On December 26, 2004, it was a picture-perfect morning in Phuket, Thailand. The white sand beaches and the clear blue waters seemed calm and inviting. Peter, a guest from Bangkok, was vacationing at the Amari Hotel in Patong Beach. He spent the morning on his balcony reading a book.
He noticed the sea rising but didn’t think much of it. However, the water rose again, this time higher, and the sounds of frightened hotel workers began to fill the air. “They shouted at us to climb the hill behind the hotel. I didn’t see the wave at first but could hear it. There was this thunderous roar-like nothing I’ve ever heard before.”
Peter’s legs burned and his heart pounded with fear, but the will to survive took over everything. When he finally reached the top of the hill and looked back, what met his eyes was a devastating scene. “The wave was huge. It came over and through the hotel, and in minutes, the building was just a shell of its former self. Nearly everything was gone.”
Everyone was heartbroken. However, people helped each other and did whatever they could to get through the day. The following morning, Peter left Phuket. When he returned to Bangkok, the full weight of the disaster hit him. He finally allowed himself to cry, but he didn’t let sadness consume him. In the days following the tsunami, he volunteered to help answer calls from families searching for missing loved ones. He also organized a charity event, raising $80,000 for tsunami relief efforts.
Twenty years later, Peter returned to Phuket to attend the remembrance events. The song “What a Wonderful World” played during the event. As he spoke, Peter’s voice cracked with emotion. “That song still means so much to me. It’s a reminder that, even after something so terrible, there is still so much good in the world.”
24. Why did the hotel workers call out to Peter and other guests
A.To remind them to stay calm.
B.To invite them to go climbing.
C.To warn them of the unexpected disaster.
D.To encourage them to brave the cold sea.
25. What can be inferred about the hotel after the wave hit it
A.It was covered with sand but still recognizable.
B.It remained structurally complete but functionless.
C.It was temporarily closed and would be rebuilt soon.
D.It suffered serious damage and lost most of its structure.
26. How did Peter respond to the disaster after returning to Bangkok
A.He couldn’t get over his sorrow.
B.He went back to his volunteer job.
C.He wrote articles about his experience.
D.He focused his energy on helping others.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text
A.A Story of Survival
B.Rising from the Waves
C.The Hill Behind the Hotel
D.Remembering the Tsunami

Over the past few months, the Internet has seen Ariana Grande-Butera and Cynthia Erivo laugh together, cry together and sing together. Their chemistry, among other factors, is what has made “Wicked” a box office hit.
“Wicked” is divided into two parts, with the second movie, “Wicked: For Good,” released (上映) in November 2025. The film has been long-awaited by fans of the stage musical, which first appeared on Broadway in 2003. And, as someone who saw the show for the first time in 2019, and saw the show again in San Francisco in 2024, I think I’m more than capable of reviewing the movie.
Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) and Ariana Grande (Glinda) give a very strong performance in the Ozdust Ballroom dance scene. Following the realization that she has been tricked by Glinda, Elphaba steps into the center of the dance floor and begins dancing on her own. Erivo’s tears are natural and unplanned in this scene. And, Grande’s wiping of Erivo’s tears is also unplanned. Chemistry like this cannot be practiced, and performances such as these require a level of personal openness that can build a deep friendship.
The director Jon M. Chu and the rest of the team put hard work into making the movie. The $150 million budget can be seen in its impressive set designs which hit the viewer as soon as the movie begins. The Emerald City is not the only thing that shines off the screen, as the rolling fields of Munchkinland show off nine million tulips (郁金香) that were planted specifically for the filming of the movie. Planting nine million tulips is an amazing thing in any situation.
Movies have more time to tell a story. Yet, the movie cut some scenes that most build Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship. To viewers unfamiliar with the Broadway source material, this could lead to the movie feeling a bit disconnected.
But I truly believe the “Wicked” movie will be remembered by fans of the stage production and movie-goers for years to come.
28. What can be learnt about “Wicked: For Good”
A.It first appeared on Broadway.
B.It is adapted from a musical.
C.It is based on a real-life story.
D.It will be followed by two remakes.
29. How does the author look at the ballroom dance scene
A.It is a result of long hard work.
B.It calls for much acting experience.
C.It adds an artistic touch to the movie.
D.It shows the actresses’ close connection.
30. What does the author want to show by mentioning the tulips
A.The film’s relatively high costs.
B.The film’s environmental impact.
C.The production team’s great effort.
D.The director’s filming approaches.
31. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 5 refer to
A.Cutting the scenes.
B.Telling the stories.
C.Limiting the time.
D.Changing the stage.

