My wife and I wanted to share our new home with family and friends by hosting a small gathering in the early summer. She had prepared lots of snacks, while my job was to have the backyard in order.
There was plenty of space for the kids to run and play. There was just one thing I hadn't counted on: My brother chose to bring his dog Toby, a 50-pound ball of fire. Though friendly, he could easily knock over my niece's small boys and my six-month-old granddaughter. So, when my brother showed up, I asked him to watch Toby and keep him outside.
My plan was working out just fine. Toby was using up his energy by running back and forth in the backyard and giving the kids plenty of room. Unexpectedly, after supper, the weather changed. It started to rain and everyone went indoors.
It was an awkward moment. I didn't want Toby to be running around in the house, and my brother wasn't happy with driving home with a wet dog. Eventually, my brother decided to leave rather than force the issue.
A few days passed, and I hadn't heard anything from my brother. I texted him and expressed wishes for him to come out again. His reply came as a surprise—a shock, actually: “Not a chance.” Clearly, he was unhappy over the way we had parted. After all, I had left him little choice. Well, he'll get over it, I reasoned.
Two months passed. My wife suggested I get in touch with my brother, but I resisted, thinking he should call first. However, my conscience(良心) kept bothering me. I tried to put myself in my brother's shoes. He was facing health issues and his wife of thirty-five years had passed away a few months earlier. Toby was his constant companion, the one who kept him going.

Paragraph 2:With the biscuits my wife had made, I arrived at my brother's door. ________________________________________________________________________

I realized it was me who was at fault. The more I thought about my brother's situation, the heavier my heart felt. My brother, whose dog was his constant companion, must have felt deeply hurt by my thoughtless decision. After understanding all of this, I decided to take immediate action to mend our relationship. I shared my idea with my wife, and she agreed that I should have done this earlier. She also offered to help me make some biscuits my brother loved, hoping they would convey my sincere apology.
With the biscuits my wife had made, I arrived at my brother's door. As I knocked on the door, my heart was beating faster and faster, and I kept rubbing my hands nervously. When he opened the door, his expression was cold, which made me feel even more guilty. I stepped forward, holding out the gifts, and said firmly, “I was wrong. I didn't consider how important your dog is to you. Please forgive me.” He stared at me in silence for a long moment, and then his shoulders relaxed. “Come in,” he murmured. As we sat down and shared the biscuits, I realized that understanding could break down the barriers and that our relationship would become stronger than ever.
在哪里(where)? Toby

When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest, I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail His reply: “Because I love your stories. If you're willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere's horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith(银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse's mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny, and unlikely to be anyone else's choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night Did he get tired Have doubts Did he want to quit I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere's horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half-dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud and said, “Great. Now, write it again.” I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn't win, I wouldn't care.

A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I was informed that I won first prize in the writing contest and that there would be an award presentation in two days. I was so happy to hear the news that I immediately shared it with my teacher. “I knew you'd win! I am proud of you. You made it!” he said excitedly. Then came the big day. When I was invited to the stage to receive the award, I expressed my thanks to my teacher. I said, “It's you who make me fall in love with writing, my social studies teacher. Without your recognition and guidance, I couldn't have written this article. Again thank you very much!”
I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation. My teacher was waiting for me. Holding my hands, he said, “Congratulations! You are a good writer, so keep writing.” “You know I didn't like writing before, but now I am crazy about it! I will try my best to create good works,” I said seriously. Since then, I have written many good works and now I am a famous writer. I owe my success to my social studies teacher who is a beacon in my life on the road to writing.

