health, plus the effects of changing active travel behaviour. This is especially important for seniors, as small lifestyle changes bring great brain health benefits. Clifford Segil, an adult neurologist, adds middle-age lifestyle adjustments to prevent dementia are valuable, as proven neuroprotective methods remain rare.
8. What did the study in JAMA Network Open find about regular cyclists
A.They had a higher risk of dementia.
B.They showed better cognitive function.
C.They owned healthier bodies than others.
D.They depended more on passive transport.
9. What is the focus of Paragraph 4
A.Confirmation of the research.
B.Methods of dividing participants.
C.The process and results of the study.
D.Comparisons between different travel groups.
10. What does the underlined word “tremendous” in Paragraph 5 mean
A.Massive
B.Slight.
C.Uncertain.
D.Temporary.
11. What can we know from Clifford Segil’s words
A.Seniors should avoid changing their daily habits.
B.Neuroprotective methods are now widely available.
C.Middle-age adjustments may help protect brain health.
D.Lifestyle changes are the only way to prevent dementia.

Researchers recently studied some newly discovered dark rocks from Mars and concluded that they were likely laid down from the air, potentially as volcanic ash billions of years ago. However, no volcanoes have been discovered at the site to date. “There are no known volcanoes at this site, which means the ash probably came from hundreds or maybe even thousands of kilometers away,” Emma Harris, first author of the study, said in a statement. “It likely came from a really explosive volcano which launched ash high into the atmosphere and the ash travelled this huge distance before settling at this site.”
Researchers found there were strange light-coloured spots on the rocks, each surrounded by dark material containing iron and phosphate (磷酸盐). “These spots are a big surprise,” said David Flannery at the Queensland University of Technology. “On Earth, these types of features on rocks are often associated with the fossilized record of microbes (微生物) living in the subsurface.” That is because the type of chemical reaction that creates these sorts of spots on Earth rocks can also provide useful energy for microbes.
In the same area where the rocks are located, certain organic compounds that are often considered the building blocks of life were also found. All of these together could be taken as a sign of bygone Martian microbes, but it is far from a smoking gun. “We should be cautiously excited and keep sensible,” said the researchers.
To learn more about these rocks, the study authors mapped a region of 19,300 square miles using data from the Context Camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, a NASA satellite. The dark rocks are theorized to have once covered the whole site, but are now only found in smaller areas. The researchers propose that this is because the ash was preserved in areas of lower altitude inside impact craters (撞击坑), where it mixed with groundwater. “When the ash fell on these patches of water, it made them stickier and then more solid. The rest of the ash which landed on the surrounding rocks may have just blown away and never preserved,” Harris said.
12. Why did Emma Harris mention “no known volcanoes at this site”
A.To explain the rock’s special colour.
B.To make a guess about the source of ash.
C.To prove the site has always been inactive.
D.To indicate the rocks are formed by impacts.
13. Why were researchers surprised at the light-coloured spots
A.They appeared in smaller regions than expected.
B.They contained unknown minerals on Mars.
C.They contradicted past Martian geography findings.
D.They may involve reactions linked to the Earth’s microbial activity.
14. What does the underlined phrase “far from a smoking gun” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.A direct cause.
B.Not a problem.
C.Not strong evidence.
D.Obvious misunderstanding.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Impact Craters with Traces of Water on Mars
B.Martian Ash: Clues to Ancient Volcanic Activity
C.Martian Subsurface: Proof of Complex Ecosystems
D.Rocks from Mars with Possible Signs of Ancient Life

57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Since I stepped into Senior Two, life has been a non-stop cycle of homework, exams and fierce competition. Buried under piles of papers and burning the midnight oil almost every night, I kept telling myself that I must work harder to realize my dream of entering a top university. I tried every method known: making detailed timetables, reciting vocabulary till midnight, and redoing wrong questions. However, despite my persistent efforts, the results were far from satisfactory.
Time and time again, I received disappointing test scores. The red marks on the paper were like sharp knives, piercing my heart and making me feel completely defeated. One Friday afternoon, after getting yet another discouraging school report, I locked myself in my room. Tears rolled down my cheeks uncontrollably as I stared at the low grades. I began to doubt my own ability, wondering if I was actually smart enough to make it. “Maybe I should just give up,” I whispered to myself, feeling exhausted and hopeless.
Just when I was drowning in self-pity, my deskmate, Li Hua, noticed my absence from the classroom. He tracked me down at home and knocked gently on my door. When I finally opened it, with red and swollen eyes, he didn’t say a word of blame. Instead, he handed me a cup of hot milk and sat beside me quietly. After letting me calm down for a moment, he shared his own struggle with math, admitting that he had also wanted to quit many times. Then, looking me straight in the eyes, he said softly but firmly:
“The process is more important than the result. Keep going, and you will see the change sooner or later.” These simple yet powerful words were like a ray of sunshine, breaking through the dark clouds of my mind. They touched my heart deeply and pulled me out of the abyss of negativity. I took a deep breath, wiped away my tears, and silently made up my mind to hold on to my dream.

六、读后续写参考范文
Paragraph 1
I made a detailed study plan and started to change my learning methods. Instead of staying up late blindly, I arranged reasonable rest time every day to keep energetic in class. I stopped copying wrong answers mechanically and began to sort out my mistakes by types to find my weak points. I also turned to teachers and classmates for advice whenever I met confusing problems. Every day I stuck to the plan firmly and focused on small improvements rather than being anxious about final scores.
Paragraph 2
With my continuous efforts, I finally made significant progress. In the next monthly exam, my total score jumped a lot, and every subject got better grades. Looking at the paper without many terrible red marks, I smiled with relief. I realized Li Hua’s words were totally right. Success never comes overnight, and every tiny effort counts. From then on, I kept a positive attitude towards study and would never give up my dream easily again.
