A toy named the “Crying Horse” has become a big hit across China. People found it strangely beautiful and the toy was seen as the first cultural “dark horse” of the New Year.
In January 2026, a person in Hangzhou bought a toy horse online and received one with a small mistake. Its mouth was made upside down, making it look like crying. Unlike traditional toys, which always wear happy smiles, this horse was clearly different. The person shared it online. Surprisingly, this mistake did not influence the toy’s success. Instead, it became the toy’s special magic. It created a new “sad-cute” style that felt more real and touching compared to the usual perfect toys.
Wang Bin, a professor of social media communication at Renmin University of China, shares his opinion on this cultural event. Many people, especially young adults feel tired and face many challenges about the future. They find peace in the toy’s gentle expression. The toy horse cuts down their worries. It is not just another toy on the shelf. It feels like a quiet understanding friend.
Facing the big hit, the factories in Yiwu took action at once. They caught the moment at high speed, offering more products nearly overnight. The factories are very busy because orders from many parts of the world are pouring in much faster than the workers can process them.
With the Year of the Horse coming, even a toy horse with a crying face can draw worldwide attention. Turning a surprise into a chance, this spirit is all about adaptability (适应能力), creativity and humor.

People use computers to do lots of things. But all would not go well without a small mouse.
The world’s first computer mouse appeared in 1964. The mouse was mainly made up of a wooden “house”, a circuit (电路) board and two metal wheels. Because the long “tail” at the back made it look more like a mouse, the name “mouse” became well-known soon.
Later, Bill English, an American computer engineer, improved the mouse. He changed the wheels into a rolling (滚转的) ball at the bottom of the mouse. The “Ball Mouse” was easier to use, and this had a strong connection with its success. It had its problems, though. For example, the ball became dirty easily from rolling around the desktop. The dirt had to be cleaned out often to keep the ball running well.
The disadvantages led to a new version (版本) being created around 1980. It was then that the optical (光学的) mouse was invented. However, the mouse wasn’t widely used because it was too expensive.
The computer mouse has been improved many times. But with the rise of touch screens, will the computer abandon its best friend—the mouse Some experts believe people will no longer use the computer mouse in the future. Moreover, computers that can read our brains and facial expressions are being created. But some people think the mouse will still be used even with the progress of new technology. What’s your opinion on it

A saying is popular on Chinese social media:“If you have no talent, then repeat until you do.” It tells us that success usually comes from persistence(坚持不懈) and repetition, not natural talent that some people are born with. Many successful people shared their own stories of learning an instrument, mastering a language or improving in sports simply by practising the same thing over and over again. This is called the philosophy(哲学) of repetition, which means that focus and persistence are the keys to being excellent at what we do.
Repetition really works in our daily lives. It makes our memory stronger, helps our muscles work better together and improves our skills day by day. A pianist who plays the same music hundreds of times can play it easily and beautifully in the end. Each repetition makes the action smoother and our understanding of the skill deeper.
This idea is similar to Canadian writer Malcolm Gladwell’s “10,000-hour rule”, which says practising a skill carefully for about 10,000 hours can make you an expert in that field. But repetition alone is not enough to achieve success. Experts say true practice must be careful and focused——paying full attention, taking it seriously and receiving useful advice. Blind practice will make bad habits hard to break, and endless repetition without passion will make you feel bored quickly.
Also, repetition can’t take the place of talent, interest or genes(基因). Some people learn new things faster because of their natural gifts. But we still need the philosophy of repetition: improvement always needs enough effort and patience. With careful thought, useful feedback, clear purposes and true love for it, our common daily effort can lead to amazing success in the end.
( ) 31. Which of the following brings success according to the text
A. Talent and effort. B. Love and practice.
C. Persistence and repetition. D. Interest and patience.
( ) 32. What can repetition help us do in our daily lives
①Break bad habits easily. ②Make our memory stronger.
③Help our muscles work better together. ④Improve our skills.
A. ①③④ B. ②③④ C. ①②④ D. ①②③
( ) 33. How does the writer start Paragraph 3
A. By giving an example. B. By showing a fact.
C. By leading into a rule. D. By telling a story.
( ) 34. What does the underlined word “feedback” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Advice. B. Practice. C. Energy. D. Progress.
( ) 35. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. The Secret of the 10,000-hour Rule B. The Power of Repetition
C. The Way to Be an Expert D. The Importance of Action

Rebecca Young, now age 13, designed a solar-powered blanket (太阳能毯) and won first prize among 70,000 students in the UK Primary Engineer competition.
Where did you get the idea
When I would go outside in the winter months, I always saw homeless people with very little to stay warm. It always made me so sad. I wanted to come up with something that could help them.
How does your invention work
My solar-powered blanket takes sunlight during the day and stores it into a battery (电池) . At night, the blanket uses the energy it saved. It turns off when it gets warm enough so it won’t get too hot.
How did you bring your idea to life
I did research on other sleeping bags and backpacks and then created a drawing for the competition. After I won, the engineers actually built a real model of my idea. It uses copper wires (铜线) to make the blankets warm, and solar panels (太阳能板) to collect energy from the sun. I made something that might one day help a person on the street. That thought is amazing to me.
Why do you love science
Science is great because it makes us curious and teaches us how to ask, try, and fix things. I want kids to know: if they can dream it, they can make it real. Nothing is impossible!
