In the late 1980s, Stephanie Garber was driving through downtown Silver Spring, MD, when a large pickup truck hit her car. She wasn’t injured, but the other driver was annoyed, claiming the accident was Garber’s fault. And her car was completely destroyed.
Garber stood on the sidewalk, waiting for rescue to arrive. As she watched her car blocking traffic in the middle of the morning rush hour, Garber couldn’t help crying. “I was standing there. I was anxious and nervous. And I felt guilty about keeping the traffic stopped,” Garber said. “So, I really was not myself.” All of a sudden, a professionally dressed woman approached her. The woman appeared to be on her way to work and she was holding a cup of hot tea from the nearby coffee shop.
Garber recalled, “She handed it to me and said, ‘Maybe this will help.’ And when I looked at her, I just felt such kindness coming my way at a time when I needed it.” They smiled at each other and Garber thought she told the woman thank you, though she’s not sure. Then the woman went on her way. Garber recalled drinking the entire cup of tea. “Actually, I’ve never liked tea at all,” she said. “But I drank every drop and I felt her sympathy coming through with each swallow.”
The next morning, during rush hour, Garber drove a rental car back to the same spot downtown, hoping to find the woman and thank her again. But the woman wasn’t there. Garber held on to the small tag (标签) from the tea bag for about 15 years as a way to remember the woman’s act of generosity.
“I still remember it. I tell all my friends I never forget the kindness,” Garber said. “And this might have seemed like a very small kindness, but it meant a lot.”

Andrewsarchus mongoliensis is a large meat-eating animal that walked on hooves (蹄子). It has confused scientists who study ancient life for over 100 years. This special creature was first discovered in Inner Mongolia in 1923. Researchers have studied its huge and well-preserved skull, which is more than 2.7 feet long. The skull has strong teeth that can easily break bones, as well as powerful mouth muscles.
However, scientists have found only a few fossils: the complete skull, some broken jaws and worn teeth. Because of the limited fossils, experts still cannot decide its true body size or correct place in the development of mammals (哺乳动物). People once believed it was the largest meat-eating animal that ever lived on land.
Over the years, scientists’ opinions about Andrewsarchus have changed many times. At first, they thought it was related to thick-headed pig-like animals. Later, some believed it was similar to wolf-like animals or even an early kind of whale living on land. But none of these ideas have been fully proved, as there are not enough complete fossils.
A 2023 study suggested that Andrewsarchus might be close to early pig-like animals that ate both plants and meat. But some scientists say similar body parts may come from similar living environments, not close blood relationship.
Today, Andrewsarchus still remains an enigma to be solved. Although experts know it was huge and could break bones, the exact shape of its head, the length of its legs, and whether it walked on two feet or four remain unknown. Its real body structure will not be clear until more fossils are found in the future.
8. What is a feature of Andrewsarchus
A.It had powerful teeth to break bones.
B.It could run faster than many animals.
C.It was a small meat-eating animal.
D.It had a small skull.
9. What makes experts have trouble in learning more about Andrewsarchus
A.Its wrong position in the mammal tree.
B.Its unusual way of living.
C.Its skull of little research value.
D.Its limited fossils.
10. What do some scientists think of Andrewsarchus
A.It was a kind of large pure hunter.
B.It mainly hunted large animals for food.
C.It may be related to early pig-like animals.
D.It had the same body form as living mammals.
11. What does the underlined word “enigma” in the last paragraph mean
A.A secret or something not understood.
B.A huge meat-eating animal.
C.A special kind of fossil.
D.A new scientific discovery.