AI social chatbots can help reduce loneliness, especially for people who would otherwise have little opportunity for social support. However, new research suggests that developing too much emotional dependence on AI social chatbots could have a dark side.
The new study of 496 AI social chatbot users found that higher satisfaction and emotional interaction between users and their chatbot were linked to worse real-life interpersonal communication. Many users turned to AI social chatbots not only for entertainment and social interaction but also to meet their emotional needs. Interacting with AI social chatbots regularly had the most impact on user emotions, with less impact on their thinking and behavior.
Users of AI chatbots, even social ones, are not expected to understand how AI feels, and the relationship is often centered around the needs of the human user. Researchers found that AI social chatbot users primarily focused on satisfying their emotional needs, rather than emotional engagement. This design is encouraged by AI social chatbots, which are built to promote connection by addressing the emotional needs of the user.
In reality, users are aware that AI lacks feelings. This absence of two-way emotional interaction is significant, as it does not truly mirror real-life human interactions, which require emotional give-and-take. Emotional dependence on AI could harm users’ relationships and interactions with humans, as users may not develop the ability to address the complex feelings of the other.
In addition, the convenience of engaging with AI, which does not have its own time limits or emotional needs, could mean that users are likely to choose time with AI over putting in the effort to schedule and manage more complex human relationships. If users are getting their emotional needs partially or fully met through AI social chatbots, this may diminish the drive to reach out to interact with other humans.
While the best amount of time with AI social chatbots is still unknown, it is important for people to balance their time with AI and with real-life human interactions.
32. What problem did the new study find in AI social chatbots
A.They had no real effect on people’s emotions.
B.They might worsen users’ social skills in real life.
C.They made people increasingly dependent on them.
D.They could not quickly satisfy people’s social needs.
33. Which of the following would lead to the problem according to the study
A.One-sided human-AI relationships.
B.Short-lived human-AI relationships.
C.Long time spent with AI social chatbots.
D.The lack of feelings in AI social chatbots.
34. What does the underlined word “diminish” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A.Allow.
B.Cause.
C.Control.
D.Reduce.
35. Which statement will the author probably agree with
A.Every bean has its black.
B.Too much is as bad as too little.
C.Make the most of what you have.
D.All things in their being are good for something.

