Study at the right time each day
The first step in getting better in English is to study at the right time each day. Do you wake up early and study when the house is quiet Or do you like to stay up late and study before you go to sleep Choose the proper time to study English every week. Make a study plan for each week. Here is an example of using our website to improve your listening and speaking skills:
Monday: Watch Let's Learn English; practice the conversation with a friend
Tuesday: Watch English in a Minute; teach the new expressions to family or friends
Wednesday: Watch English at the Movies; write a note to a friend about the expressions

Every one of us may have been hurt by others — either by their words or actions. The best way to deal with the problem is to “forgive and forget”.
“It is well established that learning to forgive others can have positive benefits for one’s physical and mental health,” Saima Noreen, a scientist at the University of St. Andrews, UK, told the Huffington Post.
Recently, Noreen and her research team have found one more reason that you should stick to this principle — forgiving somebody who has hurt you makes it easier for you to forget the unhappy memory, according to their new study.
In the study, researchers asked volunteers to read descriptions of 40 different situations that contained bad actions such as stealing, lying and cheating. Imagining being the victims (受害者) , volunteers then had to decide whether they would be able to forgive. Two weeks later, volunteers took part in a memory test. In the test, they were shown a series of words related to the situations they had read about and then were asked to recall certain ones.
The results showed that people were less likely to remember the details of the unpleasant experiences if they had found forgiveness in their hearts. In contrast, if they hadn’t forgiven the mistake, they could always remember what had happened.
However, forgiving someone who has hurt you is always easier said than done. So Noreen hopes that one day in the near future research will give rise to powerful therapeutic (有疗效的) tools that will enable people to “forgive and forget” more effectively.
4. What have Noreen and her team found recently
A.They have found no reason to hurt other people.
B.A memory test is necessary to help people forgive.
C.An unpleasant experience can be easily forgotten.
D.Forgiving helps us to forget unhappy memories.

A.It’s impossible to forgive someone.
B.Noreen has finished her research report.
C.There may be some therapeutic tools soon.
D.The therapeutic tools have been invented.

Ashley Liberto and her dog Bentley have been inseparable since she got him eight years ago. When Bentley had trouble walking a few years ago, Liberto was worried. “I took him to the pet hospital. He was diagnosed (诊断) with an amputated (截肢) right elbow and would need a prosthetic leg,” Liberto says. Luckily, the surgery (外科手术) was a success.
After Bentley started moving again on three legs, Liberto decided to get a custom prosthetic leg (定制的假肢) for him. When she saw the cost of custom dog prosthetics, the teacher at Providence Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina reached out to some of her former students for help in finding a more affordable choice.
Providence Day School has a class focused on computer-aided design (计算机辅助设计) and 3D printing. The teacher, Todd Johnson, says, “It’s an introductory level class that teaches students to make basic shapes using the technology. But when Liberto suggested trying to make a prosthetic leg for her dog, the students were excited to help and try something new.”
“I thought it was a chance for the students to see a real-world application of what they were learning at school. I knew once the students started thinking about it seriously, they would come up with excellent designs,” Johnson says.
The class broke up into small groups to come up with designs for Bentley. Team leader Brandon Hollis and his group came up with the winning design. Hollis’ group spent weeks creating a prosthetic leg for Bentley. “It fit way better than I could have hoped for. It still needs some small changes, and then it should fit perfectly,” Hollis says.
The students hope to have a finished custom and comfortable prosthetic leg for Bentley in the next few weeks. Even though the class has ended, the young designers have continued the project on their own time.
8. What happened to Bentley
A.He was hit by a car.
B.He had a terrible illness.
C.He got his right elbow amputated.
D.He got separated from his owner.
9. What did Liberto do for Bentley
A.She provided some students to play with him.
B.She tried to get a custom prosthetic leg for him.
C.She gave him some walking training.
D.She found a new home for him.
10. How did the students feel about making a prosthetic leg
A.It was a piece of cake to them.
B.They were excited to try something new.
C.They didn’t take it seriously.
D.It was too hard for them to finish.
11. What does Johnson expect of his students
A.They can put classroom knowledge into real practice.
B.They can think carefully about what they want to learn.
C.They can pay some attention to animal protection.
D.They can develop new 3D printing technology.
12. What is Hollis and his group’s plan for the next few weeks
A.Sharing their design with others.
B.Offering free design courses.
C.Improving their design to fit Bentley perfectly.
D.Introducing a new design.

