From an early age, Edward Norton was taught what protecting the environment really requires. His father, an environmental lawyer, founded the Grand Canyon Trust and his grandfather was a pioneer in low-income housing policy.
Norton built his own career in a different field, becoming one of his generation’s most respected actors. When Norton first became famous, he concluded that he wasn’t interested in ordinary celebrity ambassador work. “I am not interested in being some weak sauce kind of spokesperson,” he says. “It’s not that I don’t believe those things are important, but that held no nourishment for me.”
What does nourish Norton is his work with a Kenya-based organization called the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust, which helps the Maasai people to make a living from their land through innovative means. One project that Norton is particularly proud of channels profits from the sale of carbon offsets (碳补偿) to local Maasai communities who use that money to support health, education, and conservation initiatives.
One challenge that concerns Norton would be familiar to his father and grandfather: raising funds. This led Norton to a realization. “We can’t have the conservation movement depend only on donor-funded charity,” he says, “It not only can’t scale; it’s fundamentally unstable.”
A new model is needed. Norton and his partners argue that tourist dollars being spent in fragile places ought to remain in-country — or better yet, in-community. Norton and his team have started a company called Conservation Equity that will invest in tourism in critical places and will reinvest its profits locally, instead of paying distant shareholders.
Norton is optimistic about the model’s prospects, “I think what we are doing has no previous example to follow. The needs of people are not going to take a lower priority to the spiritual value of nature. If protecting and restoring nature can’t produce a stronger and more reliable economy, the effort will fail.”
4. How did Norton feel about being a typical celebrity spokesperson
A.Enthusiastic.
B.Tolerant.
C.Dissatisfied.
D.Confused.
5. What helped the author decide on his future career
A.Discussing with his former teachers.
B.Looking back at what he truly loved.
C.Learning from other students’ choices.
D.Finding a job in science communication.
6. Why did the author choose to finish his PhD
A.He was advised to do so by experts.
B.He thought it might benefit him later.
C.He wanted to prove himself to others.
D.He had no better plan for the moment.
7. What can we learn from the author’s story
A.A dead end can lead to a new start.
B.Learning should be a gradual process.
C.Hard work always pays off in the end.
D.Joy can only be found in a job one loves.

An ancient Latin proverb says “Aquila non capit muscas” — eagles don’t hunt flies —meaning that important ones shouldn’t concern themselves with small, insignificant matters. But the lions in East Africa should concern themselves with the seemingly insignificant ants, because these ants are changing their lifestyles.
The story starts with the acacia trees (金合欢树) in an African wildlife area in central Kenya. Some of these acacia trees provide food and shelter for specific ant species, which in turn defend the tree against herbivores (食草动物). The ants are actively attacking and driving away herbivores that attempt to feed on the tree’s leaves. This is highly effective; the ants not only physically harm the herbivores but also release chemicals that can deter other potential attackers.
But these ants are in trouble. Another species called the “big-headed” ant is destroying entire groups of tree-protecting ants. This, in turn, sets off an entire chain of events that ends up influencing when and how lions can hunt.
This ant invasion (入侵) affects one thing after the other. It leaves the acacia trees defenseless against herbivores especially elephants. The elephants come in and eat the acacias at five to seven times the rate observed in uninvaded areas. The lions, while hunting for food, have no more trees to use for hiding. This reduced tree cover makes lions less successful at hunting and pushes them to find different areas to hunt in.
“These tiny invaders are pulling on the ties that put an African ecosystem together, determining who is eaten and where,” said Todd Palmer, an ecologist from Florida.
The lions, which are already endangered, are managing to cope with this by no longer focusing their attention on zebras. The zebras, of course, can see them much better on the approach given the lack of cover. Instead, they are targeting water buffalo. But this also isn’t the end of the story. Who knows what the lions’ changing strategy will mean for the ecosystem down the line
8. What does the underlined word “deter” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Direct.
B.Discourage.
C.Identify.
D.Seek.
9. What role do the elephants play in the chain reaction

10. The author mentions lions, zebras and water buffalo to show that ________.
A.animals fall victim to bigger ones.
B.the ecology is on the road to recovery
C.all species are closely connected in the ecosystem
D.species are firmly positioned in the fixed food chain
11. What is the text mainly about

