It was a dream come true to study at one of the oldest and best universities in the world. I enjoyed living and studying in Oxford which is a little old town with rich history and beautiful buildings. The studying pace was very fast and demanding. However, there was still enough room to have fun with friends from my cohort. I really enjoyed the social life and being surrounded by like-minded people from all around the world.
I was surprised by how diverse the student body was when I arrived in Oxford. It is a melting pot of extremely smart and talented people from different cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Another shock I experienced was the obvious divide between students and locals. Oxford is after all not just a university but also a town inhabited by locals. Although we all share the same space, there is almost no interaction between the students and the locals.
During my studies, I could not work because there simply wasn’t enough time to balance a demanding academic program and a job. Luckily I was on a scholarship that covered all of my costs so I didn’t have to worry about it. At the end of my master’s program, I interned at the Open Society Foundations.
I come from a low-income family in Croatia, and as a young person, I never thought I would be able to visit places like the UK, let alone study at a world-famous and expensive university like Oxford. Later I realized that there are actually many scholarships and programs that help students like me gain access to higher education. I would recommend young students from disadvantaged backgrounds to think big and not give up on their dreams. The doors will open for those who are determined and positive.

Many educators have been teaching themselves how to use AI. For Jerome Ong, a 5th grade teacher in Ridgewood, New Jersey, AI has changed the way he approaches teaching. He now uses AI tools every week in his classroom. “You have to find what works for your students,” he said. Ong not only teaches his students what AI is, but also where it falls short. “If you keep at it and say, ‘No, you’re wrong, you’re wrong,’ eventually AI will say, ‘I’m sorry, I was wrong.’ Doing that with your class can show you that AI isn’t really as smart as you think it is,” Ong said.
This summer, Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic announced a first-of-its-kind plan to train hundreds of thousands of members of the American Federation of Teachers. “I think if we’re going to make AI work for students and kids, we need to listen to teachers,” said Microsoft president Brad Smith. The $23 million investment will go toward virtual and in-person training in New York City.
“The direct connection between a teacher and their kids can never be replaced by new technologies, but if we learn how to use them, set practical guidelines and put teachers in the driver’s seat, teaching and learning can be better,” said AFT President Randi Weingarten.
However, critics cite cheating concerns and Microsoft’s own research, which showed a self-reported reduction in critical thinking skills when AI was not used responsibly. AFT member Lois Weiner thinks teachers would be better served by more support within schools than by a partnership with Silicon Valley. “There is so much boredom in the job, but the answer to that is to improve teachers’ working conditions,” said Weiner, adding that AI does not achieve better work conditions for teachers.
Smith argued education should be left to teachers: “Those of us in the tech field need to provide the tools and help school boards, districts, and teachers so they decide how to put those tools into practice.”
8. What do the underlined words “falls short” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Is wrong.
B.Has limitations.
C.Is not enough.
D.Fails to work.
9. What is the main idea of paragraph 2
A.Teachers are urged to listen to students.
B.Microsoft will invest $23 million in NYC.
C.Tech companies plan to train teachers.
D.Three firms aim to promote AI in schools.
10. What can be inferred from Lois Weiner’s comments
A.AI can help reduce teachers’ boredom.
B.Partnership with tech firms benefits teachers.
C.Teachers are smarter than AI.
D.Teachers need more support within schools.
11. What is Brad Smith’s attitude towards AI in education
A.Supportive.
B.Critical.
C.Doubtful.
D.Neutral.

As a writing teacher, I am used to reading and responding to difficult texts. In fact, I like dealing with texts that have interesting ideas, because I understand their value. I have learned through my years of education that what eventually appeals to me is not just grammatically-perfect, smooth writing, but writing that forces me to think beyond the page. It is writing where the writer has challenged himself or herself and then offered that challenge to the reader.
You will often come across critical thinking and analysis as requirements for tasks in writing and upper-level courses across different subjects. Instructors have different explanations of what they actually require from you, but, in general, they expect you to respond thoughtfully to the texts you read. The first thing you should remember is not to be afraid of critical thinking. It does not mean that you have to criticize the text, oppose its basic idea, or attack the writer simply because you feel you have to. Criticism is the process of responding to and judging ideas, arguments, and style so that readers understand how and why you value them.
Critical thinking is also a process that is key to all subjects. While in this passage I refer mainly to critical thinking in writing, the general principles behind critical thinking are very similar in other fields. In history, for instance, it could mean examining and analyzing primary sources to understand the background in which they were written. In the hard sciences, it usually involves making judgments and decisions rationally, and solving problems.
While critical thinking may be subject-specific, most of its general principles such as thinking rationally, making independent judgments, and having a healthy doubt about what is being read, are common to all subjects. No matter the area of study, using critical thinking skills leads to clear, flexible thinking and a better understanding of the subject at hand.
12. Why does the author prefer certain texts
A.They are error-free in grammar.
B.They present exciting viewpoints.
C.They make readers reflective.
D.They read smoothly and easily.
13. What is critical thinking according to the author
A.Challenging the author’s viewpoint.
B.Considering and assessing thoughts.
C.Rejecting the text’s main argument.
D.Finding fault with the writing.
14. How does the author explain that critical thinking matters across all subjects
A.By referring to different areas of study.
B.By describing what it means in history.
C.By explaining its role in science.
D.By drawing comparisons between fields.
15. What might be discussed in the follow-up text
A.Types of critical thinking.
B.Uses of deep thinking.
C.Benefits of critical thinking.
D.Methods of thinking critically.

September arrived with cool air and new starts. As a freshman at Westwood High, I felt lost until I met Mia. We became friends right away — sharing lunch tables, laughing through boring classes, and walking home together every day. “You’re like the sister I never had,” Mia said one afternoon, smiling as we sat under our favorite big tree. I nodded, feeling happy. For a month, we told each other everything—dreams, worries. Life felt perfect.
Problems came when my diary disappeared. I’d left it on my desk during gym class, and when I came back, it was gone. I was worried — my deepest secrets were inside. Later, I saw Mia talking quietly with Sarah, the girl who always gave me mean looks. Mia looked at me, then quickly looked away. “Did you see my diary ” I asked, my voice shaking. Mia’s eyes got big. “No, I … I haven’t seen it.” But her hands shook as she spoke. I felt a bad feeling in my stomach. Sarah smiled in a mean way, and I knew — Mia had taken it.
I stayed away from Mia completely. At lunch, I sat alone, staring at my sandwich. When she tried to talk to me, I turned my back. “What’s wrong ” she asked, her voice breaking. “Just leave me alone,” I said angrily. Mia’s face looked sad, and she ran off. Days turned into weeks. I missed her laugh, her advice, the way she could always make me smile. But I was too proud to say sorry. One rainy afternoon, I saw Mia sitting under our big tree, tears mixing with raindrops. My chest hurt, but I walked past her.
Something lucky happened when I stayed late to finish a project. As I walked past the library, I heard a voice I knew. “I can’t believe you took her diary!” It was Sarah, shouting at a boy named Jake.

五、读后续写范文
“I just wanted to see what she wrote about me,” Jake said quietly. I was totally shocked. It turned out Jake stole my diary out of curiosity instead of Mia. I felt so guilty for wrongly suspecting my best friend and ignoring her these weeks. I hurried to ask Jake for my diary back and promised I would never misunderstand Mia again. All the misunderstanding was cleared up at once.
The next day, I went to find Mia under our tree. I apologized sincerely for my stupid suspicion and cold attitude. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I told her everything I had heard from Jake. Mia smiled softly and forgave me immediately. We hugged each other tightly and promised never to let misunderstanding separate us again. Our precious friendship returned as warm as before.
