Leigh Ann Sondrup, a devoted nurse at Valleywise, earned the title of a hero after a remarkable off-duty rescue.
The exciting story happened as Sondrup drove home after work. She had just finished four night shifts in a row, so she was really tired. Her eyes felt heavy, and she just wanted to get home and sleep right away. But when she drove on State Route 143 near Sky Harbor Airport, she suddenly saw a terrible sight far ahead. As she got closer, her heart sank: a big concrete truck had turned over on the road, and a man was stuck inside. Smoke was coming from the truck, and the man was crying out in pain.
At that moment, no emergency workers had arrived yet. Even though Sondrup was exhausted, she didn’t think twice — she knew she had to help. She quickly pulled her car over to the side of the road. Luckily, no other cars were moving on the busy highway just then, so she could walk across safely.
She ran to the overturned truck and quickly checked the situation. Through the broken window, she saw the driver was still awake, but he was badly hurt. Blood was flowing from his wound at a fast speed — every second mattered! Sondrup didn’t feel scared. She carefully crawled under the truck, avoiding sharp metal parts. With quick thinking, she found the man’s belt and used it to tie around his wound tightly to stop the bleeding.
Months later, the man — who had been in a very dangerous condition — found Sondrup to say thanks. He told her that she had given him a second chance at life. The Phoenix Fire Department also praised Sondrup for her brave actions. When asked about what she did, Sondrup smiled and said, “I firmly believe everyone has a purpose in life. I was just glad I could do my part when someone needed help.”

From checking social media every minute to being lost in computer games, we tend to overuse technology. “For many people, a moment without your phone or laptop in sight can feel like a lifetime,” the Daily Mail commented.
A computer model called Mindy may make many people to think twice. A team from the US-based company Toll Free Forwarding built a 3-D model to uncover the harmful effects technology can have on human bodies in less than 800 years.
“Spending hours looking down at your phone harms your neck and throws your spine (脊椎) off balance,” explained Caleb Backe, a health and wellness expert in the US. Then, the muscles in our neck need to spend extra effort to support the head, making our back bent (驼背) and neck wide. “The way we hold our phones can cause stress in certain points of contact — causing text claw (手机手) ,” Nikola Djordjevic, a practicing physician in Serbia, told the team. It affects the elbows too, causing pain in the arm. That’s why Mindy has a 90-degree elbow, and her hands look like she’s always holding a mobile phone.
Some people also commented that human evolution (进化) may not work this way. They believe that only features with actual benefits would be kept throughout the years. For example, features that can increase the rate of survival, instead of the negative influence of technology. However, current human lifestyles still raise concerns. A model called Emma was built by researchers in the UK in 2019 to show how the way people work at their desks could change them in 20 years.
The research team built Emma based on the health issues mentioned by over 3,000 workers in France, Germany and the UK. Emma’s back stays bent, and her legs are swollen (肿胀的) due to the time people spend in front of computers. With little time spent outdoors and in the sun, her skin is gray, too.
28. What’s the function of Paragraph 1
A.To start a debate.
B.To give suggestions.
C.To introduce the topic.
D.To add background information.
29. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A.The bad effects of mobile phones on our bodies.
B.The time people spend on the mobile phones.
C.The influence of the computer model.
D.The advanced design of Mindy.
30. What does Emma look like
A.Beautiful.
B.Tall.
C.Thin.
D.Unhealthy.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Two Models Serve As Human Helpers
B.More Attention Shall Be Paid to Our Necks
C.People Should Stay Away from Computer Games
D.Technology Might Change Our Body Shape