I met Gunter on a cold, wet and unforgettable evening in September. I had planned to fly to Vienna and take a bus to Prague for a conference. Due to a big storm, my flight had been delayed by an hour and a half. I touched down in Vienna just 30 minutes before the departure of the last bus to Prague. The moment I got off the plane, I ran like crazy through the airport building and jumped into the first taxi on the rank without a second thought.
That was when I met Gunter. I told him where I was going, but he said he hadn't heard of the bus station. I thought my pronunciation was the problem, so I explained again more slowly, but he still looked confused. When I was about to give up, Gunter fished out his little phone and rang up a friend. After a heated discussion that lasted for what seemed like a century, Gunter put his phone down and started the car.
Finally, with just two minutes to spare we rolled into the bus station. Thankfully, there was a long queue(队列) still waiting to board the bus. Gunter parked the taxi behind the bus, turned around, and looked at me with a big smile on his face. “We made it,” he said.
Just then I realized that I had zero cash in my wallet. I flashed him an apologetic smile as I pulled out my Portuguese bankcard. He tried it several times, but the card machine just did not play along. A feeling of helplessness washed over me as I saw the bus queue thinning out.
At this moment, Gunter pointed towards the waiting hall of the bus station. There, at the entrance, was a cash machine. I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the machine, and popped my card in,only to read the message: “Out of order. Sorry.”

I ran back to Gunter and told him the bad news. “Sorry, I can't take cash out,” I said embarrassedly, with my face burning. Hearing my words, Gunter replied with the familiar smile on his face, “That's OK, just go ahead, you can pay me at your convenience.” So surprised and moved was I that I couldn't say a word out. As the bus queue became shorter, Gunter pointed toward it and said to me, “It is your turn.” Realizing it was time to leave, I took out my notebook, asked Gunter's number and wrote it down hurriedly. At the same time, I promised firmly that I would call him and paid him back as soon as possible.
Four days later, when I was back in Vienna, I called Gunter as promised. The moment Gunter picked up the phone, I couldn't wait to introduce myself. Gunter seemed to know I was going to call, and he said softly, “I know.” We made an appointment to meet at the departure place. As we met the following day, I hugged him tightly like we were long-time-no-see old friends, and expressed my great gratitude. I paid him back and offered an extra $10 tip. However, he refused the tip, only to accept the taxi fare, saying “It is not a big deal.” Suddenly, a warm current washed over me. It was then that I realized that a small act of kindness could make such a big difference.

在哪里(where)? Gunter

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad's friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze(吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.

Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. Dad and I found it was so cute that we decided to chase it. After a while, we were completely lost in the forest. There was nothing in sight but trees. “We might not make it back in time for supper,” I thought to myself. I kept shouting for help, hoping someone might hear me, but there was no reply. My dad also called out and even used a small flashlight to signal through the trees, yet still no one responded. After a series of fruitless attempts to find our way out, we felt hungry and tired.
We had no idea where we were and it was getting dark. We were stuck in the forest. To make things worse, an unexpected shower washed away all the tracks we had left, making it even harder to find our way back. I was on the verge of breaking down when my father patted me on the shoulder and said calmly, “Don't worry, son. I remember there is a river near the farm house. If we find the river, we can get back home.” After what seemed like hours, I suddenly cried out excitedly, “Listen, Dad—running water! We can walk along the river and return to the farm house.” When we caught sight of lights in the distance, we knew we were safe. As we got closer, we saw Uncle Paul waving a flashlight toward us. What a night!

I was lacking in everything needed to start a new friendship.
My parents moved to the town when they decided to look for new jobs but they didn't realize I was really hurt when I said goodbye to my old friends. It felt awful to be a new student in the school and when my classmates were chatting, what I could do was to be caught up in my thoughts watching the clouds outside the window. I was not good at maths or history; nor was I good at drawing or dancing. I was shy and timid. I had a few friends back in my hometown and it seemed that they were the only ones who I could be friends with for my whole life. I felt I had achieved a point of saturation with regard to having friends and I could make no further addition to my friend list. I was ashamed of myself, so I believed I deserved no notice from others until Emily came to my world.
Emily was fearless, outspoken and easy to go. She was everything I was not and I was too shy to come out of my shell. I met Emily in school almost every day and yet I never talked to her. We were in the same class but we were like poles apart. How I wished I could be like her or at least be a friend of hers!
It was another ordinary day.
I wandered to the bus stop in the morning and waited for the school bus. Birds were singing songs with their friends but who could I sing songs with I got on the bus and went straight to my usual seat, complaining in a low voice about getting up early and going to school like every other day, and about how things were going to be the same all over again. Little did I realize something different would happen that day.

