Jon Pedley is making a big change. He is giving up his life as a businessman for a life of helping others. He is trading his beautiful farmhouse in England for life in a mud hut (小屋) in Uganda, East Africa.
Pedley admitted that he had not always led a very positive life. At times he drank too much and got in trouble with the law. “I had always put the pursuit of money in front of everything else. As long as I was all right, I didn’t care who I was hurting,” says Pedley.
But a visit to Uganda in 2007 gave Pedley a new outlook on life. He was amazed at what he saw and how much the people there appreciated the work he was doing. “I worked there for a few days and these people who have nothing were thanking me by giving me bags of potatoes, which are a fortune for them,” he said. Now Pedley is selling his business, his $1.5 million farmhouse, and his expensive car—and moving into a hut made of mud and boards in a small Ugandan village. There he will help run an organisation that hopes to improve the quality of life for people in the village of Kigazi. He will help to build schoolrooms for children and tanks to hold clean water for villagers. Today, people in Kigazi must walk two miles to a hospital, so Pedley will help to build doctors’ offices, too.
Pedley’s organisation will also work with English teenagers who are in trouble. The teens will be sent to a “camp” in Uganda that Pedley will run. The teens will live in mud huts and help to build water, health, and education facilities for kids in Kigazi, many of whom have lost their parents to poverty or disease. Pedley hopes the teens will see a side of life that might help them turn around their own lives and set them on a new and more positive path.
24.Which of the following best describes Pedley in the past
A.Optimistic. B.Selfless. C.Unsympathetic. D.Independent.
25.What will Pedley do in the small Ugandan village
A.Help build community facilities. B.Do business with the local people.
C.Help farmers increase potato output. D.Introduce tools to improve English teaching.
26.Why will Pedley work with English teenagers in trouble
A.To inspire them to live a more positive life.
B.To encourage them to make friends with locals.
C.To make them learn about different cultures.
D.To train them to become doctors in the future.
27.What is the main idea of the passage
A.Jon Pedley sold his farmhouse and car to start a business in Uganda.
B.The people in Kigazi live a poor life and need clean water and hospitals.
C.Nowadays English teenagers are sent abroad in order to change their lives.
D.A former businessman gave up his comfortable life to help others in Africa.

