Encarna Ales was taken out of school when she was just 8 years old. Now 74, the Spanish grandmother is still unable to read or write.
Ales loves to call her friends and family. Though she managed well enough, she is still unable to read people’s names in her contact book. Thankfully, she has a good grandson who developed a creative method to deal with her problem and kept it over many years.
Since Pedro Ortega was 11 years old, he has been drawing small pictures that correspond (符合) with his grandmother’s contact phone numbers. This way, she can identify the number based on its drawing, rather than its name. Ortega has been adding new drawings to his grandmother’s phone book for the last 20 years.
“Every time I’m back home, I sit down and add new drawings for her,” the 31-year-old said. “It has become something special between the two of us.”
While there may be obvious drawings to correspond with more common numbers, such as the hospital or the doctor, Ortega has even found a way to identify his grandmother’s personal connections, too.
Whenever they sit down to write down the phone number of a friend, Ales picks an object that reminds her of the person she knows, such as a sunflower. “On every page and for every number, I would draw a picture that she felt would identify the person she wanted to call,” Ortega told the news station. “It was something we thought of together,” he added. “She says something distinctive about every person and I draw it out for her. It’s a system we’ve had for twenty years.”
Ortega recently published photos of his artworks on social media where they have been shared thousands of times by people praising his work of love.

When 16-year-old Li Ming struggled with math last year, he tried an AI tutoring (辅导) app. “It explains problems step by step, just like a real teacher,” he says. “Now I can finish my homework without asking my parents for help.”
AI tutors are becoming popular in China’s schools. These apps use intelligent technology to understand students’ mistakes. For example, if a student often makes errors in math, the app will create special practice exercises. Unlike human teachers, AI tutors are available 24 / 7 and can adapt to each student’s learning speed.
However, some teachers worry about this trend. “AI can’t replace human interaction,” says Ms. Zhang, an English teacher with 10 years’ experience. “Students need to learn how to communicate their ideas, not just get answers from a machine.” She adds that face-to-face discussions help develop critical (批判性的) thinking skills, which AI cannot provide.
Experts believe the solution is to combine AI with traditional teaching. “AI is a tool, not a replacement,” says Professor Chen from Beijing Normal University. “Good teachers will use AI to check homework and find students’ weak points, then spend more time on creative activities in class.”
For students like Li Ming, AI tutors have been a game-changer. “I used to hate math,” he says. “Now I feel confident. The app even gives me stars when I get answers right!” But he also agrees that AI can’t replace his teachers. “My math teacher still helps me understand difficult concepts that the app can’t explain clearly.”
As AI technology develops, it will continue to change education. The key is to use it wisely — to help students learn better while keeping the human touch in classrooms.
8. What can AI tutoring apps do according to the text
A.Replace human teachers completely.
B.Teach students critical thinking skills.
C.Create personalized practice exercises.
D.Give stars to students in real classrooms.
9. Why do some teachers worry about AI tutors
A.They often give wrong answers to students.
B.They cannot explain difficult math problems.
C.They make students spend less time on homework.
D.They may reduce students’ face-to-face communication.
10. What does Professor Chen think about the use of AI in education
A.He doubts if AI can help students learn better.
B.He thinks teachers should stop using AI tools.
C.He supports combining AI with human teaching.
D.He believes AI should replace traditional teaching.
11. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about
A.The advantages and limitations of AI tutors.
B.The future development of AI in education.
C.How AI tutors help students build confidence.
D.Why students prefer AI tutors to human teachers.