When I got up to get off the bus, my schoolbag was stuck in the armrest. I pulled it as hard as I could, but it still wouldn't move. In a rush of panic, I knocked over the water bottle inside, making water spill all over the floor. Overcome by embarrassment, my face turned red. Just then, a gentle voice broke the silence: “Let me help you.” Looking up, I saw Emily. With careful attention, she freed my schoolbag and picked up the wet books. “Thank you,” I said softly, too nervous to look at her, and quickly got off the bus.
I got noticed by Emily, who brought me the courage to start a new friendship. The next day, a note was waiting for me in my locker—an invitation from Emily to have lunch with her. Hesitantly, I agreed. To my surprise, she asked about my hobbies and listened very carefully. Gradually, I started to show my true self. We talked about books, movies, and even my hometown. I realized that making friends wasn't as scary as I had thought. Emily's kindness helped me get out of my shyness, and soon, I had a friend who saw and valued my good merits. More importantly, this experience taught me that I don't need to wait others to take the initiative, just like what Emily did and that I could pay it forward. Chances are that reaching out to those in trouble might also bring me genuine friendship.

One fall, my wife Elli and I had a single goal: to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a research camp outside “the polar bear capital of the world”—the town of Churchill in Manitoba, Canada.
Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears—like all wild animals—should be photographed from a safe distance. When I'm face to face with a polar bear, I like it to be through a camera with a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those times.
As Elli and I cooked dinner, a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and smelled our garlic bread.
The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.
Terrified, Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air. Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this polar bear though—he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws(爪子).
I radioed the camp manager for help. He told me a helicopter was on its way, but it would be 30 minutes before it arrived. Making the best of this close encounter(相遇), I took some pictures of the bear.
Elli and I feared the fence wouldn't last through 30 more minutes of the bear's punishment. The camp manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears' eyes, but doesn't hurt them. So I approached our uninvited guest slowly and, through the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar(吼叫), the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.

A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp. Its fur still wet from the lake, it smelled the air carefully, and then rushed at the fence with renewed anger. The wood posts made a creaking sound as it hit them, and we stepped back, hearts beating fast. “We need to hold on for a bit longer,” Elli said in a shaking voice. I lifted the pepper spray, ready to defend again, but the bear suddenly stopped, tilting its head as if puzzled. Then it let out a low growl and started circling the camp, its huge paws leaving deep marks in the soil.
At that very moment, the helicopter arrived. The loud noise of its blades broke the tension, and the bear ran away into the far distance. We waved wildly, and the pilot landed nearby. “Are you two all right?” he shouted over the noise. We nodded, still out of breath. As we got on board, I looked back at the camp—now quiet except for the fading echo of the bear's roar. This experience made us realize that even in the most terrifying moments, bravery and quick thinking can turn danger into a memorable tale. Moreover, every time we look at the photos from that day, we are reminded that in nature, fear and awe are closely connected, and it's this balance that makes exploring the wild both challenging and wonderful.