For more than 200 years ancient buildings have been reconstructed. Reasons for the reconstruction of Roman architecture in particular are many. People like to be surrounded by reconstructions of ancient ruins, where they can learn in an accurate and real manner that is similar to in a museum.
In Reconstructions of Ancient Roman Architecture, Anita Rieche, an archaeologist by profession who has an in-depth understanding of this topic, presents a long series of Roman building reconstructions. In the introduction, she divides these reconstructions into groups and deals with the multiple factors influencing them. This is very helpful to the readers as it enables them to distinguish the 1:1 reconstructed models from the original buildings. The reader will also better understand the intentions behind and problems that happened during the establishment of reconstructed ancient buildings.
In what follows, using selected examples, the author takes us through the broad range of stadiums, temples and mansions that one can visit throughout the world. Rieche confines herself largely to a thorough but impartial (不偏不倚的) analysis of the buildings. However, I would have desired more personal, deeper thoughts of the author on those challenging reconstruction projects. Obviously, a book like this cannot cover all existing reconstructions — the number is countless. Surprisingly the Limes Museum in Aalen fails to appear in the book, except for a small sentence.
Nevertheless, Anita Rieche offers the reader a very informative and useful guide to the facsimiles (复制本) of Roman architecture; it also offers a specified view of what lies under the surfaces of reconstructed buildings. It gives a clear overview of the various forms and functional contexts of reconstruction in archaeology. For travelers who especially enjoy virtual or actual revivals of the past, it’s an enjoyable reading.
28.What can we know about the reconstruction of Roman buildings
A.It applies the latest technology. B.It helps people learn in a real way.
C.It has been conducted for decades. D.It has the same function as museums.
29.How does the book help readers understand reconstructed ancient buildings
A.By ranking them.
B.By introducing their stories.
C.By comparing them with original ones.
D.By grouping them and analyzing influential factors.
30.What does the underlined word “confines” mean in paragraph 3
A.Limits. B.Adapts. C.Commits. D.Exposes.
31.What does the author think of the book
A.Practical and detailed. B.Reasonable and enjoyable.
C.Insightful and thoughtful. D.Forceful and comprehensive.
D
The numerous bacteria that naturally inhabit the human body seem to help us in many ways. One group is emerging as particularly beneficial: a type of gut (肠道) bacteria known as Blautia, which has made headlines recently because it seems to produce some really remarkable effects. Now, a Chinese team is glimpsing another potential benefit of Blautia: helping people adapt to high altitudes. Their findings suggest that providing Blautia could help mountaineers and others perform better in these challenging environments.
Qing-Peng Kong, a geneticist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and his team recruited 45 men to move from their homes at 250 meters above sea level to a town at about 3,700 meters. Despite the thin air, the men ate similar food as they had at home, minimizing the effects of diet changes on their gut bacteria. After 2 days, Blautia went from being rare to very abundant in their guts.
In the second experiment, the team exposed mice to controlled low-oxygen conditions in the lab first and then simulated (模拟) an altitude of 4,000 meters, while giving Blautia to half of them every other day. The Blautia-treated mice showed milder response of altitude sickness. This opens the door into whether altitude sickness might be amenable to treatment through the gut.
The bacteria’s effect may also extend to the brain. “Its superpower comes from the connection between the gut and the brain,” says Klepac-Cerak at Wellesley College. The fatty acids it makes are known to activate receptors (神经末梢) on nerves that connect the digestive system, heart and brain. This could help explain a surprising relationship that Klepac-Cerak reported last year: Kids are more likely to talk and laugh when they have more Blautia in their guts. “There’s lots of communication happening between our brain; we are just beginning to uncover what services bacteria do for us.” Klepac-Cerak notes.
Blautia’s apparent superpowers suggest to Kong it could serve as a supplement (补充) that benefits people regardless of whether they are planning a trip to Tibet. But first, Kong says, he wants to find out whether Blautia is a “solo” player or has these protective effects only as part of a larger group of bacteria.
32.What’s the newly-found benefit of the study led by a Chinese team
A.It gets public attention. B.It helps people do better at high altitudes.
C.It makes social media angry. D.It introduces an advanced new technology.
33.What do we know about the subjects (实验对象) in both experiments
A.They experienced low-oxygen conditions.
B.They received Blautia in their diet.
C.They moved to high-altitude regions.
D.They suffered severe altitude sickness.
34.What does the underlined word “amenable” in Paragraph 3 mean ”.
A.Careless B.Untreatable. C.Unchangeable D.Reactive.
35.How would both Kong and Klepac-Cerak describe Blautia’s role in human health
A.double-edged sword. B.A solo player.
C.An extremely effective solution. D.A partially-understood influence

If you’ve ever been bitten by a mosquito, you know how frustrating their bites can be. 36 , creating an itch (痒) that once you start scratching only seems to get worse. Why does a mosquito bite itch and what can we do
Why does a mosquito bite itch
When a mosquito bites you, it pierces (刺破) the skin using a special mouthpart to suck up blood and injects saliva (唾液) into your skin. Mosquitoes’ saliva has lots of proteins in it, some of which our body recognizes as foreign, and our immune cells spring into action to try to fight them. 37 . It’s actually the body’s response to the foreign mosquito protein it is trying to fight. That’s why some people may only have a mild reaction to bites, while others, more sensitive to the foreign protein, react with large areas of swelling that are more painful.
What helps resist the urge to scratch
“Don’t scratch” is the advice that most experts and health professionals give. As hard and sometimes unrealistic as it can sound, scratching inflames (发炎) the skin, and the inflammation makes the skin itch more. “ 38 ” warned Daniel Markowski, technical adviser for the American Mosquito Control Association, adding that in extreme cases, people can scar themselves.
Instead, there are dozens of creams and sprays that promise itch relief as well as home remedy (疗法). Choosing what’s right for you can often come down to trial and error. In general, all of the various anti-itch creams are very similar. There is no scientific evidence these remedies work, and they can come with their own precautions or side effects. 39