The growing interaction between humans and artificial intelligence (AI) is shaping a new way of thinking, known as System 0. This new cognitive (认知的) framework exists outside the human mind and works as an external “thinking assistant”. System 0 works alongside the two established models of human thought: System l, which is fast, intuitive (直觉的) , and automatic, and System 2, which is slower, more analytical, and reflective.
Just as an external drive allows us to store data that are not present on the computer, and we can work by connecting our drive to a PC wherever we are. AI, with its powerful processing and data-handling capabilities, can represent an external circuit to the human brain capable of enhancing it. Hence the idea of System 0, which is essentially a form of “external” thinking that relies on the capabilities of AI.
By managing enormous amounts of data, AI can process information and provide suggestions based on complex algorithms (算法). However, unlike intuitive or analytical thinking, System 0 can perform calculations, make predictions, and generate responses without truly “understanding” the content of the data it works with.
The integration of system 0 into human cognition raises some concerns. One of the most pressing ones is the potential damage to our critical thinking and reasoning abilities. If we blindly trust the output of system 0 without questioning it, we risk losing our ability to think independently, leading to a weaker capacity for innovation and creativity. At the same time, it is important to acknowledge the potential benefits of system 0 in increasing our cognitive capabilities and addressing complex challenges that may be beyond the capacity of human intelligence alone.
Despite the polarized visions on the topic of the evolution of AI, we recommend that this revolutionary system be the object of a deep, shared reflection on how we plan to integrate it into the future of human thought. To ensure that AI remains a tool to enhance — rather than decrease — our cognitive autonomy, clear boundaries must be established.
12. What is the purpose of paragraph 1
A.To state AI’s influence on daily life.
B.To introduce a new cognitive model System 0.
C.To compare three different thinking systems.
D.To discuss AI’s role in people’s decision-making.
13. Which can best describe the essence of System 0
A.A deep meaning seeker.
B.An analytical thinking pioneer.
C.A smart independent decision-maker.
D.An external tool to improve human thinking.
14. What is the author’s tone carried in paragraph 4
A.Pushy.
B.Indifferent.
C.Objective.
D.Dismissive.
15. What will the follow-up paragraph most probably talk about
A.Moral dilemmas in human-AI integration.
B.Possibly promising prospects of System 0.
C.Technical challenges in sharpening System 0.
D.Specific rules to use System 0 with critical minds.

Get Better at Saying No
When rejecting a request, “no” is a short, simple word that can cause anxiety for the person trying to say it. The following strategies can help you get better at saying no. Be intentional about what you communicate.
___16___ Sure, but as psychologist Vanessa Bohns points out, only saying a “no” is often pretty uncomfortable for the asker. Instead, she advises communicating three things: “It’s not because of me, it’s not because of you, and it’s not because of us.” One way to do that is by thanking people for thinking of you. ___17___ Then, follow up with a short explanation: “I wish I could, but I just don’t have the time right now.” That helps make it clear that your “no” isn’t a poor reflection of your own character; it’s not the other person; and it’s not a disapproval of the relationship, Bohns says. Have a planned phrase for more informal encounters.
Not every situation, of course, calls for such a thoughtful approach. Think through times when you’ve gotten stressed over delivering a quick “no”, and then brainstorm phrases you could use in the future. Bohns, for example, is often asked to donate to some cause or another as she checks out at the grocery store. ___18___ “It’s true, and it’s a way of saying, essentially, that I’m still a good person,” she says.
___19___
There’s always that one guy who won’t take “no” for an answer. If someone is applying too much pressure, adopt what psychologist Ellen Hendriksen describes as the broken-record technique. ___20___ Occasionally, the asker will get annoyed, but usually after repeating yourself two or three times, even the most persistent (执着的) people will get the message.
A.She says no directly.
B.That is, stick to your answer repeatedly.
C.Remember to plan your travel in advance.
D.A solo trip can bring far more to you than you think.
E.You should also take a close look at what you actually want.
F.You might hear that “no” is a convenient word for declining requests.
G.This makes them relieved that they didn’t do anything wrong by asking.
