Anyone studying modern Chinese art will unavoidably meet the monumental figure Qi Baishi (1864-ing from a poor peasant family, Qi began learning art relatively late. Yet through consistent determination, he progressed from a village carpenter and folk artist to one of the most celebrated painters in Chinese history.
Instead of simply copying classical masters, he absorbed impressions from mountains and rivers and painted them from memory. The resulting album, Borrowing Scenes, reflects a striking admission: He could only borrow beauty from nature rather than possess it. This humbleness became central to his artistic philosophy.
Qi’s approach was deeply shaped by his early training as a woodcarver and seal carver. He learned to “do subtraction” — removing unnecessary elements and keeping only what impressed him most. On paper, every fish seems to carry a sword (剑) on its back. This extraordinary vitality brings each creature to life with just a few brushstrokes.
From 1919 to 1928, Qi underwent a major transformation, known as the “old-age change”. He developed a bold new style that mixed literati elegance with the direct appeal of folk art — using bright red flowers against heavy black ink. The result was fresh, powerful, and deeply original.
His success lies not only in his talents but also in energetic practice. Admirers have compared him to Picasso. However, Picasso once said he learned from Qi rather than teaching him. Qi’s influence reached the West when his work was exhibited at San Francisco’s de Young Museum in 1960 — the first solo (单独的) exhibition by a Chinese artist in the US.

A new island to support wildlife is being created in the UK. The National Trust, a conservation organization, recently sank three large boats into the Blackwater Estuary (河口) in Essex, England, to form the base of the island. Birds can rest there, and the structure will protect the area’s salt marsh (盐沼) habitats, where many plant and animal species live.
An estuary is where a river widens and flows into the sea. The Blackwater Estuary is home to some of the UK’s most threatened seabirds. Experts hope the artificial island will be a safe place for these birds.
To make the artificial island, the team cut holes in the bottom of the boats and poured mud into them to weigh them down. It took about 282,000 cubic feet of mud to fill and surround the boats — enough to fill more than three Olympic swimming pools. More mud will be piled on top, and then a layer of gravel (砾石) will be added. Once the work is complete, the island will be slightly larger than a football field. It will be a place for the birds to rest, even when the tide is at its highest and nearby shores are largely underwater.
Along with creating a new home for birds, the team hopes the island will slow the erosion of the salt marsh inside the estuary. Erosion can happen when flooding and waves pull soil and rocks into the sea. The new island should act as a defense, sheltering the salt marsh from waves to protect the habitat.
Katy Gilchrist, coastal project manager for the National Trust, said the program was a form of “marine recycling” because it transformed retired boats into a reserve for wildlife. “We’re basically turning history into habitat,” she added. “And as far as we know, no one has attempted anything quite like this before.”

Soon, people with visual impairments might read regular books using a new audio device. Developed by MIT, this finger-worn device aims to give them affordable, immediate access to printed text.
The FingerReader, a 3D printed trial model, fits like a ring. It is equipped with a small camera that scans text. Software tracks finger movements, identifies words, and processes the information. A machine voice reads aloud. It quickly translates books, menus, and other materials needed for daily living.
“It’s like reading with the tip of your finger,” said Pattie Maes, an MIT professor who founded and led the research group developing the model. “It’s more flexible and immediate than any current solution,” she added.
Developers faced unusual challenges in making the device. It uses vibration (震动) motors to warn users when they wander off the line of text, and audio signals to indicate the start and finish of the reading material. To accomplish this, developers spent three years coding software and experimenting with various designs. They also received feedback from people who are visually impaired.
Much work remains before the FingerReader is ready for the market. It needs adjustments to work on cell phones. The device can read papers, books, and computer screens, but it struggles with touch screens — touching the screen with the fingertip shifts the text and produces unintended results.
Jerry Berrier, aged 62, was born blind. He is attracted to the portability (便携) of the FingerReader. He sees promise in its offer of real-time use.
“When I go to the doctor’s office, there may be forms that I read before I sign them,” Berrier said. “Everywhere we go, for folks who are sighted, there are things that inform us about the products we interact with. My Intelligent Robot for the Elderly
Many elderly people live alone and lack daily care and company, so I designed this intelligent robot to solve their troubles.
