Here are some wonderful festivals around the world that happen in spring.
Songkran — Thailand
Dates:13th —15th April
In Thailand, people celebrate a festival called Songkran, when people head out to the streets with water guns to spray (喷洒) everyone who walks past. It’s a very important traditional celebration in the country.
Naghol — Vanuatu
Dates: Every Saturday from April to May
Every year, villagers come together to celebrate the harvest of yams, an important part in the people's diet in Vanuatu. The festival is most famous for its “land diving (跳台跳跃仪式) ceremony”. During the ceremony men and boys dive to the ground from high wooden towers with only two thin vines (藤) tied to their feet.
Cherry Blossom Viewing — Japan
Dates: The cherry blossom season is different from year to year depending on the weather.
The festival is well-known. The Japanese celebrate the days when the flowers finally blossom. Only a few days later, the petals (花瓣) fall to the ground, like pink snowflakes. That means the traditional festival only lasts for several days. In Japan, almost everyone has picnics in the parks to view the flowers.
Sinhalese New Year — Sri Lanka
Dates:13th or 14th April
Just like in many other countries in South East Asia, this is the time when people celebrate the traditional New Year, an ancient celebration which marks the end of the harvest season and is one of two times of the year when the sun is straight above Sri Lanka. There are a lot of delicious foods during the celebration.

I didn’t always drink a lot of caffeine (咖啡因). I hardly enjoyed the taste of coffee until my mid-20s. But once I started working long hours from home, I soon needed a third cup of coffee just to feel the energy one used to give me. But by the end of the day, my heart felt like it was beating faster, I couldn’t relax, and it was difficult to fall asleep.
According to Dr. Giuseppe Aragona, an online doctor, caffeine dependence isn’t sustainable (可持续的). “Imagine your body like your finances. Running it on caffeine is the same as surviving through credit cards,” he said. “Eventually, the bank (your body in this case) will want to cash-in, and this makes it much more likely for you to become tired, lose focus, and-by the end of the day want to achieve nothing.”
So I decided to remove all caffeinated drinks from my life for two weeks, no matter how awful it felt. I started with three cups of lemon water in the morning, had a decaffeinated soda in the afternoon, and ended with a cup of tea. Though the effects, at first, were hardly the same, the act of getting up from my desk to refill my cup made the day a bit more bearable.
Dr. Aragona also told me that kicking all the caffeine could help me find a more natural body rhythm (节律) and reduce my anxiety levels. But along the way, he said I’d likely be sleepy. “Of course, you will still get tired, but this is natural, because all caffeine is doing is saving that for later — and likely to a greater degree after you force your body into overdrive,” he added.
The first three days were awful. I felt extremely tired, had really terrible headaches, and could barely make it to 10 a.m. without wanting to take a nap. After about a week, I felt like a different person. By the end of the two weeks, I felt a lot more in control of my mind, body, and life. And I didn’t miss caffeine as much as I thought I would.
4. Why did the author start to drink a lot of caffeine
A.To keep energetic.
B.To stay up late.
C.To enjoy the taste.
D.To fight severe stress.
5. What is a result of caffeine dependence according to Dr. Aragona
A.Financial difficulties.
B.Physical burnout.
C.Longer working hours.
D.Emotional breakdown

B.They overdrive their body.
C.Their body gets back to normal.
D.They want to take a nap.
7. Which of the following best describes the author’s experience of quitting caffeine
A.Tiring but interesting.
B.Boring but worthwhile.
C.Painful but rewarding.
D.Awkward but educational.

Electrification is a given for the car industry, at least according to the Volkswagen Group. The German carmaker forecasts 70 percent of the cars sold in Europe will be powered purely by batteries by 2030.
“Combustion engines (内燃机) will die,” says Michael Jost, former head of the Volkswagen Group. Jost, who is in charge of the carmaker’s critical move towards electricity, turns his attention to the waterfront. “After smart electric cars will come smart electric boats,” he predicts
However, to most US boaters, electric boats remain a nonstarter. Beyond having to go slow to conserve juice — which seems outright un-American to many boaters — most are afraid of getting stuck offshore with no assistance for miles. A few US builders now have electric designs, but they tend to be small ships for wakesurfing boats designed for a pre-office workout, and then going back to be recharged for another run.
Of course, there are obvious differences in the carmaking and shipbuilding industries. The VW Group makes 44,000 cars per day, while SILENT-YACHTS builds a dozen or so boats each year. Nevertheless, the electricity algorithms (算法) of the two products are similar. “We’ve already planned to adopt common technologies in the product development,” says Michael K hler, founder of SILENT-YACHTS. “We’ll shortly look for software and partners in the automotive industries who can help drive new technologies forward.”
There will be a generational shift in the shipbuilding industry. “We looked at the electricity reform taking place on land and in the air and wondered why the sea sector was so far behind,” said engineer Reo Baird. “That revolution is still years away. Yet in the last two years, new electric builders have continued to appear and other even more advanced alternative battery solutions have recently come.”
Just having an electric boat is not enough. Success will come down to the value of the brand and the kind of loyalty it develops among consumers as the market for electric boats expands.
8. Which of the following statements best reflects Jost's prediction
A.Electric boats have a bright future.
B.The combustion era has a long way to go.
C.Electric cars will replace traditional ones by 2030.
D.The future of the carmaking industry is uncertain.
9. What stops electric boats taking off among American boaters
A.The terrible after-sales service.
B.Their unappealing decoration.
C.Their limited sailing speed and range
D.The lack of charging stations in most ports.
10. What will K hler soon include in the development strategy of his company
A.Finding new markets for their electric boats.
B.Bringing in technologies used by electric cars.
C.Seeking closer cooperation with large shipbuilders.
D.Promoting their software in the carmaking industry.
11. What is Reo Baird’s attitude toward the rise of electric boats
A.Doubtful.
B.Negative.
C.Hopeful.
D.Unconcerned.

