一、阅读理解
A
Shortly after graduating from college, I moved to a new city to begin my first full-time job. One day, I suddenly felt a strong desire to travel. Since I didn’t know anyone there, I realized it was the perfect chance to take my very first solo (单人的) journey. I immediately started researching possible destinations.
I had never traveled by myself before, especially overseas, so I decided to sign up for a guided group heading to Thailand for rock climbing. This gave me a sense of safety as a beginner in solo travel. It seemed like an ideal way to ease into being alone: I could meet new people while taking part in something fun and engaging for 2 weeks.
The trip to Thailand pushed me far beyond my comfort zone and became a major turning point in my life. Navigating airports and taxis alone, meeting a group of complete strangers, and spending 2 weeks climbing with them far from cities ended up being some of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. Until then, I had always considered myself a shy and cautious woman, but this adventure lit me up to become different. It showed me a brave, strong, and self-sufficient side of myself that would go on to influence my life in powerful ways after I returned home.
Back in my country, I spent as much time as possible outdoors: climbing, hiking, or backpacking — activities that I once believed were too difficult or frightening for me. Now, about 6 years later, I work as an outdoor empowerment coach and backpacking educator.
My trip to Thailand was the spark that set everything in motion. It showed me what I was truly capable of. I’m not sure whether it was the people I met, the challenges I faced, or simply the beauty of traveling in Thailand — probably a mix of all three — but whatever it was, it changed the course of my life. And Thailand will always hold a special place in my heart.

When I was 15, I was a straight A student with a great group of friends I’d known since childhood. Then I moved to a new place just before high school, and everything changed.
Adapting to a public school in a big city was much harder than my tiny old classroom. Teachers hardly knew my name, and classmates saw me as the quiet newcomer who listened to unique music. All I did, every day after school, was draw. My sketchbook (素描簿) was my only real friend, and it never let me down.
At school, an English teacher noticed I was struggling. He told me I could attend a voluntary tutoring program twice a week for students who wanted extra support. Eager to get a better grade, I went. That’s where I met Oliver. He was a funny guy who didn’t say much and, like me, was a new student. When he saw me drawing, he came over to say hi. Then he pulled out his own sketchbook, and asked what I was drawing. Slowly but surely, he became my close friend. We hung out all the time, and drew together. He didn’t say much, but I wasn’t alone anymore. And gradually, my grades improved too.
The final turning point came when my mom took me to see a guidance advisor, who gave me some relaxation exercises to do so I wouldn’t get so nervous before exams. I remember passing one exam with a B. After class, a teacher came up to me and said, “I want you to know that you’ve really improved over the past few months. Keep up the good work.” He smiled at me, and I was very happy.
It is funny how a few kind words remain in my mind years later. High school was hard, but I had some friends, my sketchbook, and teachers who cared. With these things, I needed nothing else.

If you’ve caught yourself wandering the room whenever you’re on a long phone call, don’t worry — it turns out this strange habit is pretty common and even has some science behind it.
When you chat face-to-face, you’re nodding, gesturing, and reading the other person’s facial expressions. On a phone call, all that visual information disappears. Experts say that wandering in this context is a perfectly normal reaction to the “missing” signals that we usually get in person. “Talking on the phone lacks that certain something called visual feedback,” explains psychologist Ken Fogel. All the extra energy or emotion that you’d normally exchange through eye contact or smiles has nowhere to go, so your body finds an outlet by moving.
Aside from making up for missing visuals, there’s another brainy reason we wander. Ever notice how some people talk with their hands — even on phone calls when no one can see them Our brains and bodies are deeply connected. Research has shown that people gesture during speech because it actually helps them process thoughts and words. Similarly, wandering during a phone chat might help people express their thoughts more fluently. It’s like their feet are helping their brains find the right words.
Another big reason people walk during phone calls is nerves and energy. When you’re on an important call, wandering is actually listed among the most common signs of nervousness. It’s your body’s way of getting rid of extra energy. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In fact, turning nervous energy into movement can help you stay composed when it matters, like on the phone, where your voice is the main signal of your state. It keeps us just busy enough physically to reduce anxiety, which in turn can make us mentally calmer and more present in the conversation.
Knowing all this, you can start to fully embrace your walk-and-talk habit. It’s not a strange habit; it’s practically a simple trick for better conversations. Next time you catch yourself wandering during a call, remember that you’re in good company.
8. According to Ken Fogel, what leads people to wander during phone calls
A.The need to reduce anxiety.
B.The desire to speak fluently.

A disagreement over trivial (琐碎的) matters such as whether water is wet or which way toilet paper should hang can sometimes end friendships that have lasted for years. In fact, the problem is not about the issue itself, but what it represents. A debate over something as unimportant as the direction of a toilet paper roll may turn into a serious conflict (冲突), not because of the object in question, but because it reflects deeper needs: the desire to be heard, understood, and valued by others.
People naturally hope to feel accepted by their friends. When a trivial matter becomes a point of argument, it often feels like a direct attack on one’s intelligence or character. These seemingly small disagreements can uncover deeper issues within the friendship.
Shared values and similar opinions also form an important foundation for friendship. Surprisingly, even a light-hearted dispute (争执) — such as how to pronounce the word “gif” — can lead someone to question how well they truly match with a friend. A simple comment that begins as a joke might later cause doubt about other possible differences between them.
Social media can make such situations worse. Sharing a personal preference — like enjoying pineapple on pizza — can quickly attract strong reactions online. Likes, comments, and arguments turn a private choice into a public debate, increasing pressure on both sides to defend their position, even when the matter is not worth arguing over.
Protecting a meaningful friendship from being harmed by a small conflict requires thoughtful communication. Listening carefully, accepting that people may see things differently, and sometimes choosing not to insist on being right can help maintain trust. It is also wise to decide which issues truly matter — after all, not every disagreement is worth risking a close relationship over.
It may seem surprising that small debates can break strong bonds, but recognizing the real reasons behind these conflicts can help prevent unnecessary damage. Lasting friendships depend less on always agreeing and more on responding to differences with patience and goodwill.
12. What is the real cause of conflicts over small issues
A.Such debates show a lack of shared hobbies.
B.People have a natural desire to win an argument.
C.They are actually of great importance in daily life.
D.They reflect a need to be respected and understood.
13. Which might be a “moment of unease”
A.Profiting from stable investments with spare funds.
B.Trying to find a job overseas when a parent falls ill.
C.Treating difficult problems with one’s first intuition.
D.Continuing to develop in one’s familiar research field.
14. What can make leaders fail according to the author
A.Shifting standards.
B.Lacking experience.
C.Ignoring principles.
D.Overlooking doubts.
15. What is mainly talked about in the last paragraph
A.Intuition types and brain functions.
B.Initial doubts and competing goals.
C.Brain systems and connection forms.
D.Scientific theories and workable tips.
