Marie Curie was a great scientist, born in Poland in 1867. She is famous for her research on radioactivity (放射性), a word she invented.
As a young woman, she could not go to university in Poland because she was a woman. So, she moved to Paris, France, to study. There, she met Pierre Curie, another scientist, and they got married. They became a great science team.
Together, they studied a mineral (矿物质) called pitchblende (沥青铀矿). In 1898, after very hard work in a simple laboratory, they discovered two new radioactive elements (放射性元素): polonium (钋) and radium (镭). For this important discovery, they won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903, together with another scientist. Sadly, Pierre died in an accident in 1906. Marie was very sad but continued her work bravely. She became the first woman professor at the University of Paris. In 1911, she won a second Nobel Prize, this time in Chemistry, for finding pure radium. She is still the only person to have won Nobel Prizes in two different sciences.
During World War I, she helped save many lives by creating mobile X-ray machines for hospitals.
However, her long exposure (暴露) to radioactive materials made her very sick. She died in 1934 from a disease caused by radiation.

Yang Chen-Ning is one of the greatest physicists in the world. He was born in 1922 and passed away in Beijing on October 18, 2025 at the age of 103.
Yang had a strong love for science. As a young man, he studied hard and later went to the US for further education.
In 1957, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics with his partner Li Zhengdao. This made him very famous around the world.
Besides his success in science, Yang never forgot his homeland. In 1971, he became the first top scientist to visit China after 1949. He helped build links between Chinese and American scientists. He also raised money to support Chinese students to study abroad.
In 1999, Yang started working as a professor at Tsinghua University. He spent much time on teaching and research. He worked hard to set up and develop the Institute for Advanced Study. This had a big influence on China’s higher education and the cultivation of scientific talents (科技人才培养).
He once said, “Chinese culture is always in my heart.” He not only made great contributions to physics but also influenced many young scientists in China. In 2022, he got the “Touching China 2021” Award.
Yang’s life was not only a great legend (传奇) in the world of science, but also a bridge connecting East and West. His 100-year journey became an unforgettable part in the history of human knowledge.