There are always two sides to a story. Unfortunately, when it comes to the history of Thanksgiving, generations of Americans have been taught a one-sided history in homes and schools.
The mainstream cultural and historical story has been told by the white settlers who landed near Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts in 1620. In this version of the Thanksgiving story, the holiday celebrates the peaceful, friendly meeting of English settlers and the Wampanoag tribe (部落) for three days of feasting and thanksgiving in 1621.
This story paints a picture of courageous settlers braving the dangers of the New World and with the help of some friendly natives, finding a way to make a new life for themselves. Very few teachers get a chance to tell students about the mass killing of native tribes that took place in the years that followed.
For many Native Americans, Thanksgiving is a day of mourning (哀悼) and protest. Organised by the United American Indians of New England in 1970, the fourth Thursday in November (Thanksgiving) was recognised as the National Day of Mourning for Native Americans.
While some Native Americans have chosen to reject the Thanksgiving holiday completely, many welcome the positive messages of the holiday without consideration of its origin. This is because the idea of giving thanks is central to Native Americans’ culture, and in this way, Thanksgiving is simply a chance to appreciate the good things in life, like family, community, and the riches of the land.
Steven Peters, a Wampanoag tribe spokesman, was asked about his views on Thanksgiving and the fact that most Native Americans still gather to eat turkey and give thanks.
“I think it’s great. My ancestors had four harvest festivals throughout the year. Gathering with family and giving thanks for all that we have is a good thing. But I ask that you take a moment on that day to remember what happened to my people and the history as it was and not what had been written in the history books.”
12. What can be learnt about the mainstream Thanksgiving story
A.It is a faithful reflection of the history.
B.It mourns the suffering of the natives.
C.It represents only one side of the story.
D.It is about the real origin of Thanksgiving.
13. What does the underlined word “reject” in paragraph 5 mean
A.refuse
B.reflect
C.promote
D.celebrate
14. Why do many Native Americans celebrate Thanksgiving
A.They are misled by history books.
B.They have adapted to modern life.
C.The history has taught them to be grateful.
D.The idea of giving thanks fits their culture.
15. What can we infer from Steven Peters’ words in Paragraph 7
A.He considers Thanksgiving a festival only for white settlers.
B.He values gratitude and hopes people learn the real history.
C.He suggests stopping Thanksgiving to honor his people.
D.He believes history books tell the truth about Native Americans.

Alex and Ben had been best friends since kindergarten. They shared everything, from snacks to secrets, and especially their passion for photography. Ben had saved up every penny from his allowance for a whole year to buy a professional camera, which quickly became his most prized possession — he even kept it in a soft case and cleaned the lens (镜片) every single day.
One weekend, Alex asked to borrow the camera for a school photography contest. Ben hesitated for a second, his fingers brushing the camera’s case softly, but then he smiled and handed it over, saying sincerely, “Please be careful. It’s my baby.”
Excited beyond words, Alex took the camera on a hiking trip to a remote mountain, determined to get the perfect shot of a hidden waterfall at sunrise. The trail was damp (潮湿的) and muddy after the previous night’s rain. As he climbed a slippery rock to get a better shot, his foot suddenly slipped. He waved his arms and managed to grab a tree branch to save himself, but the camera swung wildly from his hand and crashed against a sharp stone. When he picked it up, his heart sank — the lens was completely broken.
Panic set in instantly. Alex stood frozen on the rock, his hands trembling as he stared at the broken camera. He knew exactly how much this camera meant to Ben. It was more than just a camera; it was the fruit of a year’s worth of patience and hard work. Instead of gathering his courage to tell Ben the truth immediately, Alex chose to run away from the problem. He avoided Ben at school, didn’t answer any of his calls or text messages, and even skipped their usual lunch meetups at the cafeteria, where they used to sit together and talk about their latest photos.

Days turned into weeks, the secret made Alex feel worse. Every time he saw Ben walking alone in the hallway, guilt washed over him. He could no longer stand hiding the truth. He decided to save money to repair the lens and say sorry to Ben. He cut down all his pocket money and bought a new lens. With the broken camera and new lens in his bag, he headed to Ben’s home.
Alex walked to Ben’s house, holding the damaged camera in his hands. He told Ben the whole story with his head down, ready to accept blame. Unexpectedly, Ben patted his shoulder softly. He said friendship mattered more than the camera. They fixed the camera together and took photos side by side again, their bond stronger than ever before.