Listening to music after surgery seems to ease a patient’s pain and anxiety, which could be a cheap and easy way to reduce painkiller (止痛药) use.
“Many people, when they are awakening from anesthesia (麻醉), are lost,” says Eldo Frezza at California Northstate University College of Medicine. “They have anxiety or maybe they feel pain of the surgery (外科手术).” Research has repeatedly shown that music can be calming, which encouraged Frezza and his colleagues to investigate if it may help after an operation.
The team analyzed the results of 35 studies that explored how listening to music immediately after surgery affected people’s pain, anxiety, heart rate and painkiller use.
Each study involved about 100 people, half of whom were asked to listen to music, of different genres, after abdominal (腹部的) or bone-related surgery. The studies varied in how long the participants did this, ranging from half an hour to until they were discharged. The other participants who were matched to the former group for age, sex and surgery type didn’t listen to music after their procedures.
After comparing, Frezza’s team found that music seemed to reduce pain levels by about 20 percent, on average. Those who listened to music also required less than half as much painkiller while in hospital as those who did not.
The team also found that listening to music seems to reduce anxiety. It lowered heart rates by around 4.5 beats per minute, on average, and reduced self-reported anxiety levels by about 2.5 points.
“A 2.5-point reduction is pretty small, but it’s moving in the direction we want it to go,” says Annie Heiderscheit at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, UK. “Music alleviates pain by boosting levels of a signaling molecule called serotonin (血清素) that passes between brain cells and makes us feel good.” she adds.
“Future research should include large studies. This would give a more reliable result than combining the results of previous small studies.” Eldo Frezza says.
32. What inspired Frezza and his team to study the effect of music after surgery
A.The high cost of painkillers.
B.The patients’ strong requests.
C.The lack of effective post-operative treatments.
D.The previous research on music’s calming effect.
33. How did Frezza’s team find that music after surgery seemed to reduce pain and anxiety
A.By listing data.
B.By giving examples.
C.By making comparisons.
D.By doing surveys.
34. What does the underlined word “alleviates” mean
A.Attracts.
B.Increases.
C.Promotes.
D.Relieves.
35. What does Frezza suggest about future research
A.Stopping doing research.
B.Carrying out large-scale studies.
C.Interviewing the study participants.
D.Focusing on different types of music.

Growing up in a poor area, I had a great love for architecture (建筑) in cities, and I hoped to design buildings myself someday. However, as my degree progressed, I became interested in research and wanted to continue my studies. I wasn’t sure what to study. Then a flood in my hometown came, and it all became clear.
After spending much of my summer volunteering in affected communities, I decided to focus on natural disasters, exploring the various factors behind them, as well as their influences on society. As a first step, I applied for a master’s programme in development studies, which includes coursework in sustainable (可持续的) development, geography, and economics, as well as hands-on community projects. This decision shocked my friends and family. Relatives kept asking my parents why I was leaving engineering to study social sciences. They warned my parents that this path might make it hard for me to find a job.
However, I was determined and went ahead with what I thought was right for me. The programme which contained projects that helped communities plan for natural emergencies made me believe that I was on the right path. I decided to apply for a Ph. D. But I found that many universities preferred applicants who had consistent (一致的) academic backgrounds. Thus during interviews, teachers often questioned why I chose to risk my career by changing fields. I received many refusals. But one programme agreed to accept me, and I set out to study what I determined to.
I was excited to start the programme and be with some of the brightest minds in the country. It wasn’t easy, though. Most of my partners had followed a traditional path, without jumping around between fields. I sometimes felt unsure about my depth of knowledge. I also had trouble connecting with my partners at times, leaving me feeling lonely. My feelings of loneliness began to change with the arrival of a new Ph. D. student, Paul. He also had a similar situation.
Meeting Paul really made me feel much better.

AI Voice in Music
Now AI can copy singers’ voices to make them sing any song. I think it has both good and bad sides. It lets amateurs create interesting works easily, but it may steal singers’ copyrights and hurt their income.
I have two suggestions. First, makers should get singers’ permission before using their voices. Second, schools should teach students to respect artistic copyright. Only in this way can AI develop healthily in music.

Meeting Paul really made me feel much better. We shared the same trouble of switching majors and being misunderstood. We spent lots of time discussing our research on disaster prevention, exchanging useful materials and encouraging each other when we felt self-doubting. We also decided to cooperate on a community survey project about flood defense plans.
Our efforts began to show results. Our joint research paper was praised by professors for its unique cross-disciplinary perspective. More classmates started to communicate with us and valued our different research ideas. I no longer felt lonely. I realized that diverse academic backgrounds are not weaknesses but special strengths that bring new angles to research.
