Jensen Huang has worked hard, overcome challenges and used his life experiences to build one of the most important tech companies.
Huang was born in Tainan in 1963, but his father’s work took the family to Thailand when he was a child. Then, when Huang was 9, his parents sent him and his brother to the United States due to political tensions in Thailand.
Unexpectedly, Huang was sent to a reform school for troubled youth. This may not sound beneficial, but Huang appreciated it. He says, “We worked really hard, and the kids were really tough.” The toughness and work ethic (道德) he developed have served him well.
After graduating from college, Huang earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering. While being a student, he worked as a waiter. Before he took the job, he was very shy, but waiting tables forced him to speak to people. That helped him to get over his shyness. He also learned the importance of admitting mistakes.
On his 30th birthday, Huang and two engineering friends founded his company, NVIDIA. They thought it was likely that computers would soon need more powerful technology to display graphics (图像).So NVIDIA produced such hardware: the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) in 1999.The first application of this technology was to video games, but it has also been used in other areas. Recently, GPUs have played a key role in the development of AI.
Huang’s success is attributed to a number of factors including hard work and refusal to give up. But the most important characteristic is his willingness to take risks and learn from failure. This requires humility (谦逊) and honesty, which enables him to recognize and correct mistakes. Huang encourages these attitudes in his employees, which are partly responsible for the company’s success.
Today, at the age of 62, Huang is the longest-serving CEO of a major technology company. He does not intend to stop anytime soon.
4. How did Huang react to being admitted to a reform school
A.He was shocked at first but settled for it.
B.He took it seriously and made full use of it.
C.He set a goal to get prepared for his tech career.
D.He regretted the reform school but didn’t say so.
5. Why did Huang and his friends decide to develop the GPU
A.Because video game companies placed a large order of it.
B.Because AI was in great need of the hardware at that time.
C.Because stronger graphics hardware might be needed soon.
D.Because no other groups were developing similar technology.
6. Which may replace the underlined part “attributed to” in paragraph 6
A.due to
B.essential to
C.identical to
D.compared to
7. What is the text mainly about
A.GPU technology’s invention and wide application.
B.Huang’s experiences and qualities leading to his success.
C.NVIDIA’s development and impact on the tech industry.
D.The significance of hard work and risk-taking for a firm.

India has been one of the world’s largest producers and consumers of wheat and rice. “We used to know when it would rain and for how long, and we planted our seeds (种子) accordingly,” said P. Ravinder Reddy, a former Indian soldier who turned to farming on his family’s land 16 years ago. “Now, many times the seeds don’t grow either because there’s too much rain or it’s completely dry.”
Some are taking to what is called natural farming — techniques like planting crops alongside trees and other plants that can protect crops from wind and some extreme weather— to deal with climate change. But that can mean reduced yields (产量), so India’s government is promoting the use of new varieties of rice seeds that don’ t decrease yields.
According to a United Nations report released earlier this year, more than 700 million people went hungry last year and over a third of the global population is unable to afford a healthy diet. Apart from India, other programs including a United States government program and privately funded projects are helping develop new seeds that can adapt to climate change in Africa, Central America and other Asian countries.
“We really need these seeds to deal with these multiple issues created by global warming,” said Ashok Kumar Singh, former director of New Delhi-based Indian Agriculture Research Institute and a scientist who specializes in plant genetics and breeding. Singh has overseen the creation of multiple successful rice varieties to resist various plant diseases. And his organization, with funding from the government, has released more than 2,000 seed varieties in the last decade.
“Ensuring that farmers know about such seeds, can afford them and are trained to use them properly is as important as creating the seeds,” said Aditi Mukherji, director for climate change adaptation and mitigation at the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research and an author of several United Nations climate reports.
8. What can we learn from P. Ravinder Reddy’s words
A.He has been a soldier for sixteen years.
B.He has an approach to helping seeds grow.
C.The climate in India has become extreme.
D.It is easy to predict when it will rain in India.
9. What is a consequence of applying natural farming
A.Yield decrease.
B.Energy shortage.
C.Land loss.
D.Environmental harm.
10. What does the author want to show by mentioning 700 million people
A.The rising population around the world.
B.The right way of keeping a healthy diet.
C.The importance of a United Nations report.
D.The necessity for developing tougher seeds.
11. What is Aditi Mukherji’s suggestion for the governments
A.Training their farmers.
B.Creating more jobs.
C.Raising the price of seeds.
D.Ensuring personal security.

