“Do it now. Jump up on that box now,” Sabrina Reiswig, the coach yells.
Tim Bannon, 14, born without arms, gives it a try. He comes up short trying to jump onto the 20-inch platform.
“On the box,” Reiswig yells. “Do it again.”
He misses again, but refuses to quit.
This is NubAbility, an organization committed to instructing and motivating young amputee (被截肢者) athletes like Tim. The camp gets its inspiration from its coaches, who are also amputees. Coach Sabrina Reiswig, who has been an amputee since she was 8, shows no mercy to Tim at this moment.
“He was pacing,” Reiswig said. “He was upset. He was kind of frustrated with himself.”
Eventually, Tim sticks the landing. He falls into Reiswig’s arm and begins to cry. That moment has gained more than 4 million views on Twitter and more than 500,000 likes on Instagram. “ ‘Can’t’ is not allowed at our camp,” said founder and coach Sam Kuhnert, who was born without his left hand.
Box jumps are typically performed by swinging both arms forward with strength toward the box. Without arms, Tim was essentially jumping without momentum, which is much more challenging. It’s also riskier, as he wouldn’t have been able to break a potential fall. “We have those arms to catch us, to keep our face from hitting,” Kuhnert said. “Of course, he has those coaches there to catch him if he needed to, but he’s essentially risking injury each time he attempts to jump up on that box.”
Kuhnert says this resilience (复原力) represents the culture at NubAbility. “We’re not a support group,” he said. “We’re not a group that’s going to reach down a hand to help a kid up. We’re going to teach the kids what they need to pick themselves up.”
4. What is NubAbility aimed to do for young amputee athletes
A.Run camps for them to recover.
B.Attract public attention to them.
C.Provide emotional support for them.
D.Train them to face challenges head-on.
5. What do we know about the coaches of NubAbility
A.They treat young amputee athletes badly.
B.They put great pressure on young amputee athletes.
C.They are always ready to comfort young amputee athletes.
D.They discourage negative self-talk among young amputee athletes.
6. What does the underlined word momentum in paragraph 8 mean
A.Faith. B.Force. C.Courage. D.Balance.
7. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.Beyond Limits: The Inspiring Journey at NubAbility Camp.
B.Embracing Challenges: The Impact of Adaptive Sports Training.
C.Pursuing Excellence: The Challenging Journey of Amputee Coaches.
D.No Excuses Allowed: The Hardship of Amputee Athletic Development.