Although gratitude is often top of mind around the holidays, child development experts say this season is really a reminder that thankfulness works best as a daily, year-round practice, one that can meaningfully support children’s emotional health.
“As children regularly practice noticing small, good things, they’re building neural (神经系统的) paths that help them shift attention away from stress and toward positive aspects of their experience,” children’s music artist, author and mindfulness educator Kira Willey said. Over time, she said, those repeated moments help children “find good ground in all kinds of situations, even when things feel confusing”.
As concerns about youth mental health continue, experts say gratitude remains one of the simplest and most accessible tools families can use to support kids’ emotional recovery. For many families, gratitude has become a practical strategy for easing day-to-day stress.
Janine Marcello, a mom from Rhode Island, said that her family began a nightly gratitude check-in when her two daughters were struggling with uncertainty. “It wasn’t anything difficult,” Marcello said. “We’d just sit and go around saying one thing we appreciated that day. At first they rolled their eyes, but after a few weeks they were reminding me to do it. It honestly helped all of us settle our nerves.”
Experts describe gratitude as a multi-step skill: noticing something positive, recognizing someone else helped make it happen, feeling appreciation and expressing it. Children aren’t born knowing how to do this naturally; they build the skill slowly, often by watching adults model it.
For younger kids, gratitude works best when it’s playful, simple and added into routines that already exist. “The magic secret is to keep it short, keep it playful, and make it regular by keeping it to things you already do every day,” she said. That might mean pausing at breakfast to appreciate where food came from, naming something that made them smile on the ride to school, or sharing one small thing they’re grateful for at bedtime.
Parents shouldn’t worry if kids don’t immediately grasp the idea. The seeds you’re planting through these repeated moments will grow over time.
12. What do child development experts stress about thankfulness
A.Work on many kinds of holidays.
B.Support for kids’ emotional health daily.
C.Holidays for children’s physical health.
D.Paths to mental practice.
13. What benefit do repeated gratitude moments bring children
A.Building neural pathways to focus on stress.
B.Recognizing stress easily.
C.Staying positive in different situations.
D.Noticing small good things.
14. How does gratitude work best for younger kids
A.By being long and formal.
B.By being shared mainly at bedtime.
C.By being taught in special classes.
D.By being fun, simple and regular.
15. What’s the best title for the text
A.Gratitude: Teaching Kids the Skill
B.Gratitude: Daily Practice for Kids’ Health
C.Holiday Gratitude: Why It Matters Much
D.Gratitude: A Family’s Daily Story

五、读后续写
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Not long ago, I found a wallet lying in the street. It had a little money, several small shopping lists, and different cards, including a Washington State driver’s license. I didn’t want to look through it secretly, but I couldn’t help seeing the man’s photo. He looked young, neat, and serious. I imagined this young man finding his wallet lost. The money was not much, but maybe it was all he had. I thought not returning it would be as wrong as stealing.
The address on the license was two miles away. I drove there, but the person living there didn’t know the man in the photo. I kept trying and searched his name online, finally finding his social media page. I sent him a message, saying I had his wallet and left my phone number.
The next day, I took the wallet to the preschool where I work and told my students the story. They had a warm discussion about “lost and found”. One boy said, “If you find something on the ground and no one is around, you should still try to find the owner!” But a little girl asked, “What if it’s a real diamond ” The boy replied, “Especially then — a diamond is too valuable to keep.” I held up the wallet and asked, “Is this too valuable ” The students nodded quickly. “Yes,” one boy said. “It has his picture in it. He will be very sad if he can’t get it back.”
Their simple and clear sense of right and wrong made me more determined. I told them that honesty is always the best choice and that we should always try to help those in trouble. However, as the week passed, the owner didn’t reply at all. His wallet was on my kitchen table, making me feel upset. I wondered how long I should wait before giving up.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

A Volunteer Activity
Last weekend, our class took part in a volunteer activity in the community to call on people to protect wild animals.
We handed out colorful leaflets and explained that wild animals are important parts of nature. We told residents not to hunt or buy wild creatures and to live in peace with them. Many passers-by stopped to listen and promised to act.
This activity meant a lot to me. I realized protecting wildlife is everyone’s duty. Small efforts from each person can create a better world for all living things.
五、读后续写范文
Ten days passed without a response from the owner. I felt confused and a little disappointed. I doubted if the man had ever seen my message. Some friends advised me to keep the wallet, saying the owner might not care about it anymore. But the words of my preschool students always appeared in my mind. I refused to give up and decided to wait a few more days.
Finally, my phone received a new message. It was the owner. He apologized for replying late, for he had been on a business trip far away. We made an appointment to meet at a café nearby. When he got his wallet back, he thanked me repeatedly and wanted to give me some money as a reward. I politely refused. This experience taught me honesty is priceless and we should always stick to doing the right thing no matter how long we wait.