Federal scientists have started testing migratory birds (候鸟) for signs of a dangerous bird flu that could show up on this continent this spring.
The testing of shorebirds began Wednesday at an Anchorage coastal wildlife refuge (藏身处), said Bruce Woods, spokesman with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
It is the first sampling of a summer-long project to swab (用拭子取液体) birds for bird flu throughout the state. Nationwide, the goal is to sample 75,000 to 100,000 wild birds. In Alaska, about $ 4 million in federal money will be paid to study about 15,000 birds, Woods said.
“We had some success in catching some of the target species,” Woods said Thursday.
More than 40 species of waterfowl and shorebirds are considered susceptible to infection by a highly pathogenic (致病的) H5N1 bird flu virus that’s killed more than 100 people, in other parts of the world, mostly in Asia.
Scientists will only test birds in the Anchorage area through early next week. “In this location, it’s very brief. Birds go through and they’re gone,” he said.
To screen the birds for the deadly virus, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Alaska’s Fish and Game Department also are setting up more than 50 remote backcountry camps accessible mainly by float planes or boats.
Many birds will be tested and released, while others killed during seasonal hunts will be tested after they have died.
Alaska is an ideal bird flu laboratory because it’s at the crossroads of migratory pathways for birds flying between the United States and other countries. Some of these birds arrive in Alaska each year from Asia, reports AP.
13. Which of the following is wrong
A.Over 50 remote backcountry camps are being built.
B.More than 100 people have died of H5N1 bird flu virus.
C.In Alaska, the goal to swab birds for bird flu is 75,000 to 100,000 wild birds.
D.Around 15,000 birds will be studied with the money provided by the federal government.
14. What can we infer from the passage
A.Only killed birds will be tested.
B.Asia is a more serious area hit by H5N1 virus.
C.The scientists there have no experience to catch the birds.
D.As many as 50 species of waterfowl and shorebird are infected by H5N1 bird flu virus.
15. What makes Alaska an ideal bird flu laboratory
A.Its special geographic location.
B.Its climate.
C.The birds there.
D.Its environment.
16. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.How are migratory birds tested for bird flu
B.Bird Flu Testing Kicks Off in Alaska
C.Alaska, an ideal bird flu laboratory
D.The Harm of H5N1 Bird Flu Virus

That day, the weather was very hot, and I was so nervous that I was unable to keep still and think calmly. My friend John and I were discussing a problem. I thought this was the right thing to do, but he held a different opinion.
In the middle of our discussion, he made ink from his pen drop onto my new notebook by accident. I was very angry and shouted, “Why did you do that ” As I spoke, I deliberately spilled ink from my pen onto his book. “You did it on purpose!” he said loudly. At that moment, he was filled with anger, his face burning red, eyebrows tightly wrinkled. Suddenly, he swept my things off the desk onto the floor. Seeing this, I flew into a rage and knocked his books down too, yelling, “We are not friends any more!” “Fine! You’re the one who ends our friendship!” he shouted like a lion. I grabbed my things and rushed away at once.
From that day on, every time I spotted him, I would take another path to avoid him. When we met by chance, he seemed to want to say something, yet I ran off without waiting for him to speak.
Since the quarrel, I kept reflecting on myself, realizing I was also at fault, yet I lacked the courage to apologize to him. I knew he didn’t mean to stain my notebook, but I intentionally ruined his book. I blamed myself deeply all the time.

One day, I suddenly heard that John was going to study in another school. My heart sank the moment I heard the news. I realized I would lose my best friend forever if I didn’t say sorry immediately. Without hesitation, I rushed to find John after class. Seeing him walking alone, I stepped forward nervously and apologized sincerely for my rude behavior that day. I admitted I was wrong to spill ink on his book and avoided him all the time.
I was so happy that I shed tears of delight. John smiled and told me he had also felt regretful for his impulsive actions. He accepted my apology readily. We promised to cherish our friendship and solve disagreements calmly later. Before he left, we exchanged small gifts as memories. This experience taught me that true friendship needs understanding and brave apologies.
