I have always been indecisive and scared of wasting money. When it came to travel, this meant I was eager for someone to tell me where to go, what to see and what to eat. Before any holiday or day out, I’d already explored the area on Google Earth, watched videos on social media, and read online reviews. I knew exactly where I was going before I’d even left my house.
Then it struck me that, in trying to plan the perfect day, I had forgotten what makes these experiences joyful: spontaneity (随性). Even on holiday, every day was planned in great detail — and it was ruining the fun of travelling. Without realising, I’d turned travelling into work.
So, a year ago, I made a change. I banned myself from reading reviews and excessive planning for a trip to Barcelona. Instead, I chose an area I wanted to explore. Once I was there, that was it. I couldn’t rely on my phone, which meant no Google Maps, no Tripadvisor, and no TikTok.
It wasn’t easy at first. I felt a bit lost without my phone while wandering through unknown neighbourhoods. But that’s exactly why it’s so fun. Going in unprepared opens you up to surprises. Without being glued to directions, I noticed more of my surroundings. I wandered into museums I’d never heard of and explored interesting side streets.
Now, it’s the only way I’ll travel. Sometimes, I’ll find myself down a dead end, and sometimes the place I choose isn’t great. But for every miss, there are many more hits. The places I returned to were ones I’d found on my own.
Travelling without planning has made me more comfortable with making decisions. Trying to have the perfect holiday is no longer the point; it’s about living in the present and making good memories.
24. What did the author do before traveling

C.He wanted to spend less money on travel.
D.He realized planning reduced the fun of travel.
26. What kind of person is the author now
A.Shy and dependent.
B.Strict and organized.
C.Adventurous and open-minded.
D.Careless and irresponsible.
27. What is the best title for the text
A.The Importance of Travel Planning
B.An Unforgettable Trip to Barcelona
C.How to Avoid Phone Use While Travelling
D.From Overplanning to Enjoying Travelling

Cities are often hotter than surrounding areas, a phenomenon known as the heat island effect. Recently, scientists have discovered a similar phenomenon related to rainfall which is called the “urban (城市) rainfall effect”. It means that cities tend to receive more rain than nearby rural (农村) areas. “This is everywhere,” said Dev Niyogi, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin. This difference in rainfall has also grown over the last twenty years as the climate continues to warm.
This effect influences all cities, especially dense and rapidly growing ones, many of which already struggle with flooding. Cities can attract rain for several reasons. First, large buildings slow down incoming storms, allowing them to release rain. In addition, the heat from buildings and roads creates warm, moist air that rises, cools, and then falls as rain. “All these factors may contribute to the urban rainfall anomaly (异常现象),” said Xinxin Sui, a graduate student involved in the research. In the United States, cities such as Houston, Miami, and New Orleans are among the most affected and have experienced severe flooding in the past.
For their study, the scientists used satellite data to examine rainfall in over 1,000 cities from 2001 to 2020. They found that nearly two-thirds of these cities receive more rain than nearby rural areas. This effect has almost doubled in the past two decades, partly due to urban expansion and rising temperatures. Warmer air can hold more moisture, making rainfall heavier. The researchers also found that the bigger a city’s population is, the larger the gap in rainfall amounts between urban and rural areas.
Niyogi suggests that city planners should take these findings seriously and prepare for the increased rainfall to prevent flooding. At the same time, cities have an opportunity to better manage water resources by redirecting extra rainwater underground to refill groundwater supplies for future use. “We should think more about how we want to manage our water resources,” he said, as “there is an opportunity here.”
28. What do we know about the urban rainfall effect
A.It only happens in a few large cities.
B.It has remained unchanged in recent years.
C.It means cities receive more rain than nearby areas.
D.It causes cities to become cooler than nearby areas.
29. Why did the author mention Houston, Miami, and New Orleans in paragraph 2
A.To compare their rainfall with other cities.
B.To explain how these cities prevent flooding.
C.To show that these cities are the largest in the US.
D.To give examples of cities influenced by increased rainfall.
30. What is the main idea of paragraph 3
A.The causes of temperature rise in cities.
B.The research findings on urban rainfall.
C.The differences between small and large cities.
D.The ways the scientists collected research data.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.City planners are ignoring the problem of flooding.
B.Increasing rainfall can be turned into something useful.
C.Groundwater supplies are already enough in most cities.
D.Cities will no longer face groundwater shortages in the future.

In 1964, the killing of Kitty Genovese in New York shocked the world — not only for its violence, but for the lack of action of those who saw or heard it. Reports said dozens of neighbours failed to intervene or even call the police. Though later investigations revealed the original story had been overstated (夸大), the image of the silent crowd remained.
Psychologists John Darley and Bibb Latané seized on the event and began a series of experiments. They discovered a troubling pattern: the more witnesses present, the less likely any individual was to help. Responsibility, it seemed, was a weak thing, quick to disappear in the crowd.
Their findings showed the steps between seeing and acting. First comes noticing. Then comes understanding — is this truly an emergency Then the question of responsibility — is it mine At each stage, hesitation grows when others are present.
In one study, participants sat in a room filling out a form as smoke began to spread in the building. When alone, they acted almost immediately. In groups, many ignored the smoke altogether, looking at one another’s calm faces and regarding others’ inaction as a sign of safety.
Later research complicated the picture. In real-world emergencies recorded in video, bystanders often did intervene, and larger crowds sometimes meant that someone stepped forward. Context matters: people are quicker to help in dangerous or clear situations, or when directly ordered, such as: “You, call the police.” And close groups prove more willing than strangers gathered by chance.
The lesson is uncomfortably simple: observation alone is not enough. To notice without acting can be fear disguised as politeness, or weakness hidden behind calm. Sometimes the most human act is to break the spell of the crowd, to turn seeing into clear responsibility — and to step forward when everyone else stands still.
32. What does the underlined word “intervene” mean in paragraph 1
A.offer help.
B.watch closely.
C.stay nearby.
D.keep calm.
33. According to paragraph 3, how does the presence of others affect people’s actions
A.It makes people act more quickly.
B.It increases hesitation and reduces action.
C.It encourages people to take responsibility.
D.It helps people better understand emergencies.
34. Which of the following people is most likely to step forward to help
A.A person in a large crowd of strangers.
B.A person who is directly told to call the police.
C.A person in a group where everyone looks calm.
D.A person who is unsure whether it is an emergency.
35. What message does the author want to convey
A.Staying calm in all situations.
B.Waiting for others to offer help.
C.Taking responsibility and acting when necessary.
D.Avoiding dangerous situations whenever possible.