Alan walked home slowly after volleyball practice, his shoulders slumped (耷拉) under the weight of disappointment. The evening sun cast long shadows on the quiet street, but Alan barely noticed. His sports bag felt heavier than usual, each step echoing the coach’s words from earlier that day — the list for the next match was posted, and Alan’s name was missing. A deep sense of loss filled his heart, tightening his chest. He remembered his father, a passionate volleyball player in his youth, who had spent countless evenings in their backyard, patiently practising serves (发球) and spikes (扣球) with him since childhood. The thought of letting his father down was unacceptable, and Alan replayed those memories.
Lost in these sad thoughts, Alan wasn’t watching his path. He rounded a corner and walked straight into someone, stumbling (踉跄) slightly. It was Mia, a friendly girl from his class. Instead of getting angry, Mia simply smiled. “You seem quite worried,” she said. “Sorry,” Alan said in a low voice and began to share his problem. Mia listened carefully. “You hit the ball really hard,” Mia said, “Please watch the game closely. Use your head, not just your body.”
The next afternoon, the school hall was full of the sounds of the big match. Alan sat quietly on the bench, hoping for a chance to play. His team was struggling. When a teammate got injured, the coach called, “Alan, get in and play now!” Finally, the chance came.
Nervously, Alan stepped onto the court. The game was at match point for the other team. Alan felt worried until he thought of Mia’s words: “Watch and think.” He took a deep breath. Then, he watched the server closely. And when the ball was served, Alan was ready. He passed perfectly, and after a good performance, he scored a point: 24:24!

Today, people in Kigazi must walk two miles to a hospital, so Pedley will help to build doctors’ offices, too.(他会帮助为孩子们建造教室,并为村民建造储存清洁水的水箱。如今,基加西的居民必须步行两英里才能到达医院,所以佩德利还将协助建造医生办公室)”及第四段“Pedley’s organisation will also work with English teenagers who are in trouble. The teens will be sent to a ‘camp’ in Uganda that Pedley will run. The teens will live in mud huts and help to build water, health, and education facilities

根据第一段中“People like to be surrounded by reconstructions of ancient ruins, where they can learn in an accurate and real manner that is similar to in a museum.(人们喜欢被古代遗迹的重建所包围,在那里他们可以以一种准确而真实的方式学习,就像在博物馆一样)”可知,关于罗马建筑的重建,我们知道它帮助人们以一种真实的方式学习。故选B项。
根据第二段中“In the introduction, she divides these reconstructions into groups and deals with the multiple factors influencing them.(在介绍中,她将这些重构进行了分组,并讨论了影响重构的多重因素)”可知,这本书通过对它们进行分组并分析影响因素来帮助读者理解重建的古建筑。故选D项。
故选A项。
根据第最后一段中“Nevertheless, Anita Rieche offers the reader a very informative and useful guide to the facsimiles (复制本) of Roman architecture;(尽管如此,Anita Rieche 为读者提供了一份关于罗马建筑复制品的信息丰富且有用的指南。)”以及“For travelers who especially enjoy virtual or actual revivals of the past, it’s an enjoyable reading.(对于那些特别喜欢虚拟或真实重现过去的旅行者来说,这是一本令人愉快的读物)”可推知,作者认为这本书既有深刻的见解又引人深思。故选C项。

