The Taklimakan Desert(塔克拉玛干沙漠), known as the “Sea of Death”, is the biggest desert in China and the second-largest moving desert in the world. It covers about 337,600 square kilometers and now has a 3,046-kilometer-long green belt around it. This green belt, the longest in the world, was completed by planting desert poplars(胡杨)and red willows in Yutian County(县).
The project faced many problems. As we all know, the desert covers about 76% of Xinjiang’s desert area, and its sand dunes(沙丘)are very tall; some are even as high as about 300 meters. So more time, money and effort are required. The dry climate added more challenges because there is so little water that plants are hard to grow. The sandstorms often happen too. The Taklimakan Desert is one of the most active areas for sandstorms in China, creating more difficulties.
Finishing this green belt is a big success. Experts say it is an amazing achievement in human history. The green belt protects areas with water and plants from sandstorms, improves the local environment, and supports farming.
A local farmer said he was happy about the project and hoped it would help his family in the future. In the coming years, Xinjiang will continue working to make the green belt become larger to fight desertification and restore(修复)about 2.34 million hectares(公顷)of sandy lands by 2030. On November 28th, a great project was successfully completed in the Taklimakan Desert(塔克拉玛干沙漠). It is an amazing event in China’s history of desert control.
The desert is in Xinjiang. Known as the “Sea of Death”, it is the second-largest moving desert around the world. However, near this desert, people are working hard to stop it from getting bigger. They are building a green wall called “locking the edge”(锁边). This 3046-kilometer-long wall shows China’s great experience in
environmental protection.
The project was filled with difficulties. Workers had to plant trees and grass in the sand in order to stop the sand from moving around. What’s more, they had to fight against strong winds and poor soil(土壤). They never thought about giving up and succeeded in planting billions of plants along the desert edges.
Thanks to their hard work, the environment is much better now. The project brings many benefits. First, fewer sandstorms mean cleaner air. And animals like wild camels now have more food to eat and more places to live in. Also, it offers new jobs to local people. This green wall is not just stopping the desert from growing, but also giving hope and a greener future to the whole area.

Have you ever heard of Saihanba, a very big forest that lies in Chengde, Hebei In Mongolian(蒙古语), its name means “beautiful highlands”. Just as the name means, across the area were endless forests, grasslands and clear lakes.

From then on, they asked the workers to keep working until they turned Saihanba into a new national forest. Although they met lots of difficulties planting trees, they solved them and the land has changed a lot since then. Today, Saihanba is famous as the “Emerald(绿宝石)of North China”.