1. (家庭亲情) “Once there was a ship travelling on the tough sea and on the ship there was a pair of couple. All of a sudden, the ship met with an accident and the couple had no choice but to run to the lifeboat without delay. After reaching there, they realized that there was space only for one person. At that very moment, the husband pushed his wife behind him and jumped onto the lifeboat himself, leaving his wife standing on the sinking ship, shouting something desperately to her husband with her eyes filled with tears.”
The teacher stopped her storytelling and asked her students, “Guys, guess what it was that she shouted.”
Most students answered, “I hate you!”
After listening to all this reply, the teacher glanced through the whole class again and noticed that there was a boy sitting silently throughout. Then she asked him the same question.
The boy answered, “I believe she would have shouted—Take care of our child.”
Listening to his remarks, the teacher was surprised and asked the boy doubtfully, “Have you heard of this story before?”
Shaking his head, the boy said softly and sadly, “No, I haven't. But that's what my mother said to my father before she died of a deadly disease.”
Moved and feeling sad, the teacher replied, “Your answer is absolutely right!”
Then she continued, “Let's take up the story. The ship sank eventually and the husband went home and brought up their daughter alone. Many years later after the death of the man, their daughter was tidying up all his belongings when she found his diary. In his diary she found that when her parents were on the ship, her mother had already been diagnosed(诊断) with advanced illness and at the critical moment, the father rushed to the only chance of survival.”
Paragraph 1:
In his diary, the man mentioned he wished to sink to the ocean with his wife but for their daughter he had to live. _________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Without him, their baby daughter would become an orphan. After drowning himself in sorrow for a short time, he encouraged himself and learned how to raise baby. Whenever faced with hardships, he would inspire himself with his wife's words—“Take care of our child.” Seeing the little girl grow into a sunny, pretty girl with double love from both parents, the man knew he made it to keep his promise.
Paragraph 2:
The story was finished and the class was silent. ______________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Nobody talked or laughed as usual. Instead, it seemed that every student was lost in deep thought, tasting the moving life story. The teacher was sure that the students were reflecting on their replies and that they had understood the moral of the story. Of the Good and Evil in this world, there are hidden secrets behind them. So we should not really focus on the surface and judge anyone without understanding them first. Put yourself in others' shoes and then you can really understand their behaviour.
2. (个人成长)Mike licked(舔) the last of the chocolate ice cream. It was almost time to leave. He jumped into the car with his parents and headed off to the Olympic-sized pool for the big swim meet. When his race came up, Mike was confident. He was strong and swift. Mike climbed out of the pool, smiling. He had just won first place.
A week later, it was time for another swim meet. Like before, Mike decided to enjoy his favourite flavoured ice cream before they left home. As Mike climbed out of the pool, his teammates patted him on the back. He'd taken first place again in his race.
As it turned out, Mike decided to have some chocolate ice cream before every one of the next few swim meets that came up. He began to think of it as his lucky charm. After several months of being placed in the top positions of every race he swam, Mike was feeling himself unbeatable. And he wouldn't admit it, but he was also starting to feel a little uncomfortable. All that ice cream was adding a few pounds to his athletic swimmer's build.
It didn't take long after that for Mike to start coming in second place—and then third and then last place in his races. The lucky chocolate ice cream had lost its magic. On the day of his next swim meet, his mother sat down at the table with him. “Mike, I think we need to talk about this. We all love ice cream, but it's got lots of fat and sugar in it, and it's not healthy for your body to eat so much of it.” Mike unwillingly agreed. His father offered to go running with him few days a week to help strengthen his muscles. The extra weight soon disappeared, and Mike found himself breathing easier at swim.
It was the last meet of the season, and Mike wasn't sure what to expect. He felt healthy again, but he didn't know if he still had any speed in the pool.
Paragraph 1:

Whenever he came up for a breath, he could see he was gaining on the boy ahead of him in the next lane. Feeling determined to overtake him, Mike found the power in his muscles he needed to swim ahead, and as his hand touched the edge of the pool, the race was over. He lifted his swim glasses off his head and looked at the electronic board. He knew he wasn't the last, but what was his time?
Paragraph 2:

Mike had won his race, and he had also been qualified for the national championships. The audience and his teammates cheered loudly, and his parents were grinning from ear to ear. “Hey son, let's go and have some of your favourite ice cream and celebrate!” said his father. “Thanks, Dad, but I'll pass on the ice cream; it's not such a lucky charm after all!”
On an ordinary Thursday afternoon, I turned up the next walkway. Children played in the yards along the block. I waved to them as I walked by, delivering mail at houses along the way.
Some mailmen preferred routes where they drove a truck and slipped the mail into a collection of mailboxes without seeing anyone face to face. Not me. I wanted to be outside talking to people. That's where the excitement was. The lady who lived there opened the door wide. “Hello,” she said. I knew what she was waiting for. “I've got your book club selection,” I said, handing over her package.
There were only about 700 people on my route. Over the years I'd gotten to know most of them, if not in person then by their mail. There were the folks who got magazines, or book after book, those who loved their catalogues, and some who had steady pen pals. I knew I provided an important service in my job. College acceptances, birthday presents, postcards from all corners of the world—they could all make someone's day. I also brought doctor bills and insurance notices.
Mrs Dorman at the end of my route got a package from the Home Shopping Network almost every day. She was an older lady, who'd turned 78, and I liked being able to bring a little joy into her life with my delivery. She got her blood pressure pills and blood test kits for diabetes(糖尿病) in the Yesmail. Yes, convenient. But I was just the messenger, showing up every day like clockwork. It wasn't me who was making a difference in people's lives. Not me personally. A friendly hello, a chat with a lonely person. That was the most I could offer.
I dug in my bag for Mrs Dorman's mail—and the inevitable Home Shopping Network package. She'd be glad to get this, whatever it was. Mrs Dorman often waited for me at the door and we always had a nice talk, but not today.