Does studying philosophy (哲学) really make people better thinkers To test this claim, as researchers, we looked at data from more than 600,000 US college graduates, compared philosophy students with those in every other field, and published our findings in the Journal of the American Philosophical Association.
The results were clear. By the end of their senior year, philosophy students did much better than all other students on tests of language and logical reasoning (逻辑推理). They also reported stronger virtues, including curiosity and open-mindedness.
Why does philosophy have such an effect Different from many fields that focus on specific knowledge, philosophy is best understood as a method of research. It asks questions about human life and the universe and then tests possible answers. Doing philosophy means building logical reasoning, recognizing hidden assumptions (假设), and arriving at their often surprising conclusions. These habits of mind enable students to think more clearly and carefully from different aspects.
This benefit matters far beyond the classroom. At a time when public trust in higher education is at historic lows and AI is reshaping the workplace, the need for critical thinking has never been greater. AI can generate (生成) information quickly, but it cannot decide what is true or meaningful. If we humans don’t examine AI-generated information, our life is at risk.
Our research does not claim that philosophy alone guarantees wisdom or moral virtue. Intellectual (智力上的) skills can be used for selfish purposes as well as for justice. But the evidence showed that studying philosophy helps us develop habits of thought that are measurable and lasting. It gives students the tools to question assumptions, face uncertainty, and make thoughtful choices in an ever-changing world.
In short, philosophy is not beyond us — it is a necessity. It trains the mind, strengthens judgment, and prepares people to meet future challenges with courage.
8. How did the researchers carry out the study
A.By interviewing philosophy students.
B.By reviewing earlier studies.
C.By comparing data of graduates.
D.By analyzing graduates’ behavior.
9. What makes philosophy students better thinkers, according to Paragraph 3
A.Their thirst for knowledge.
B.Their curiosity for mysteries.
C.Their critical thinking skills.
D.Their language and logical training.
10. Why does philosophy matter in today’s world
A.It is changing the workplace worldwide.
B.It gives us wisdom and a sense of justice.
C.It better prepares us for complex realities.
D.It helps rebuild public trust in higher education.
11. What can we infer from the text
A.Philosophy matters more than AI in modern society.
B.Philosophy students are the smartest among graduates.
C.Philosophy students adapt well to the changing workplace.
D.We need to study some philosophy to face the uncertain future.
D
It’s a surprising fact that over the past 20,000 years, the human brain has decreased in size by about 10% — a change that seems controversial as human civilization keeps advancing. This puzzling phenomenon has motivated widespread curiosity among scientists and the public, with several mainstream and reasonable explanations.
Early humans relied entirely on their brains to track animals during hunting, distinguish safe plants from poisonous ones in the wild, and remember complex survival skills passed down from generation to generation. But now, with tools like calculators and smartphones, mature writing systems, and the convenient Internet, we can easily store and process information externally. For example, we no longer need to memorize a large number of mathematical formulas or complicated addresses by heart, as electronic devices can help us record and recover them quickly. Thus, the brain no longer needs to maintain a large size to carry more memories and skills.
As humans turned to farming from hunting and gathering, their diet shifted from wild animals and fruits to grains and cooked food, which are more advanced and easier to pared with the unstable diet in the hunting-gathering era, this kind of regular diet provides energy more efficiently. Since the brain consumes nearly 20% of the body’s total energy, it can contract appropriately without affecting normal functions, helping the body save energy for other important activities.
Group cooperation may be another key factor. Humans live in groups, sharing knowledge and dividing labor. Some people specialize in technology research, some in medical care, and others in education and management. Individual brains do not need to be omnipotent. The clear division of labor and close cooperation among group members ensure the group’s high efficiency, leading individual brain size to tend to be smaller.
In fact, brain size is not directly linked to intelligence. The contracting brain may be a sign of human evolution adapting to the living environment, helping us save energy and better integrate into social life.
12. Why is the brain change a puzzling phenomenon
A.Its scale is considerable.
B.Its explanations are lacking.
C.It contradicts human progress.
D.It has been ongoing for ages.
13. Which of the following is a cause of a smaller human brain
A.Universal human laziness.
B.Lessened memory load.
C.Demands for high efficiency.
D.Irregular eating habits.
14. What does the underlined word “omnipotent” in paragraph 4 mean
A.All-powerful. B.Discontinuous. C.Passive. D.Consistent.
15. What does the text mainly talk about
A.The explanation of human’s smaller brain.
B.The process of human brain contracting.
C.Brain size makes no difference to intelligence.
D.Human civilization promotes brain growth.

A few days before, I tried clearing out some old schoolbooks. Deep down, I knew I would never read them again. Yet I realized with myself that maybe they would be helpful someday. ____16____ I am probably not alone in this: this struggle is a phenomenon known as the “Endowment Effect (禀赋效应)”.
Psychologists who demonstrated the effect found that people demanded a much higher price to sell a bottle of wine they owned than they were willing to pay to buy that same bottle. ____17____ It explains why we are so unwilling to give something up once we own it.
Why does this happen At first, researchers thought it was a classic case of “loss aversion”, where the pain of losing something feels twice as strong as the pleasure of gaining it. ____18____ Psychologists conclude that we value something more simply because it is ours. We project our identity onto the object, making it painful to move on.
Fortunately, there is an effective counteraction: shifting your perspective from an “owner” to a “buyer”. When you are hesitating to throw something away, ask yourself: “How much would I pay to buy this from others now ” ____19____ If that is the case, it is a clear sign you value the item not for its usefulness, but simply for the endowment effect.
____20____ Besides turning our homes into storage units for the past, it makes us mentally trapped in them as well. Recognizing this is the first step toward the liberation of living with less. Make space for what truly matters.
A.It just feels right to keep them.
B.More often than not, the answer is “nothing”.
C.Thus, a price gap exists between buyers and sellers.
D.White noise acts like a crowd of thousands talking.
E.We often mistakenly believe these items define who we are.
F.That sounds logical, but the real reason is the sense of ownership itself.
G.The inconsistency reveals we overvalue things just because we possess them.

Be smart online learners
It’s a great honor for me to deliver a speech titled “Be smart online learners”.
Online learning brings us rich learning resources and flexible schedules, allowing us to study anytime anywhere. However, it also has drawbacks. Without strict self-discipline, many students get distracted by games or short videos, wasting plenty of study time.
Here are my suggestions. First, make a clear learning plan and stick to it. Second, stay away from disturbing apps while studying. Third, take notes carefully and communicate with teachers online in time when confused.
Let’s be smart online learners and make full use of online resources. Thank you!
Yours,
Li Hua