Their findings suggest that providing Blautia could help mountaineers and others perform better in these challenging environments.(现在,一个中国团队看到了Blautia的另一个潜在好处:帮助人们适应高海拔地区。
根据第二段的句子“Qing-Peng Kong, a geneticist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and his team recruited 45 men to move from their homes at 250 meters above sea level to a town at about 3,700 meters.(中国科学院遗传学家Qing-Peng Kong和他的团队招募了45名男性,让他们从海拔250米的家中搬到海拔约3700米的城镇)”和第三段的句子“In the second experiment, the team exposed mice to controlled low-oxygen conditions in the lab first and then simulated(模拟) an altitude of 4,000 meters, while giving Blautia to half of them every other day.(在第二个实验中,研究小组首先将小鼠暴露在实验室控制的低氧条件下,然后模拟海拔4000米的环境,同时每隔一天给一半的小鼠喂食Blautia。)” 故选A项。
根据最后一段的句子“But first, Kong says, he wants to find out whether Blautia is a ‘solo’ player or has these protective effects only as part of a larger group of bacteria.(但首先,Kong说他想弄清楚Blautia是否是“独奏者”,还是作为更大细菌群体的一部分才具有这些保护作用)”和第四段的句子“There’s lots of communication happening between our brain; we are just beginning to uncover what services bacteria do for us.(我们的大脑之间有很多交流;我们才刚刚开始发现细菌为我们做了什么。)”
上文“If you’ve ever been bitten by a mosquito, you know how frustrating their bites can be.(如果你曾被蚊子叮咬过,就知道蚊子叮咬有多令人烦躁)”说明蚊子叮咬会带来不适感。空处和前文为顺接关系,承接蚊子叮咬后的症状,引出后续“creating an itch ( 痒) that once you start scratching only seems to get worse. (产生一种瘙痒感,一旦开始抓挠,反而只会痒得更厉害)”越挠越痒的现象。所以E项“小红点会很快变大”符合语境。
37.上文“Mosquitoes’ saliva has lots of proteins in it, some of which our body recognizes as foreign, and our immune cells spring into action to try to fight them.(蚊子的唾液中含有大量的蛋白质,其中一些我们的身体认为是外来的,我们的免疫细胞就会立即行动起来试图对抗它们)”说明蚊子唾液中的蛋白质会让我们身体产生反应。下文“It’s actually the body’s response to the foreign mosquito protein it is trying to fight.(这实际上是身体对它试图对抗的外来蚊子蛋白的反应)”点明发痒的真正原因。
38.上文“As hard and sometimes unrealistic as it can sound, scratching inflames (发炎) the skin, and the inflammation makes the skin itch more.(尽管这听起来很难,有时也不现实,但抓挠会使皮肤发炎,而炎症会使皮肤更痒)”说明抓挠会使皮肤更痒,空处递进补充抓挠的负面影响。
39.上文“There is no scientific evidence these remedies work, and they can come with their own precautions or side effects.(没有科学证据表明这些补救措施有效,它们可能会有自己的预防措施或副作用)”说明外用止痒产品存在弊端。
40.根据下文“Some people can have serious allergic reactions to mosquitoes, although in practice it is rare, Vosshall said. If you experience severe symptoms such as breathing trouble, you should seek for medical attention immediately.(沃索尔说,有些人可能对蚊子有严重的过敏反应,尽管实际上这种情况很少见。

He focused, watching every move of the opposing team nervously. The next serve came, fast and low, but Alan kept calm. He remembered Mia’s words, eyes fixed on the ball, and jumped at the right moment to block it. The ball bounced back, and his teammates seized the chance to spike. Cheers erupted from the crowd as they scored again, taking the lead 25:24. The opposing team fought back fiercely, but Alan stayed focused, passing accurately and defending firmly. When the final ball was served, he leaped high, spiking it hard to the ground. The whistle blew — his team won!
After celebrating, his father and Mia came over. His father patted him warmly on the shoulder, eyes shining with pride. “I’m so proud of you, son,” he said. “You didn’t just play with strength, but with your head.” Mia smiled and waved, “See You’re amazing when you watch and think.” Alan felt a rush of joy and relief, the sense of loss gone. He realized that failure wasn’t the end, but a chance to grow. From that day on, he practiced harder, knowing that success comes from both effort and wisdom.