I knocked at the door, but no one answered. A little worried, I pushed it open, stepped into the house and found Mrs Dorman lying face down in the hallway. Arriving fast, they lifted Mrs Dorman onto a stretcher and carried her to the ambulance.

I was sure happy the day she greeted me at the door herself again. We greeted each other as usual. “I was watching TV on Thursday morning and lost my balance getting up,” she explained. “All that time I was praying. Praying for you. I knew you'd come just as you do every day. That's what gave me comfort.” I realized I could make some difference to their life. It was just an ordinary Thursday. And that was extraordinary.
4.(探险救援)Ten-year-old Sami loved to visit his grandfather's house. The house was near the beautiful blue sea. At the seaside stood thick and tall palm trees with green coconuts hanging from them. When the coconuts fell down, Sami would break them open and drink the coconut water. Sami liked to play under the trees. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa's place.
This winter vacation, Sami was surprised when he came to his grandfather's village. There were hardly any trees left. He saw houses built near the sea. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left.
Grandpa's house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut down. He hugged each palm tree in his courtyard. He also named the two big trees near the front door—one was Petu, and the other Betu. He had planted them with his own hands and today they had become large, massive trees with thick trunks. They were tall and green and gave the sweetest, juiciest coconuts.
One night, Sami was awakened by a strange sound. He could not sleep. He tossed(辗转反侧) and turned in bed.
Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting. He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa. He clung(附着) to his grandpa tightly. Grandpa cried out, “It's an earthquake! It's an earthquake!” They ran outside the house. They thought that would be safe.
Suddenly, there was a loud sound; the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring. People were shouting, screaming and crying, “The sea is rising! The sea is rising.” The villagers started running away from the beach.
Sami watched, dumbstruck(惊呆的).
The waves were rising higher and higher. Sami thought, “How big the waves are!” He went into the house again and saw water coming in from all sides. He was scared.
Sami remembered his mother telling him long ago, “You must always get out of the house if the floods come too near.” He ran outside the house with Grandpa. But the water came surging(汹涌) in.
Waves about twelve metres high came rushing in, drowning everything. Water was all around and everywhere.
Paragraph 1:
Grandpa held Sami's hand tightly but a huge wave separated them. _______________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Grandpa fought the waves and strived to catch Sami, but failed. Sami was drifting away! He struggled to keep his head above the water. The water pushed him ahead. Fortunately, he caught a palm tree in his courtyard. He panicked and screamed out at Sami but could not see him. He clung to tree tightly while the sea was all around. In the hope of seeing Sami, Grandpa climbed higher up the tree. The water carried Sami round and round.
Paragraph 2:
“Sami, Sami!” Grandpa cried. “Don't be scared, little one, come to me, quickly.” ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
“But Grandpa, I can't swim!” Another wave came with terrifying speed and force. Sami cried in despair. Suddenly, Sami felt himself thrown onto the top of a tree. He immediately held it! Looking around, he saw everything was terribly destroyed, but in the near distance, his grandpa was on another tree! Soon it was calm; both Grandpa and Sami came down the trees and rushed to hug each other, and then they hugged the trees with tears of gratitude.
Old Man Donovan was a mean man who hated children. He threw rocks at them and even shot at them with a shotgun. At least that's what we had heard.
His small farm bordered our neighbourhood where my younger sister, Leigh Ann, and I lived when we were growing up. His farm was long, narrow, and quaint. It held two treasures. One was his beautiful fruit.
There were many varieties of fruits: pears, apples, and lots more I just can't think of. The fruits naturally drew the children to his land. It made them into thieves. But my sister and I didn't dare to take his fruit because of the horrible rumours we had heard about Old Man Donovan.
