Food festivals are very common in the UK. They happen everywhere and all year round. No matter what food you like, you can find a festival for it — even if your taste is very specific.
Meatopia
This three-day, London-based festival takes place at the end of August and is a meat lover’s paradise. In addition to a range of high-quality meat products, from juicy burgers to tender steaks, all locally sourced and expertly prepared, attendees can listen to live music, watch meat-cutting shows, and attend informal meat-based workshops.
The National Honey Show
If you have a sweet tooth, then the National Honey Show is the place for you to be. It started in 1921 and is the largest event of its kind. This three-day event attracts many local participants who show their sweet golden honey, some of which is sold globally.
The Orange Sauce Festival
Have you heard about a festival that is devoted only to orange sauce Held in Cumbria, this sweet, fragrant festival has been running for 3 years. What attracts people most is a competition to find the best homemade orange sauce. There are thousands of participants from over 30 different countries across the globe, bringing their local snacks to share here.
The Ginger and Spice Festival
If you’d prefer something spicier, then you could attend The Ginger and Spice Festival held in Market Drayton. Hanson, a 68-year-old teacher, discovered a group of seahorses off Long Beach by chance and built a secret world for them.
The story of this seahorse world dates back to a day years ago, when Hanson watched in horror as more than 100 high school students were playing in the waters, right where seahorses usually lived. “I thought, I had to do something,” he says.
To protect them, he decided to build a safe home. Using leaves and tree branches, he created a world at the bottom of the sea — his very own seahorse city in a deeper, safer place. Thankfully, the seahorses soon moved in.
Although not a scientist, Hanson visits his “kids” every five days, often making the two-hour trip in the middle of the night. He keeps detailed notes on each dive. He knows each seahorse by name and personality. “Getting to know these strange animals has greatly affected my life,” he says. “It has made me a better human being.”
Later, Hanson was joined by Amy, a diving coach and former soldier who felt better through diving. Now they protect the seahorses together. “We call them our kids because we love them so much,” Amy says.
They keep the place secret to avoid attracting visitors that could damage the seahorses’ home. But if Hanson guides you down, you might see an orange, quiet creature with a thin mouth, totally still in the dark water. To see a seahorse in the wild is to feel special and amazed, as if you’ve just seen a unicorn (独角兽) under the sea.
4. What made Hanson take action to protect the seahorses
A.A personal desire to build an underwater city.
B.Observing students playing in the seahorses’ habitat.
C.A scientific report on falling seahorse populations.
D.The discovery of pollution in the waters off Long Beach.
5. Which of the following is NOT a method Hanson uses to care for the seahorses
A.Maintaining detailed written records of his dives.
B.Making a special effort to visit them regularly.
C.Creating an artificial habitat using natural materials.
D.Personally guiding tourists to the site for educational purposes.
6. Why did Amy start diving according to the passage
A.To protect sea animals.
B.To feel better in her life.
C.To work as a diving coach.
D.To join Hanson’s project.
7. Which words can best describe Hanson

B.Strict and serious.

D.Humorous and patient.

When my husband Paul persuaded me to adopt a dog, I was full of doubts. At 65, I thought we should be planning trips, not picking up dog hair. I agreed only for Paul’s sake.
Casey burst into our lives like a storm. Morning walks became a daily struggle — his powerful nose pulled me toward every piece of forgotten pizza or chicken nugget on the ground, and squirrels sent him out of control. I often heard the mocking question, “Who’s walking who ”
Hope arrived with Laurie, a young dog trainer. She explained that Casey was a hound (猎犬) — born to hunt. She taught us to use a firm, confident voice to break his focus. I practised shouting “Casey!” with authority, something that had always been hard for me. When he listened, he got a treat. It was a new language we were learning together.
Slowly, the chaos(混乱) began to abate. We started walking as a team, not enemies. The constant pulling turned into a gentle rhythm. My frustration (挫败) softened into understanding, and then into love.
The greatest gift, however, was peace. One sleepless night, I found Casey asleep on the couch. I lay my head on his warm chest and felt my worries melt away with his steady breath. This unexpected companion, once a source of anxiety, had quietly taught me how to find rest. He was no longer just Paul’s dog; he had become the heart of our home.
8. How did the author feel about walking the dog at first
A.Scared.
B.Doubtful.
C.Indifferent.
D.Upset.
9. Why did Casey behave badly during walks at the beginning
A.He couldn’t control his nature to explore.
B.He wasn’t familiar with the routes.
C.He couldn’t concentrate without a trainer.
D.He wanted to get away from the author.
10. What does the underlined word “abate” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Increase.
B.Unfold.
C.Decrease.
D.Develop.
11. What is the best title for the text
A.An Unexpected Gift from a Hound
B.Learning to Love My Husband’s Dog
C.From Chaos to Peace: My Dog Companion
D.Finding Rest with Casey, the Family Pet

Losing weight through short-term strict diets is a common idea, but research shows it rarely leads to long-term success. Only about 20% of people who lose weight this way manage to keep from gaining it back.
Why do diets often fail One reason is that they typically ban enjoyable foods like chocolate, which activate the brain’s reward center. Removing them reduces pleasure and can bring on strong desires to eat even when we’re not hungry. Our body’s natural systems also work against strict dieting. When we eat too little, our bodies respond by increasing hunger, reducing fullness, and burning fewer calories. The brain receives stronger hunger signals, often leading to overeating.
Research indicates people tend to regain 50-70% of lost weight. Additionally, rapid weight loss reduces muscle mass. Since muscle burns calories even at rest, losing it slows metabolism (新陈代谢), making weight regain more likely.
So what works better Experts recommend focusing on adding healthy foods rather than simply cutting things out. Protein (蛋白质) promotes fullness while carbohydrates (碳水化合物) help maintain satisfaction. Setting realistic goals, creating practical plans, and partnering with others can also help. A slower, balanced approach better protects muscle and supports lasting results.
12. What does the research show about short-term strict diets
A.They help people lose weight forever.
B.They rarely lead to long-term success.
C.They are the best way to keep healthy.
D.They work better than any other method.
13. What can be inferred about muscle loss from Paragraph 3
A.It makes people feel less hungry.
B.It may result in gaining weight again.
C.It is an important goal of strict diets.
D.It increases the speed of metabolism.
14. What do the experts suggest people do for long-term weight loss
A.Ignore hunger and eat very little.
B.Follow strict short-term diet rules.
C.Avoid enjoyable foods completely.
D.Take in protein and set suitable goals.
15. What is the main purpose in writing the text
A.To compare different diet plans.
B.To advertise a new weight loss program.
C.To explain why strict diets are ineffective.
D.To encourage people to avoid carbohydrates.

四、书信写作范文
Dear Anxious Friend,
Thank you for sharing your feelings with me. I totally understand your stress, and many students face the same trouble before big exams, so don’t be too hard on yourself.
Here are my suggestions. First, take short breaks every hour to clear your mind, which helps you stay focused in class. Second, avoid staying up late to review; enough sleep can calm your nerves and improve memory. Besides, you can walk outside for a while to release anxiety.
I believe proper rest and reasonable revision will bring you good results. Wish you all the best.
Best regards,
David