Global warming is mainly caused by the increased emission of greenhouse gases, in particular carbon dioxide produced by power stations that use huge amounts of fossil fuel to supply us with electricity. These greenhouse gases have an average lifetime in the atmosphere of 50 to 200 years. This means that even if we stopped the emission of greenhouse gases completely tomorrow, global warming would still continue for decades to come.
The International Energy Agency(IEA) records the energy consumption worldwide and produces a forecast for the next 25 years. In their last energy outlook published in 2006, IEA predicted a strong increase of the carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 as a consequence of the increasing demand for energy worldwide. Additionally, IEA investigated to which extent the above mentioned emissions of CO could be prevented if politics applied strict measures. One of many measures investigated was massive facilitation and stimulation for building additional nuclear power plants (核电站).
Nuclear energy is used to generate electrical power without any sort of fossil fuel involved in the process. Therefore, CO emission can indeed be reduced, if electricity power plants driven by fossil fuels were replaced by nuclear power plants. Yet, the application of nuclear power is highly risky and problematic; and so the problem of CO2 emissions must not be looked at independently of all other risks and problems.
Some critics claim that nuclear energy’s emissions can compare to those of fossil-fuels’ when the life cycle impacts of nuclear power are considered. Although nuclear power plants do not release greenhouse gases when generating electricity, certain processes used to build and fuel the plants do, such as transporting the fuel to the plants in trucks. However, dozens of studies show that nuclear plants’ life cycle impacts are actually more comparable to those of renewable energy, such as wind and solar, and far less than those of coal-fired or natural gas-fired power plants.
In the end we can say that nuclear energy could significantly contribute to reducing the cause of global warming. Having said that, it can also be a highly risky option if we shut the eyes to the many risks of nuclear power.
12. What can be inferred about greenhouse gases from paragraph 1
A.They can be restricted within a short time.
B.They will reduce people’s average lifetime.
C.They will keep increasing for decades to come.
D.They have a lasting impact on global warming.
13. What is the purpose of the IEA’s investigation
A.To analyze the impact of global warming.
B.To identify ways to reduce CO emissions.
C.To predict future energy consumption worldwide.
D.To promote construction of nuclear power plants.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards nuclear energy
A.Tolerant.
B.Objective.
C.Disapproving.
D.Conservative.
15. What is the best title for the text
A.Solutions to Dealing with CO Emissions
B.IEA Energy Outlook for Decades to Come
C.Is Nuclear Energy the Answer to Global Warming
D.How Can Human Beings Survive Global Warming

Melati and Isabel deeply love their home on the island, surrounded by tropical rain forests, green fields, and a vast ocean. Enjoying a swim at their local beach was once a daily pleasure for them. But when Melati was fifteen, and Isabel just ten, the sisters started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters near their borne. More often than not, plastic bags would be around them as they swam and some were scattered on the beach. They got really upset about that.
Melati didn’t think much about it until one day her teacher gave a lesson on some world heroes. Each of those people had sparked movements of positive changes in the world. They believed in the impact they could have and they did inspire more people to do something meaningful. After school, Melati walked home slowly in silence, concerned about the vast amount of plastic rubbish on the beach. The heroes crossed her mind. If they could do it, we could do it too, she thought. The idea lit her up. She couldn’t wait to share what she thought with Isabel and quickened her pace.
“So many plastic bags around! The beach is dirty and messy! It’s so terrible! We have lost the clean and beautiful beach. Can’t we do something to get it back ” Melati said heartily. Isabel felt a bit puzzled at what to do, but she also had a strong desire to do something. Picturing a beach as fascinating as before in mind, the pair jumped with joy.
They talked a lot, anxious to know how Dad and Mom would respond to their ideas. That night when the family sat by the dinner table, the sisters eagerly got their ideas across. While Mom and Dad listened to the girls carefully, their eyes shone. “How amazing that would be! We are so proud of you!” Dad exclaimed. Mom came up, gave them a thumb up and hugged the sisters.

Melati and Isabel decided to make a positive impact straight away. First, they made posters to call on people to protect the beach and put them up in their neighborhood and school. Then they organized a beach-cleaning activity, inviting classmates and neighbors to join them. Every weekend, they worked together to pick up plastic rubbish and classify it properly. They also gave short speeches to pass on the idea of reducing plastic use. Gradually, more and more volunteers joined their team, and the beach became cleaner little by little.
One month later, Melati received a call from the local newspaper. The journalist heard about their voluntary work and planned to interview them. In the interview, the two girls shared their experience and stressed the importance of protecting the marine environment. Their story inspired more local residents to pay attention to beach protection. From then on, regular beach-cleaning activities became a tradition in their town. The sisters finally realized that everyone can make a difference with small but continuous efforts.
