You can borrow laptops from the lockers on the ground floor to use in the library and book group study rooms up to 2 weeks in advance, where you can work in groups and practice presentations. You can also bring in your own laptop or mobile devices and connect to the fast and secure University wireless network.
You can borrow and return books and other materials using the self-service devices. If you need any help, please ask a friendly member of staff.

While undergoing treatment for breast cancer, I returned to work — probably a little too soon. It was a difficult and emotionally draining time with my health issues. It’s all the stuff that makes our lives “full”.
One day, after a stress-filled phone conversation, I hung up the phone, put my head down on my desk, and let out a huge, weepy sigh. My co-worker, Joyce, stepped away from her work and rolled her chair next to mine.
“What’s going on ” she asked.
“What isn’t going on ” I complained. “Pick a subject: sick mom, out-of-control adult child, sick dog, daily treatments, and my car that needs work. Everything is dreadful! I’m so tired. I feel like all this will never end!”
I grabbed a bunch of tissues and tried to compose myself. Joyce gave me a moment to calm down. She then told me a little about a time when she also had a tough time with a lot of things going on. She felt totally overwhelmed, like there was no end to the stress.
I asked her how she had managed. She winked and held out an open hand and a closed fist. Her response gave me words to live by in stressful times.

I got the message. Those wise words have become a golden rule for me, and I am forever grateful. When I feel like life stuff just keeps piling on — whether it’s good, bad or just feels like too much to handle — I recite those perspective-changing words.

Plastic pollution has reached crisis levels across the globe. Each year, more than 8 million tons of plastic waste flow into the world’s oceans, harming marine life, polluting water supplies, and entering the food chain. Sea creatures often mistake plastic bags and bottles for food, leading to injury or death. Microplastics — tiny fragments less than five millimeters long — have been found in everything from seafood to drinking water, raising concerns about potential health risks to humans.
Governments and environmental groups are taking action to fight plastic pollution. Many countries have introduced bans on single-use plastics like straws, cups, and cutlery. Some businesses are switching to eco-friendly packaging made from paper, cardboard, or plant-based materials. In addition, cleanup campaigns are removing tons of plastic from beaches and oceans every year.
However, solving the problem requires more than just bans and cleanups. Experts emphasize the need for a circular economy — one where plastic products are designed to be reused, repaired, or recycled instead of being thrown away after a single use. This means changing how products are made and encouraging consumers to adopt more sustainable habits.
Individual action also plays a vital role. Simple choices like using reusable water bottles, bringing cloth bags to the store, and properly sorting waste can make a significant difference. As more people become aware of the issue and take steps to reduce their plastic use, there is hope for a cleaner, healthier planet.

How do you study unexplored areas of the ocean and identify critical habitat for an endangered species You include the animal for study in the scientific process. Australian scientists have formulated a clever solution to study hard-to-reach areas of the seafloor: they attached (把……固定在) cameras to sea lions. The resulting videos have given scientists new information about the endangered sea lions, and also about the seafloor.
Australian sea lions are endangered and have seen population declines of over sixty percent in the last forty years. Researchers from the University of Adelaide fitted endangered Australian sea lions with cameras and tracking devices (跟踪仪器) to better understand where they spent their time and how they used different areas of the seafloor to gather food.
The sea lions could cover large areas of the ocean floor quickly, and dive deeply to places humans can’t reach. The researchers used eight healthy females from two different groups of sea lions. They chose females because they would soon return to land to feed their young pups. That meant the scientists could easily get the cameras back.
The eight sea lions traveled about 560 kilometers underwater, diving as deep as 110 meters below the surface. In all, the animals collected 89 hours of videos, letting the researchers see exactly what the animals saw.
After reviewing the videos, researchers were surprised to learn the sea lions hunt for food in six distinct seafloor habitats and different sea lions like different kinds of food. The videos gave the team a good idea of the kinds of plants and animals living in each of those environments.
Using AI and the information from the videos, the researchers came up with a tool that can predict (预测) what the seafloor is like. If the AI tool is given the sea’s temperature at the surface, and how far the location is from land, it can guess what the ocean floor will be like. And it’s correct 98% of the time.