One summer day, we were playing in a nearby field. It was time to head back home. My sister and I were feeling very daring that day. There was a short cut to our house that went through the farm. We thought he wouldn't be able to see us run across his property around the luscious(可口的) fruit trees. We were almost through the farm when we heard, “Hey, girls!” in a gruff(低沉), low voice. We stopped dead in our tracks! There we were face-to-face with Old Man Donovan. Our knees were shaking. We had visions of rocks pounding our bodies and bullets piercing our hearts.
“Come here,” he said, reaching up to one of his apple trees. Still shaking, we went over to him. He held out several ripe, juicy, red apples. “Take these home,” he commanded. We took the apples with surprised hearts and ran all the way home. Of course, Leigh Ann and I ate the apples.
As time went on, we often went through Old Man Donovan's farm, and he kept on giving us more luscious fruits. One day, we stopped by to see him when he was on his front porch(门廊). We talked to him for hours. While he was talking, we realized that we had found the other hidden treasure: the sweet, kind heart hidden behind his gruff voice. Soon, he was one of our favourite people to talk to.
Paragraph 1:
Every summer, we would visit Mr Donovan and talk to him. ____________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
We shared with him our colourful experience at school while he kept giving out his luscious fruits as usual. As time went by, we seemed to be more a family than good friends. But one summer, we were informed that he was seriously ill so we were anxious and felt like sitting on pins and needles. We rushed straight to the hospital to see him. Weak as he was, he comforted us.
Paragraph 2:
The next winter, word got around that Old Man Donovan had died. ______________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hearing the bad news, I felt a lump in my throat, tears welling up in my eyes. The wind whistled through the trees as if mourning for the death of Donovan. I realized gone were the days when we sat together chatting with each other. However, he left us a hidden treasure—his kind heart, which shall never die away.
6. (人与动物)I sat at the breakfast table with my four-year-old son, Matthew, trying to ignore the ache in my stomach. “Mama, want to play?” “Not today, baby,” I shook my head. These days I could barely get out of bed. I was still recovering from surgery. I hoped for strength and happiness. But the future seemed so hopeless.
Suddenly, Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. “Bird!” he shouted, rushing to our courtyard. Sure enough, there was a white dove seated in a rubber tree. It sat there for a few moments, and then flew away. Strange, I'd never seen one in our neighbourhood before.
When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time with a mate carrying twigs. “Look, Matthew,” I said, pointing to the tree. “They're going to make a nest.” The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on top of the rubber tree.
Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he'd run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door, talking to the birds while they worked. His enthusiasm was influential. As much as I was grieving, I couldn't help but look forward to the doves' visits too.
Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree's broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew, throwing the doves' nest to the ground. I heard the twigs break apart.
I surveyed the damage. Nothing good ever lasted. I wouldn't blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pile of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from scratch. Again, though, the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they renewed their efforts, as if nothing had happened.
Paragraph 1:
I knew I had to do something. ____________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The white dove and its mate had given me something to look forward to, even in my darkest days. Now I was going to help them in return. I woke up the following morning with a plan. There was only an hour before the doves usually made their visits. I hammered a shelf into the wall next to the rubber tree and covered it with leaves to make it look like a tree. Then Matthew and I stood by the sliding glass door, waiting and hoping.
Paragraph 2:
“It works! The birds are back!” Matthew announced. ______________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
There they were—sitting on top of the shelf, adding some twigs to the new nest despite damage from the strong wind. Three weeks later, we watched three chicks break free from their shells. “Chirp, chirp!” Matthew sang. I held him close and kissed him, feeling more positive and hopeful than I had in months. I realized all around me, life went on. And it was filled with wonders and surprises that I couldn't even imagine.
