Saying that those two weeks were an unexpected journey is no exaggeration (夸张). When I applied for a spot on an exchange program in Chengdu, I never thought I’d actually be selected. Before going to China, my experience of Chinese cuisine was limited to lemon chicken, pot noodles, and fried rice. So, in preparation for my trip to China, I was mentally preparing myself for the worst.
Eating turned out to be a pleasant surprise. When visiting Dujiangyan, three Chinese students took me to a restaurant. I spent about ten minutes using Google Translate to decide what to eat. After deciding what I wanted, I asked for their help with my order. They laughed and said they’d already ordered for the whole table. Sharing is a big part of how food is consumed there. You don’t order for yourself; you all order as a group. Every meal feels like a family dinner. It’s a very warm experience that we all greatly appreciated.
Getting along with others was one of the worrisome thoughts before my arrival although I was repeatedly told by my friends and family that I would make friends for life. It turned out that my doubt was severely misplaced. On the first day of classes, we all got to meet our Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) students who were there to help and guide us, and they all ended up meaning so much more to us. For two weeks, we honestly felt like a big family.
Finally, I wanted to give some advice to any students considering this program. Try to get a SIM card so you are able to access mobile Internet. Learn the basics of the language. You’ll also probably find that you’ll pick up other words along the way. If you are part of the SWUFE program, bring lots of gifts. I didn’t think I would get as close to so many students as I did, so I didn’t pack enough gifts. Travelling can be a little scary but if you just stay calm, you will find that it’s really an enjoyable experience.

Soda, extremely sweet and nutritionally empty, is subject to taxation (征税) in an increasing number of regions. Nowadays, more than 35 countries and 7 cities in the United States have carried out a tax on soda and other sugar-sweetened drinks, a policy driven by mounting public health anxieties over diet-related diseases.
In the United States, nearly 40 percent of adults are obese (肥胖的), which adds $147 billion to the nation’s yearly healthcare spending, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The problem is complex, but the widespread intake of foods packed with added sugar that adds calories while providing no essential nutrients plays a major role, with drinks accounting for nearly half the added sugar in the American diet.
Public health researchers regard soda tax as a low-hanging fruit in the battle against health problems such as obesity. These researchers argue that unlike other public health policies that require long-term education and gradual behavior change, soda tax can directly influence people’s spending decisions by increasing the cost of unhealthy drinks.
Behavioral scientist Christina Roberto from UPenn notes taxes are among the most effective policies to change unhealthy eating habits as such taxation has long been proven to have cut public health risks from alcohol and tobacco use. Yet soda tax may fall short of advocates’ goals. Current tax rates are often too insignificant to reach the price level needed to change purchasing behavior. Consumers may replace sugary drinks with other calorie-rich but nutrient-poor foods, or simply cross city borders to buy untaxed soda in neighboring areas.
While drink tax can cut down on sugary drink consumption, health gains won’t come easy and will take time. Drawing on the experience of tobacco and alcohol taxes — once faced with opposition from the industries — experts suggest that soda tax should be paired with cultural changes, like how anti-smoking laws eventually decreased tobacco intake. Only by combining policies with growing public understanding can we make soda tax truly effective.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming common, but charging them still takes time. While some new EVs can recharge in about 20 minutes, many need much longer. However, this may soon change.
At an event in Paris on April 8th, BYD, the world’s largest EV maker, showed a new ultra-fast charging system. It uses a 1,500 kW charger that looks like a large overhead frame. When connected to BYD’s new car model, its 122 kW·h battery can go from 10% to 70% charge in just five minutes. A full charge takes only nine minutes.
How does fast charging work A charger changes alternating current (AC) from the power grid (电力网) into direct current (DC) that batteries use. Slow overnight charging uses the charger inside the car. But fast charging uses a much more powerful external charger, sending more energy into the battery quickly.
There is a limit, though. In lithium-ion (锂离子) batteries, charged particles called lithium ions move from the cathode to the anode (负极) during charging. If the charge rate is too high, traffic jams of ions can form, creating resistance and harmful heat. BYD says its “Blade Battery” solves this by redesigning electrodes at the molecular (分子) level, using thin parts to reduce internal resistance. The company plans to install 20, 000 of its powerful chargers in China by the end of this year.
Another company, Nyobolt from Britain, takes a different approach. Its 35 kW·h battery can charge from 10% to 80% in under five minutes using an existing 350 kW fast charger. It uses special anodes made of a niobium-tungsten oxide, allowing ions to move faster. Nyobolt’s batteries are already used in data centers and warehouse robots.
Fast charging can cause batteries to lose capacity more quickly, but engineers are solving this. Nyobolt says its batteries have been tested with over 4, 000 fast charges while keeping more than 80% of their capacity. BYD also promises improved durability. Soon, the long wait at charging stations may become a thing of the past.