How to Avoid Weight Gain over the Holidays
Holidays can be stressful and challenging when you’re trying to maintain a healthy weight. Many people assume that seasonal weight gain is unavoidable, but this is not the case. ____36____ Here are practical tips that will help you navigate holiday parties and stay on track with your healthy goals while enjoying holiday fun.
First, never arrive at a holiday party with an empty stomach. Skipping meals to “reserve calories” is a misleading strategy — it often leads to overconsumption of unhealthy, high-calorie snacks at the event. ____37____ Eating three balanced, nutritious meals before the party will keep you feeling full and satisfied, so you won’t be tempted to binge on cookies or chips.
When filling your plate at the party, pay close attention to food proportions. Your plate should be mostly filled with healthy foods. ____38____ Consuming these healthy foods first will reduce your desire for junk food later.
____39____ You don’t have to cut out desserts entirely; simply choose lighter alternatives such as angel food cake and sip water between bites to feel full more quickly. A small slice of cake or a tiny taste of a cookie is enough to satisfy your sweet cravings without adding too many calories.
Don’t overlook liquid calories, which accumulate rapidly. Alcohol, eggnog and sweetened hot chocolate are all high in calories. ____40____ Besides, choose low-calorie drinks like coffee, tea or sparkling water instead of sugary or creamy beverages (饮料) whenever possible.
Finally, prioritize social interaction over food and drinks. Holiday parties are meant for connecting with friends and family. Joining a game or keeping a conversation going will distract you from overindulging in food and drinks.
A.Be cautious and make wise choices at the holiday dessert table.
B.Cutting back on sugary drinks is an effective way to reduce liquid calories.
C.Instead, stick to your regular healthy eating routine before attending the party.
D.Try to eat desserts immediately upon arrival so you won’t constantly think about them.
E.Fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables, a quarter with carbs and the rest with protein.
F.Limit alcohol intake to 1-2 servings and choose lighter options such as wine or light beer.
G.With a little self-control and wise decisions, you can enjoy the season without gaining extra pounds.

Peter drew back the bowstring (弓弦), his eyes focused on the little red target. He decided to prove himself. He couldn’t afford to let anything stand in his way. He was going to win and he was sure of it.
Peter was born cross-eyed (斗鸡眼). His parents had been informed by the doctor that it was a rare condition, influencing only about one in a hundred newborns. Despite their best efforts to ensure he never felt different, there were moments when he couldn’t get over that feeling.
One day, while grocery shopping with his mother, Peter was sized up by two women. One of them said, “Oh my! What happened to him Glasses at such a young age, poor kid!” The other shook her head, leaving Peter’s mother with no choice but to lead him away from their comments.
Peter discovered his condition on his first day of school when he was eight. While Peter was eating his sandwich quietly during the lunch break, a boy came up to him and asked, “What’s wrong with your eyes ” Peter stopped eating. How could he explain when he didn’t fully understand himself His parents had never told him about his condition, saying that his eyes were perfect. Yet, if they were good, why did others find them strange
Now Peter was in high school and an archery competition was coming up. He loved the sport and wanted to prove himself to those who doubted his future. Every afternoon after school, he would go to the archery range, practicing drawing the bow and aiming. He adjusted his posture repeatedly, learned to focus his unique vision to his advantage, and gradually mastered the skill. Peter signed up, believing that his cross-eyed condition would not stop him from achieving greatness — and his hard training had already given him the strength to compete.
The day of the competition petitors showcased their archery skills, and then it was Peter’s turn to take his first shot. He raised his bow, drew back the arrow (箭), and released it. The arrow moved through the air and reached the target dead center.

Speak Up, Everybody!
Nowadays, few students are willing to speak up in class, making our classes quiet and lifeless. Many of us lower our heads to avoid teachers’ eye contact, afraid of making mistakes or being laughed at. As a result, we lose chances to exchange ideas and improve ourselves.
I’m writing to call on all classmates to be active in class. Don’t fear mistakes, for they are chances to learn. Raise your hands bravely to share your thoughts. Only if we take part in discussions can we gain more knowledge and make our classes lively.

The audience was surprised. Whispers spread quickly across the stadium as people stared at Peter. Some competitors looked amazed, while others stared in disbelief. No one expected a boy with cross eyes to hit the bullseye on his first try. A few audience members even clapped softly, shocked by his perfect shot. Peter stood still, holding his bow tightly, his heart beating wildly. He could feel all eyes fixed on him, full of curiosity rather than mockery this time.
At this moment, Mom’s encouraging words appeared in his mind. She once told him his eyes were special gifts instead of flaws. Inspired, Peter took a deep breath and prepared for his next shot. He ignored all whispers, focused fully on the target and drew his bow again. Round after round, he kept hitting high scores. When the competition ended, Peter won first prize. Holding the medal, he realized one’s shortcomings would never stop those who stick to their dreams.