You’re rushing to work and a man ahead of you falls down. Do you stop to help In a study of by-standers, it was found that some people look away or keep on walking rather than stop and get involved.
“People tend to decide that no action is needed.” says Ervin Staub, a psychologist at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. “The first thoughts like “Why should I be the one to help ” often keep you from offering help.
Time and again, good and caring people fail to come to the aid of others. They know they should act and yet, for reasons they themselves don’t understand, people sometimes don’t respond. Why
One thing we know is that the more ambiguous a situation is, the less likely people are to help. Let’s say you see vapours (水汽) coming out of a building. You ask yourself, “Is it steam or smoke ” If you are not sure, you look to other people for a clue about how to react. If you see other people doing nothing, you think, “Of course, that’s just steam.” You don’t want it to be smoke, because then you would have to do something about it.
Another one is known as “the bystander effect“. This says that the more people there are observing an emergency, the less responsible each one of them personally feels. For example, if you are the only person in the world who can act to save someone in a dangerous situation, you are more likely to act. However, if you are one of 100,000 people who could save the situation, you would be happier if one of the other 99,999 people did it!
“If you notice trouble, force yourself to stop and judge the situation instead of walking on,” says Ervin Staub. Then try to involve other people, you don’t have to take on all the responsibility of being helpful. According to Staub, it is sometimes just a matter of turning to the person next to you and saying, “It looks like we should do something.” Once you take action, most people will take their cues (提示) from you and also help.
12. What may cause some people’s failure to help according to the study
A.They don’t know how to help.
B.They think it’s none of their business.
C.They fear their help may be rejected.
D.They expect others to act.
13. What does the underlined word “ambiguous” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Difficult.
B.Dangerous.
C.Unclear.
D.Unpleasant.
14. What does “the bystander effect” show
A.The majority of people have the same idea.
B.More people, less responsibility
C.Many hands make light work.
D.People usually think twice before they act.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A.Stick to Your Decision
B.Don’t Just Stand There
C.It’s the Thought That Counts
D.To Help or Not, it’s a Question

Another big plus Badminton is a sport the whole family can enjoy. ____20____. This not only encourages teens to stay active but also reduces their screen time — a major concern for parents in the digital age. C.Many parents play badminton with their teens on weekends, turning it into a fun bonding activity

Takehito was daydreaming when he heard a voice. “And what performance will you present at the talent show, Takehito ” Takehito’s fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. Klein, had spoken and was glaring down at him now.
Takehito had been staring out the window from his desk while Mrs. Klein paced up and down the rows of desks to ask each student what talent he or she would perform for the show. The rest of the class and Takehito’s teacher were now staring and waiting for his answer.
Takehito’s face popped beet-red. He didn’t know what to say. Luckily for him, the bell rang, signaling the end of the school day. Takehito quickly gathered his books and got up to leave, but Mrs. Klein stopped him.
Actually, Mrs. Klein worried about Takehito. Last year, he and his mother immigrated from Japan to Chicago. He had not made friends easily. Some of the students in his old class made fun of the way he looked and the way he spoke. Therefore, as his teacher this year, Mrs. Klein was determined to get Takehito to perform in the talent show, knowing that if he did, he would establish some friendships before entering junior high.
“What are you good at ” asked Mrs. Klein.
Takehito, thought for a moment. “I don’t know.”
“What do you mean ” Mrs. Klein continued. “Can you draw Can you play a sport Can you play a musical instrument Can you sing
Mrs. Klein continued listing talents, but Takehito stopped listening as his gazing wandered to a poster on the wall. The poster showed a person doing breakdance (霹雳舞).
“Dancing. I will breakdance!” Takehito interrupted.
Mrs. Klein’s eyes lit up with encouragement. “That’s fantastic, Takehito! Breakdancing is a great choice. I’m sure you’ll do an amazing job.” Her smile was reassuring, and she added, “The talent show is three months away, so you have plenty of time to prepare. I’ll be here to help you prepare if you need it.”

That evening, Takehito sat at the dinner table with his mother. He told her about the talent show and his sudden decision to do breakdance. His mother smiled warmly, saying she was proud he wanted to show himself in front of classmates. They searched for free dance videos online and made a daily practice plan. Every after-school, Takehito practiced basic moves in the living room, falling down many times but never giving up. His mother always cheered him on and helped him adjust his moves.
The three months slipped by in a flash, and the day of the talent show was finally here. When Takehito stepped onto the stage, his hands shook a little at first. But as the music played, he forgot his nervousness and performed every move perfectly. Loud applause burst out as he finished. Many classmates came up to praise him after the show. Takehito made several new friends that day, realizing taking a brave step brought him warmth and friendship.
